Escalation of Gambling Associated With Aripiprazole: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Impulse-control problems such as gambling, increased spending, hypersexuality, and compulsive eating are thought to be influenced by temperamental, genetic, and physiological risk factors. In addition, dopamine receptor agonists have been implicated in some cases. It is postulated that aripiprazole may cause impulse-control problems because it can produce a hyperdopaminergic state in the mesolimbic pathway (reward system) through its predominant action on dopamine D3 receptors. We present the case of a patient with bipolar disorder and previous gambling behavior, in whom the gambling behavior

Prenatal methylmercury, postnatal lead exposure, and evidence of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder among Inuit children in Arctic Québec.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been associated with impaired performance on attention tasks in previous studies, but the extent to which these cognitive deficits translate into behavioral problems in the classroom and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains unknown. By contrast, lead (Pb) exposure in childhood has been associated with ADHD and disruptive behaviors in several studies. OBJECTIVES: In this study we examined the relation of developmental exposure to MeHg, PCBs, and Pb to behavioral problems at school

Longitudinal associations between youth prosocial behavior and dimensions of psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that prosocial behavior, having high empathy and engaging in behaviors intended to benefit others, may predict mental health or vice versa; however, these findings have been mixed. The purpose of the current study was to examine the bidirectional relationships between prosocial behavior and dimensions of psychopathology in children. METHODS: The relationships between prosocial behavior and four dimensions of psychopathology (general psychopathology, internalizing symptoms, conduct problems, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms) were examined longit

HIV sexual risk behavior among low-income women experiencing intimate partner violence: the role of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder resulting from intimate partner violence (IPV-related PTSD), drug problems, and alcohol problems were tested as correlates of women's sexual risk behavior. Participants were 136 low-income women experiencing physical violence by a male partner during the past 6 months. Sexual risk behavior was assessed by whether women had unprotected sex with a risky primary partner (i.e., HIV-positive, injection drug user, and/or nonmonogamous), unprotected sex with a risky nonprimary partner (i.e. HIV-positive or unknown status), or traded sex during the past 6 months. Nearly o

Clinical and genetic characterization of individuals with predicted deleterious PHIP variants.

Heterozygous deleterious variants in PHIP have been associated with behavioral problems, intellectual disability/developmental delay, obesity/overweight, and dysmorphic features (BIDOD syndrome). We report an additional 10 individuals with pleckstrin homology domain-interacting protein (PHIP)-predicted deleterious variants (four frameshift, three missense, two nonsense, and one splice site; six of which are confirmed de novo). The mutation spectrum is diverse, and there is no clustering of mutations across the protein. The clinical phenotype of these individuals is consistent with previous rep

Parent perceptions of the psychological functioning of their children diagnosed with pediatric motility disorders and that of family members.

The aim of our study was to characterize the parental perceptions of the behavioral and emotional functioning of their children and families coping with gastrointestinal motility disorders. The American Pseudo-obstruction and Hirschsprung's disease Society sponsored an educational meeting for parents of children afflicted with a variety of pediatric gastrointestinal motility disorders. During the conference, parents completed a questionnaire pertaining to the behavioral and emotional functioning of the afflicted child and other family members. Parents perceived that the child's illness was mor

Developmental-behavioral profiles in children with autism spectrum disorder and co-occurring gastrointestinal symptoms.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are frequently reported in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We evaluated the frequency and sever … ce GI symptoms than typically developing peers. Increased GI symptoms are associated with increased problem behaviors such as sleep problems, self-injury, and body aches. Since GI symptoms are often treatable, it is important to recognize them as soon as possible. Both clinicians and parents should become more aware of the high occurrence of GI problems in autisti …

Parent-Reported Problematic Sleep Behaviors in Children with Comorbid Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are frequent and well documented in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and children with internalizing problems, however limited work has examined sleep problems in children presenting with comorbid ASD/ADHD. In healthy children, sleep problems negatively impact social, emotional, and academic functioning. The current study sought to examine diagnostic severity as predictors of sleep problems in children with comorbid ASD/ADHD. Additionally, the association between sleep and "real-life" functio

Executive Functioning as a Pathway Between Social Skills and Psychopathology: The Moderating Role of Autism Diagnosis.

Internalizing and externalizing problems are highly prevalent among children and adolescents, with higher rates observed particularly among those with neurodevelopmental disorders. Previous studies have identified deficits in social competence and executive functioning (EF) as predictive factors of internalizing and externalizing problems, and some studies have indicated that EF mediates this association in autistic individuals. However, the role of EF and social competence across autistic and typically developing (TD) individuals remains underexplored in relation to internalizing and external

Clinical practice: sleep problems during infancy.

