A severe form of toxemia of pregnancy with microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets has been called the HELLP syndrome. A patient with the HELLP syndrome developed a severe, reversible encephalopathy. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed abnormalities consistent with edema limited to the posterior circulation territory. The location of the lesions and their occurrence in the HELLP syndrome support suggestions that the vulnerability of posterior structures in eclamptic encephalopathy is due to a vascular susceptibility of the poster

The use of human fetal tissue from elective abortions for cell transplantation therapies has been the subject of considerable controversy. Because of concerns regarding the use of tissue from elective abortions, tissue from spontaneous abortions has been suggested as an alternate donor source. In the present study we have evaluated human fetal tissue from spontaneous abortions to assess its viability, growth potential, and functional expression. Viable cells (Grade I) from a donor (7 wk postconception) were transplanted as a suspension into the striatum of rats with unilateral 6-OHDA lesions o

We analyzed the distribution of OTX2 during mouse development. OTX2 is a homeoprotein encoded by Otx2, a vertebrate homeobox gene expressed in the developing brain and anterior head regions. The protein is already detectable in pre-streak embryos, in nuclei of embryonic ectoderm or epiblast and primitive endoderm or hypoblast. Its distribution is uniform along the entire epiblast, while showing an antero-posterior gradient along the hypoblast at the time when primitive streak first forms. Between embryonic day 7 (E7) and E7.5 there is a progressive confinement of the protein to the anterior ec

Three seronegative sheep persistently infected with Border disease virus and six seropositive, non-viraemic sheep were examined for the cellular distribution of the agent. These animals originated from a closed flock which had been kept in an isolation facility for 5 years. They were killed and immediately necropsied. There were no gross abnormalities other than reduced body weight of the persistently infected sheep. Two samples of each major organ were collected. The first sample was fixed by immersion in formalin and processed for histological examination, which showed no lesions unequivocal

This investigation was carried out to determine the early structural abnormalities of the cephalic region in a genetic mutant of the rat characterized by prenatal aqueductal stenosis and hydrocephalus. The appearance of hydrocephalic and control embryos was examined on days 13-15 of gestation, and the structure and organization of the neuroepithelium and basal lamina were studied using scanning electron microscopy. In addition to some overall developmental delay, hydrocephalic embryos were characterized by abnormalities of forebrain and midbrain development, and eye and external ear anomalies.

AIM: Recent studies have implicated autophagy in both weight regulation and depression. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between stress-induced weight loss and autophagy-related gene expression in a mouse model of depression.
METHOD: Male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to a chronic immobilization stress (CIS) protocol for 14 days to induce depressive-like behavior. Body weight was measured before and after the CIS, and depressive-like behavior was assessed using the tail suspension test (TST). The expression levels of autophagy-related genes (Atg5, Atg7, Atg12, Becn1, Mmp9, Fkbp5

A 42-year-old Algerian man presented for binocular oblique diplopia, hypersomnolence with drop attacks, bilateral hearing loss, and thoracic pain. He had a right thalamomesencephalic hemorrhage due to an underlying cavernous malformation treated with subtotal surgical resection. On neuro-ophthalmic examination, the patient had a left relative afferent pupillary defect and a right oculosympathetic efferent pupillary defect (i.e., Horner syndrome) in addition to other thalamomesencephalic eye and neurologic signs (right fourth nerve palsy, hearing loss, hemiparesis, and thalamic pain). Mutations in HPRT1, a gene encoding a rate-limiting enzyme for purine salvage, cause Lesch-Nyhan disease which is characterized by self-injury and motor impairments. We leveraged stem cell and genetic engineering technologies to model the disease in isogenic and patient-derived forebrain and midbrain cell types. Dopaminergic progenitor cells deficient in HPRT showed decreased intensity of all developmental cell-fate markers measured. Metabolic analyses revealed significant loss of all purine derivatives, except hypoxanthine, and impaired glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation. real-time gluc

