Generalizability Theory Applied to Daily Relationship Quality: Substantive and Statistical Directions.

Measuring daily romantic relationship quality is important for understanding conflict, support, and satisfaction processes in near real-time. Although there now exists a great deal of research on determinants and outcomes of daily relationship quality, these investigations often rely on several untested assumptions regarding sources of, and consistency in, variability. In this study, we tested the variance components for daily relationship quality, how consistent these measurements are, and whether they are impacted by individual differences in attachment security. Six daily, nonexperimental s

Coach-Perpetrated Interpersonal Violence: Witnessing, Perceived Harmfulness and the Role of Coaching Motivational Climate.

Coach-perpetrated interpersonal violence can pose significant risks to athletes' development as well as psychological, physical and social well-being worldwide. This study examined the perceived harmfulness of witnessed coach-perpetrated interpersonal violence behaviours in the North Mediterranean region, alongside any associations with coaching climates (empowering and disempowering). Data were collected from 494 active coaches across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain and Portugal through an online questionnaire where they reported witnessing and perceived harm of psychological, physical, i

Hormonal contraceptive use is associated with love intensity across 51 countries.

Hormonal contraception has revolutionized women's reproductive control, yet its effects on romantic relationships are underexplored. We tested the Congruency Hypothesis, which predicts that changes in hormonal contraceptive (HC) use after forming a romantic relationship can reduce relationship quality. Using semi-representative samples from 51 countries (n = 10,482), we analyzed partnered women aged 45 or younger (n = 2,224) who reported HC use both when they met their partner and at the time of the study, and who rated their relationship satisfaction and intensity of the three components of l

Cortical and Subcortical Alpha-Band Electroencephalographic (EEG) Network Involved in the Interpersonal Space Sensitivity.

The presence of another human in our immediate or distant environment is a crucial factor for survival and social behavior. Our actions vary depending on the other person's relative proximity, involving integration of brain functions subserved by neural oscillations, to generate the most appropriate behavior. This study highlights the alpha EEG role and its neural generators in interpersonal space sensitivity (IPSS). To investigate this, participants stood face-to-face, gazing into each other's eyes, while wearing a mask preventing them from staring at each other. An auditory order instructed

Neural Correlates of Visuomotor Co-regulation in Social Synchronization.

During social activities, people coordinate their movements by exchanging visuomotor information. Interpersonal coordination arises from two complementary processes, involving either voluntary (planned) or spontaneous (emergent) synchronization, whose neurofunctional underpinnings are currently unknown. We investigated the brain correlates of these two synchronization processes during an fMRI finger-tapping task. Thirty participants (17 females, 13 males) were scanned while reproducing a target tempo either synchronizing with (Joint Action, JA) or resisting (Non-interactive, NI) the partner's

Evolving together: Dynamic transactions of antagonistic and self-centered traits with couple relationships.

The reciprocal influence between personality and relationship experiences has been of considerable interest, but there is little research on the extent to which changes in relationship quality are shaped by changes in antagonistic or self-centered personality traits or, conversely, how changes in relationship quality impact these traits. In the present study, we examined how Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism are linked to key aspects of romantic relationships, including relationship satisfaction, commitment, reciprocity orientation, and verbal aggression. We used data from the Germ

Teacher-student relationship moderates the association between tuberculosis close-contact exposure and somatic symptoms among adolescents in Hangzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Although tuberculosis (TB) control programs have primarily focused on infection prevention, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes, increasing attention has been directed toward the psychosocial consequences of TB-related experiences among affected populations. In school settings, adolescents identified as TB close contacts may experience concerns about infection risk, repeated health monitoring, activity restrictions, and disease-related stigma, which may represent important psychosocial stressors beyond the biological risk of infection. However, evidence regarding whether TB close-con

A qualitative exploration of the psychosocial factors of sexual satisfaction in Iranian newlyweds.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial factors related to sexuality, such as gender expectations and interpersonal dynamics, influence sexual satisfaction, and identifying these factors is beneficial for developing educational programs for newly married couples. However, evidence regarding these psychosocial factors in the Iranian sociocultural context is limited. Therefore, the present study was conducted to identify the psychosocial factors influencing sexual satisfaction among newly married couples. METHOD: This study employed a qualitative content analysis approach. It involved 31 heterosexual newly ma

Partners' Perspectives on the Impact of Cancer on Romantic Relationships and Marriage in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the impact of cancer on romantic relationships and marriage from the perspective of partners of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors. Methods: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 partners, of any gender and cancer type, who entered into a relationship or decided to marry after the AYA's cancer diagnosis. Results: Three key themes emerged regarding the impact of cancer on romantic relationships and marriage: no change or impact, positive impact, and anxiety. Negative impacts were rarely reported, although some participants suggested

Looking Through a Cultural Perspective: Autistic Young Adults' Experiences and Expectations in Sexuality and Relationship Education in the U.S.

Although students with diverse cultural backgrounds need sexuality and relationship education (SRE), the perspectives of those from different cultural groups with neurodevelopmental conditions are often under-investigated. The autistic population, in particular, may have communication and sensory preferences that can be unsupported by the current SRE for non-autistic people, and the cultural relatedness of the SRE they received are often unrecognized. To better understand autistic individuals' insights, nine autistic young adults from different cultural groups between 20 and 35 years old (four

Psychological Vulnerability and Hope as Serial Mediators in the Association between Psychological Maltreatment and Romantic Relationship Satisfaction.