Sleep problems are very prevalent during infancy. The most common problems are those related to night wakings and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Most common night waking problems do not have identified physiologic etiology. Their causes appear to be behavioral or developmental by nature, and they usually respond well to behavioral interventions. SDB may result from a variety of anatomic and neurologic factors and is associated with a variety of medical and developmental disorders. Because of the high prevalence of sleep problems during infancy, their persistence, their potential adverse dev

Emotional and behavioral functioning after conformal radiation therapy for pediatric ependymoma.

PURPOSE: The standard of care for pediatric patients with ependymoma involves postoperative radiation therapy. Prior research suggests that conformal radiation therapy (CRT) is associated with relative sparing of cognitive and academic functioning, but little is known about the effect of CRT on emotional and behavioral functioning. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 113 patients with pediatric ependymoma underwent CRT using photons as part of their enrollment on an institutional trial. Patients completed annual evaluations of neurocognitive functioning during the first 5 years after CRT. Emoti

Positive parenting for positive parents: HIV/AIDS, poverty, caregiver depression, child behavior, and parenting in South Africa.

Families affected by HIV/AIDS in the developing world experience higher risks of psychosocial problems than nonaffected families. Positive parenting behavior may buffer against the negative impact of child AIDS-orphanhood and caregiver AIDS-sickness on child well-being. Although there is substantial literature regarding the predictors of parenting behavior in Western populations, there is insufficient evidence on HIV/AIDS as a risk factor for poor parenting in low- and middle-income countries. This paper examines the relationship between HIV/AIDS and positive parenting by comparing HIV/AIDS-af

Sleep-disordered breathing and behavior in three risk groups: preliminary findings from parental reports.

Sleep-related breathing disorders may cause excessive daytime sleepiness, cognitive impairment, and behavior problems in children and adolescents. Adenotonsillar enlargement (AT) is known to be a significant risk factor for these disorders, which have also been reported in several patients with Down syndrome (DS). Children with attention deficit disorder/hyperactivity (ADD) show behavior problems that may be related to disturbed nocturnal sleep in some. To evaluate the relationships among these disorders and symptoms, parents of 29 school-aged children with AT, 70 with DS and 48 of their sibli

Prenatal urinary biomarkers of metal and metalloid exposure and child neurodevelopmental outcomes in Puerto Rico.

Exposure to toxic metals, and insufficient or excess levels of essential metals, particularly during sensitive stages of development, can pose health risks. Previous research reports that prenatal exposure to metal mixtures is associated with poorer cognitive and behavioral outcomes. However, little research has studied the impact of prenatal exposure to complex metal mixtures on child behavioral and emotional development specifically in Puerto Rico, a population with exposure and health disparities. This study aims to understand how prenatal exposure to 14 metals affects child neurodevelopmen

The relationship between substance use and sexual health among African-American female adolescents with a history of seeking mental health services.

BACKGROUND: This study examined relationships between substance use patterns and problems and sexual health outcomes among low-income, urban, African-American female adolescents with a history of seeking mental health services. METHODS: Participants were recruited from outpatient mental health clinics serving urban, primarily low-income youth and families in Chicago, Illinois, as part of a 2-year, longitudinal investigation of HIV risk behavior during which they completed interviews every 6 months (five time points). Girls who completed at least one follow-up interview were invited to partici

Social anxiety and risky Marijuana use: The role of underutilization of protective behavioral strategies.

Social anxiety is a common mental health problem that increases the risk of experiencing cannabis-related problems. In fact, social anxiety more than quadruples the risk of developing cannabis use disorder, yet it is inconsistently related to more cannabis use. Inconsistent findings may be due to lack of attention to protective behavioral strategies (PBS) among socially anxious cannabis users. PBS are cognitive-behavioral strategies to reduce cannabis use and related problems. Yet socially anxious persons may be less likely to use PBS for a variety of reasons (e.g., fear of negative evaluation

The relationship of loot box purchases to problem video gaming and problem gambling.

Loot boxes are virtual items in many video games that let players "gamble" on an item of chance. Loot boxes bring an element of gambling into video games, which might prime video game users to engage in online gambling activities. However, few studies have focused on this emerging issue. The present study investigated the relationships between loot box purchases and both problem video gaming and problem gambling severity. Cross-sectional, self-report data were collected from 618 adult video gamers (M = 27 years of age, SD = 8.9, 63.7% male) via an online survey. Nearly half of the sample (44.2

A randomized controlled trial of an intervention program to Brazilian mothers who use corporal punishment.

This study evaluated a positive parenting program to Brazilian mothers who used corporal punishment with their children. The intervention was conducted in four agencies serving vulnerable children, and at a home replica laboratory at the University. Mothers who admitted using corporal punishment were randomly assigned between experimental (n=20) and control group (n=20). The program consisted of 12 individual sessions using one unit from Projeto Parceria (Partnership Project), with specific guidelines and materials on positive parenting, followed by observational sessions of mother-child inter
