OBJECTIVE: Rats with ventromedial hypothalamic lesion (VMH) are massively obese with endogenous hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, low sympathetic activity, and high parasympathetic activity, which are likely to induce hypertension. The goal was to follow in this model the long-term hemodynamic changes and to investigate the role of autonomic nervous system and insulin resistance in these changes.
RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Heart rate and blood pressure were monitored for 12 weeks after operation using a telemetric system in VMH and sham rats. Plasma catecholamines and heart beta-adr

BACKGROUND: Atrial tachyarrhythmia is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with univentricular physiology undergoing the Fontan operation. We examined cardiac autonomic nervous activity, a predictor of arrhythmia and sudden death in other cardiovascular disease, in patients late after the Fontan operation, employing heart rate variability (HRV) and baroreflex sensitivity.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We measured HRV and baroreflex sensitivity in 22 consecutive patients (8 male, age 26+/-9 years) who had undergone the Fontan operation 13+/-6 years previously, and 22 age- and sex-match

During parturition and the immediate post-partum period there are two opposite, yet interdependent and intertwined systems that are highly active and play a role in determining lifelong health and behaviour in both the mother and her infant: the stress and the anti-stress (oxytocin) system. Before attempting to understand how the environment around birth determines long-term health trajectories, it is essential to understand how these two systems operate and how they interact. Here, we discuss together the hormonal and neuronal arms of both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the

INTRODUCTION: The phenomenon known as periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) has been linked to a change in autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and its effect on circulatory regulation. Autonomic dysfunction or dysregulation in patients with PLMS has been described in some domains; however, any relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and PLMS has not been clearly established. HRV analysis is a recognised, non-invasive research method that describes the influence of the ANS on heart rate (HR). The aim of our study was to further investigate the dysregulation of autonomic HR contr

Detrusor instability, or urinary incontinence, is common in elderly patients, particularly elderly women. The clinical symptoms of overactive, or unstable, urinary bladder include urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency. Mixed urinary incontinence, which comprises urge urinary incontinence and stress incontinence, is manifested by increased intraabdominal pressure on coughing or sneezing. The detrusor muscle of the bladder is under the control of the parasympathetic, or muscarinic, nervous system. The drug of choice in this condition is oxybutynin chloride, which has the ability to b

BACKGROUND: Cycling consists of alternating periods of reduced and normal fetal heart variability, reflecting changes in fetal behavioral states. Occurrence of active and quiet sleep cycles is considered to be a hallmark of fetal autonomic nervous system integrity, demonstrating healthy interaction between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. Cycling is an overlooked feature in most international cardiotocography (CTG) guidelines. The authors tested the hypothesis that fetuses showing no cycling in the intrapartum period have poorer outcomes.
AIM: To investigate whether the ab

CalDAG-GEFI (CDGI) is a protein highly enriched in the striatum, particularly in the principal spiny projection neurons (SPNs). CDGI is strongly down-regulated in two hyperkinetic conditions related to striatal dysfunction: Huntington's disease and levodopa-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease. We demonstrate that genetic deletion of CDGI in mice disrupts dendritic, but not somatic, M1 muscarinic receptors (M1Rs) signaling in indirect pathway SPNs. Loss of CDGI reduced temporal integration of excitatory postsynaptic potentials at dendritic glutamatergic synapses and impaired the induction

The cranial autonomic symptoms (CAS) in patients with cluster headache (CH) are considered to occur as a result of intense ophthalmic division pain. Five CH patients underwent transection of the trigeminal nerve root but continued to experience periodic CAS without pain, whereas another five patients continued to experience typical cluster headaches. These findings confirm that CH is generated by a central pacemaker and the pain may be expressed without activation of the peripheral trigeminovascular network.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether heart function in childhood is affected by exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) from seafood.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study of a Faroese birth cohort (N=1022). Examinations at ages 7 and 14 years included blood pressure, heart rate variability (HRV) and its frequency components of autonomic origin, and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). Mercury concentrations were determined in cord blood and in the child's hair.
RESULTS: Both low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) activities decreased by about 25% from 7 to 14 years; they correlated well with the

Mash1, a mammalian homologue of the Drosophila proneural genes of the achaete-scute complex, is transiently expressed throughout the developing peripheral autonomic nervous system and in subsets of cells in the neural tube. In the mouse, targeted mutation of Mash1 has revealed a role in the development of parts of the autonomic nervous system and of olfactory neurons, but no discernible phenotype in the brain has been reported. Here, we show that the adrenergic and noradrenergic centres of the brain are missing in Mash1 mutant embryos, whereas most other brainstem nuclei are preserved. Indeed,

INTRODUCTION: Gastric function is regulated by the gut-brain axis, which integrates vagal and enteric nervous system (ENS) pathways. The parasympathetic circuit within the vagal pathway promotes digestion by stimulating peristaltic activity and relaxing the pyloric sphincter (PS) through motor and sensory neurons. In contrast, the sympathetic pathway inhibits digestion by suppressing peristalsis and constricting the PS, highlighting the complex neural coordination involved in gastric regulation.
METHODS: We introduce a novel mathematical model of the gut-brain axis using a computationally eff

INTRODUCTION: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) describes meridians as channels through which vital energy (Qi) flows, with disturbances in this flow associated with disease. Contemporary research has demonstrated that classical meridian points possess distinctive electrical properties that vary with autonomic and metabolic states. This study investigated the effects of different yogic practices, meditation, and exercise on meridian energy measured through electrical conductance at classical acupuncture points.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy adults participated in various intervention groups

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is a prodromal state of α-synucleinopathies, presenting years before overt neurodegenerative disorders. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) involvement, particularly cardiovascular autonomic failure, may indicate progression. However, its role as a (multidimensional) marker for disease progression and phenoconversion remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether cardiovascular autonomic failure and symptoms of autonomic dysfunction serve as multidimensional markers in patients with iRBD.
METHODS: We conducted a prosp

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation is prevalent in high-pressure environments and among shift workers, and may contribute to autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation, contributing to cardiovascular diseases, mood disorders, and cognitive impairment. Heart rate variability (HRV), an important indicator of ANS function, reflects fluctuations in sympathetic and parasympathetic activity and is commonly used to assess the autonomic effects of sleep deprivation. However, existing studies exhibit considerable heterogeneity due to inconsistencies in HRV measurement methods, variations in deprivation du

Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a major obstetric complication that leads to severe maternal and fetal morbidity. Early detection of preeclampsia can reduce the severity of complications and improve clinical outcomes. It is believed that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is involved in the pathogenesis of PE. We aimed to review the current literature on the prevalence and nature of ANS dysfunction in women with PE and the possible prognostic value of ANS testing in the early detection of PE. Methods: Literature search was performed using Medline (1966-2018), EMBase (1947-2018), Google Schola