INTRODUCTION: Several previous studies examined different brainstem-derived MR planimetric measures with regards to their diagnostic accuracy in separating patients with neurodegenerative parkinsonian disorders and reported conflicting results. The current study aimed to compare their performance in a well-characterized sample of patients with neurodegenerative parkinsonian disorders.
METHODS: MR planimetric measurements were assessed in a large retrospective cohort of 55 progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 194 Parkinson's disease (PD) and 63 multiple system atrophy (MSA) patients. This coh

Previous research has shown that nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitors prevent rodents' sensorimotor gating impairments induced by dopamine releasing drugs, such as amphetamine (Amph) and methylphenidate. The mechanisms of this effect have not been entirely understood. In the present work, we investigated some possible mechanisms by which the NO donor, NOC-12 (3-ethyl-3-(ethylaminoethyl)-1-hydroxy-2-oxo-1-triazene), influence spontaneous and Amph-induced dopamine release, using rat mesencephalic primary cultured neurons preparations. Our results showed that NOC-12 increased dopamine release in

BACKGROUND: Adolescent social stress is associated with increased incidence of mental illnesses in adulthood that are characterized by deficits in cognitive focus and flexibility. Such enhanced vulnerability may be due to psychosocial stress-induced disruption of the developing mesocortical dopamine system, which plays a fundamental role in facilitating complex cognitive processes such as spatial working memory. Adolescent rats exposed to repeated social defeat as a model of social stress develop dopaminergic hypofunction in the medial prefrontal cortex as adults. To evaluate a direct link bet

PURPOSE: In this study, we examine whether an excitatory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocol called intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) applied to the affected left hemisphere leads to changes in white matter fractional anisotropy (FA).
METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were collected in 8 aphasic stroke patients before and after 10 daily iTBS treatments. Alignment of structural and DTI data and derivation of diffusion index maps were performed using Analysis of Functional NeuroImages software followed by Tract-Based Spatial Statistics using FMRIB S

INTRODUCTION: Dorsal midbrain syndrome (DMS) is characterized by upgaze paralysis, convergence-retraction nystagmus, and eyelid retraction. Impaired downgaze and pupillary light-near dissociation may co-exist, while less common features including exotropia and convergence paralysis have also been described. However, loss of motor fusion is not a well recognised finding in DMS.
PURPOSE: To describe DMS associated with loss of motor fusion.
METHODS: Retrospective case series.
RESULTS: Five patients (age 21-80 years) presented with features of DMS due to severe head injury (n=1), brainstem str

OBJECTIVE: X linked spinobulbar muscular atrophy (Kennedy disease (KD)), which is clinically characterised mainly by neuromuscular and endocrine symptoms, has to be considered as a multisystem disorder. Based on clinical evidence of central nervous system involvement, potential KD associated cerebral volume alterations were analysed in vivo.
METHODS: Whole brain based analysis of optimised voxel based morphometry (VBM) was applied to three dimensional MRI data from 18 genetically confirmed KD patients and compared with age matched controls.
RESULTS: Subtle decreases in grey matter volume, ma

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is found in a wide range of vertebrate tissues, including the nervous system. In general, GnRH has two functions: endocrine, acting as a releasing hormone; and neuromodulatory, affecting neural activity in the peripheral and central nervous system. The best understood population of GnRH cells is that of the hypothalamus, which is essential for reproduction. Less well understood are the populations of GnRH cells found in the terminal nerve and midbrain, which appear to be neuromodulatory in function. The GnRH-containing cells of the midbrain are proposed to

BACKGROUND: The long-term neuromotor outcome in paediatric strokes ranges from normal to varying degrees of hemiplegia. We evaluated the indices of diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI), fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity to determine if these indices can identify and quantify the presence of Wallerian degeneration in paediatric patients with chronic middle cerebral artery infarction, and to determine if these quantitative parameters correlate with the neuromotor outcome.
METHODS: Eleven children (mean age 8.1 years) with evidence of unilateral middle cerebral artery strok