This study aims to examine the serial mediating roles of psychological vulnerability and hope in explaining the impact of childhood psychological maltreatment on romantic relationship satisfaction in adulthood. The research was conducted with the participation of 401 young adults, and data were collected through self-report instruments. The proposed theoretical model was tested using structural equation modeling. The findings indicate that psychological maltreatment negatively affects romantic relationship satisfaction both directly and indirectly through psychological vulnerability and hope.

What We Bring to the Table: An Examination of the Developing Relationship Between Youth Mentees and Their College Mentors.

Mentoring programs are a popular approach for supporting youth through relationships with adult mentors, but few mentoring studies have included the mentor perspective. The present study comprised 80 undergraduate mentors (M age = 19.83, 52.5% White, 76.3% female) and elementary-aged mentees (M age = 10.61, 91.3% Black, 53.8% female). Mentee and mentor perceptions of the mentoring relationship and their other adult social supports were assessed over an academic year, in addition to mentor internalizing problems. It was hypothesized that mentor and mentee mentoring relationship quality would bo

The Differential Impact of Retirement on Contact Frequency With Family, Friends, Neighbors, and Coworkers.

OBJECTIVES: Most studies on retirement and social network dynamics focus on the closer social network, leaving the role of more peripheral contacts largely overlooked. This article studies how retirement affects contact frequency with a wider range of social ties. We formulate and test differential hypotheses for each category of ties, and additionally examine gender and partner status differences. METHODS: We analyze 3 waves of panel data of the NIDI Pension Panel Study, collected in the Netherlands between 2015 and 2023 (n = 5,238). We use 2-way fixed-effects regression models to study with

The association between self-oriented perfectionism and suicidal ideation in adolescents: The buffering role of social connectedness.

This study examined and compared the moderating roles of connectedness to parents, peers, friends, and school in the association between self-oriented perfectionism and suicidal ideation among adolescents in a non-clinical, community sample. Data on suicidal ideation, self-oriented perfectionism, and connectedness in these four domains were collected using self-report instruments from adolescents with no psychiatric history. The results showed that although connectedness to parents, friends, peers, and school was generally associated with lower suicidal ideation, it was only connectedness to f

Does My Friend Like My Romantic Partner? Links Among Relationship Work With Partners and Friends and Physiological Implications.

Informed by the theoretical foundation of social exchange theory and polyvagal theory, we examined romantic, social, and psychophysiological functioning among a sample of 284 heterosexual, emerging adult romantic partners and their friends. Actor-partner interdependence model results revealed that both women and men reported greater romantic adjustment when also speaking frequently with their partner about romantic challenges. Additionally, men were found to have more favorable psychophysiological functioning, as captured by heart rate variability (HRV) during conversations with their partner,

Cooperation is not rewarded by friendship, but generous and selfish students repel each other in social networks.

Humans cooperate across various contexts, despite the individual costs involved. Cooperation and prosocial behavior may persist because these costs are offset by reputation and other social benefits. Specifically, cooperators and prosocial individuals may receive more friendship nominations and be less likely to face exclusion or avoidance. We test whether such beneficial network dynamics are present in a unique dataset of twenty primary school classes in northern Italy. Cooperation and social preferences of 420 students in grades 4 and 5 were measured with incentivized social dilemma games, a

Friendship relationships, psychological well-being, and social problem solving in primary school students.

During the primary school years, friendships between children gradually begin to strengthen. During this process, establishing and maintaining friendships are closely related to children's psychological well-being (PWB). However, the development of this relationship can be better understood through the mediating role of social problem-solving (SPS) skills. Within the scope of the study, the nature of friendship and the meaning children attribute to it, as well as the processes of defining problems in social life, including problem-solving, producing solutions, and evaluating them, were examine

The Association Between Close Relationships and Happiness Among Older Adults.

Close relationships have long been recognized as crucial in shaping older adults' happiness and well-being. This study investigated the longitudinal association between close relationships (including those with a spouse, children, and friends) and happiness among older adults using random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs), explicitly capturing changes over time. We pooled waves 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15 from the RAND file of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Our analytic sample included 15,758 individuals aged 50 years and older (Mean age = 67.14). We ran three RI-CLPMs to exam

Linking Friendship Quality Trajectories and Fluctuations to Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: A Four-wave Longitudinal Study.

Adolescence is a period marked by significant changes in friendships; however, while existing research has focused on developmental trajectories of friendship quality, relatively less attention has been paid to fluctuations in friendship quality and their impact on psychological well-being. The present study sought to address this gap by examining whether and how friendship quality trajectories and fluctuations distinctly affect adolescent depressive symptoms. A sample of 1083 seventh-grade Chinese students (39.1% girls; baseline Mage = 12.91 years, SD = 0.40) from three public junior high sch

"Everyone Has a Plan 'til You Get Punched in the Mouth": Discussing the Topic of Dating in Stuttering Therapy.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists typically focus more on social communication as it applies to academics, vocation, and specific social life situations and less on romantic aspects of the lives of people who stutter (PWS). However, when working with PWS, addressing intimate social communication interactions is important due to the possible severe impact of negative social behaviors, particularly avoidance behaviors, on the client's quality of life. This article highlights dating as a critical aspect of the personal and social lives of PWS. METHOD: An overview of the literature on dating
