Correlation between calcium levels and coronary microvascular disease in high-altitude environments: nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Coronary microvascular disease (CMVD) is an emerging concern under high-altitude hypoxia, but data on modifiable correlates are scarce. Serum calcium regulates vascular tone and coagulation, making it a plausible candidate marker. However, its association with CMVD at high altitude has not been systematically examined. METHODS: This nested case-control study enrolled 1,175 participants undergoing high-altitude training at 3,000-3,500 m. Participants were classified into CMVD and non-CMVD groups based on electrocardiogram (ECG) screening and coronary flow reserve (CFR ≤ 2.3) confir

Dynamic fluid flow and endothelial cross talk regulate mesangial homeostasis in a simplified 3-D coculture model.

Mesangial hypercellularity and excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation are defining lesions of mesangial proliferative glomerular diseases and drivers of progressive glomerulosclerosis and renal dysfunction. How mesangial cells (MCs) remain quiescent within the mechanically dynamic glomerular microenvironment, and why this control fails in disease, remain incompletely understood, in part because few in vitro systems combine three-dimensional (3-D) architecture, heterotypic cell interactions, and defined mechanical loading. We therefore developed a simplified three-dimensional (3-D) c

Quantitative Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Indicators of Neurovascular Dysfunction in Alzheimer Disease.

IMPORTANCE: Alzheimer disease (AD) affects millions globally, but current diagnostic approaches typically can be costly and invasive. Accessible, noninvasive screening tools for early detection of cognitive impairment are needed. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA)-based biomarkers of the retina, choroid, and choriocapillaris differ across cognitive states and whether these biomarkers might discriminate among normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD dementia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 10

Improving cardiorespiratory fitness and quality of life among heart failure patients: A comparative study of circuit resistance training and myofascial release techniques.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) imposes limitations due to severe dyspnea and fatigue, which are often linked to diminished exercise tolerance, potentially influenced by compromised microvascular density, blood flow, and muscle strength. Myofascial release techniques (MRT) have demonstrated the capacity to enhance blood flow by reducing fascial tension. PURPOSE: To assess the impact of incorporating MRT into Circuit Resistance Training (CRT) in comparison to an unsupervised home-based rehabilitation (RUHB) program on exercise tolerance (ET), muscle strength (MS), quality of life (QoL), and dep…

Optical coherence tomography angiography of peripapillary vessel density in non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and demyelinating optic neuritis.

BACKGROUND: In cases of optic disc edema or a pale optic disc, distinguishing an episode of optic neuritis (ON) from that of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) during a clinical examination is challenging. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) can reveal differences in peripapillary vascular network structures and provide biomarkers for differential diagnosis. METHODS: A total of 23 eyes with NAION, 22 eyes with demyelinating ON (DON), and 27 eyes from healthy participants were imaged using OCTA to observe the radial peripapillary capillaries (RPCs). Optical co

Association of covert brain infarcts and white matter hyperintensities with risk of hip fracture in older adults: the Cardiovascular Health Study.

UNLABELLED: Covert brain infarcts and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), incidental markers of brain microvascular disease commonly seen on brain MRIs in older adults, have been associated with falls and lower bone mineral density. We found covert infarcts and WMHs may also be associated with an increased risk of future hip fracture. INTRODUCTION: To determine whether covert infarcts and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are associated with increased risk of incident hip fracture. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 3373 community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 65 years enrolled in the Cardiovasc

Bone Microarchitecture and Strength in Long-Standing Type 1 Diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) is associated with an increased fracture risk, specifically at nonvertebral sites. The influence of glycemic control and microvascular disease on skeletal health in long-standing T1DM remains largely unknown. We aimed to assess areal (aBMD) and volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), bone microarchitecture, bone turnover, and estimated bone strength in patients with long-standing T1DM, defined as disease duration ≥25 years. We recruited 59 patients with T1DM (disease duration 37.7 ± 9.0 years; age 59.9 ± 9.9 years.; body mass index [BMI] 25.5 ± 3.7 kg/m2 ; 5-year median

Two weeks of remote ischaemic preconditioning alters sympathovagal balance in healthy humans.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Delayed cardiovascular responses occur following a single bout of remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC). Is heart rate variability (HRV), a surrogate marker of cardiac vagal control, able to detect a delayed effect after a single bout of RIPC? Do repeated bouts of RIPC further alter HRV? What is the main finding and its importance? Indices of HRV indicated a shift in sympathovagal balance toward greater parasympathetic activity following 2 weeks of RIPC but not after a single bout of RIPC. Thus, repeated bouts of RIPC were necessary t

Nutritional Status and Bone Microarchitecture in a Cohort of Systemic Sclerosis Patients.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease characterized by initial microvascular damage, immune system activation and progressive fibrosis with insufficiency of internal organs. Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement is characterized by atrophy of the smooth muscle and small bowel hypomotility, mainly resulting from an autonomic nerve dysfunction. These modifications significantly affect gut transit and nutrient absorption, thus leading to malnutrition deficit induced by malabsorption. Nutritional deficit induced by malabsorption might also lead to bone alterations. This study aims to

Super-resolution ultrasound imaging reveals temporal cerebrovascular changes with disease progression in female 5×FAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease: correlation with pathological impairments.

BACKGROUND: Vascular dysfunction is closely associated with the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A critical research gap exists that no studies have explored the in vivo temporal changes of cerebrovascular alterations with AD progression in mouse models, encompassing both structure and flow dynamics at micron-scale resolution across the early, middle, and late stages of the disease. METHODS: In this study, ultrasound localisation microscopy (ULM) was applied to image the cerebrovascular alterations of the transgenic female 5×FAD mouse model across different stages of disease progressi
