Olfactory cleft mucus galectin-10 predicts olfactory loss in chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophils have been reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of olfactory fluctuation in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Galectin-10 is more frequently associated with type 2 inflammation and potentially a sign of intense eosinophil activation. OBJECTIVE: To explore olfactory cleft mucus and olfactory mucosa galectin-10 level and its association with olfactory dysfunction (OD) in CRS. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 50 patients with CRS and 15 healthy controls. Olfactory cleft mucus and superior turbinate biopsy specimens were collected to analyze galectin-10 levels and qua

Channel-hopping during surface electrical neurostimulation elicits selective, comfortable, distally referred sensations.

Objective.Lack of sensation from a hand or prosthesis can result in substantial functional deficits. Surface electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerves is a promising non-invasive approach to restore lost sensory function. However, the utility of standard surface stimulation methods has been hampered by localized discomfort caused by unintended activation of afferents near the electrodes and limited ability to specifically target underlying neural tissue. The objectives of this work were to develop and evaluate a novel channel-hopping interleaved pulse scheduling (CHIPS) strategy for surf

Long-lasting olfactory dysfunction in COVID-19 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common symptom of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although many patients have been reported to regain olfactory function within the first month, long-term observation reports vary. Therefore, we aimed to assess the course of chemosensory function in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 within 3-15 months after the infection. METHODS: One hundred and two patients (71 females and 31 males; mean age 38.8 years) diagnosed with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and subjective OD participated in this single-center study 111-457 days after onset of OD. Patien

Self-assessment of refractive errors using a simple optical approach.

BACKGROUND: This explorative study investigated procedures for the self-assessment of spherocylindrical refractive errors. METHODS: Eighteen participants with a mean age of 34.0 ± 8.8 years were enrolled. Adjustable Alvarez lenses were mounted in a rotatable ring holder and two procedures were tested for the self-adjustment: (1) rotation of the lens in three meridians: 0°, 60° and 120° and (2) rotation of the optotypes in the same meridians. Starting from maximum positive power, the participants were required to decrease the power of the Alvarez lens until the optotypes (0.0 logMAR) appeared

The effects of the age of onset of strabismus on monocular and binocular visual function in genetically identical twins.

OBJECTIVE: Both genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of strabismus and subsequent ocular dominance and amblyopia. Our purpose was to compare the characteristics of sensory visual function in 2 adult monozygotic (genetically identical) twins who presented with esotropia at different ages. METHODS: Monocular and binocular visual function was measured in the twins. Contrast sensitivity was used to assess monocular function. Suppressive and stereoscopic measurements were undertaken to assess binocular function. All tests were run using a 2-alternative f

Correction to verdonck and tuerlinckx (2014).

Reports an error in "The Ising Decision Maker: A binary stochastic network for choice response time" by Stijn Verdonck and Francis Tuerlinckx (Psychological Review, 2014[Jul], Vol 121[3], 422-462). An inaccurate assumption in Appendix B (provided in the erratum) led to an oversimplified result in Equation 18 (the diffusion equations associated with the microscopically defined dynamics). The authors sincerely thank Rani Moran for making them aware of the problem. Only the expression of the diffusion coefficient D is incorrect, and should be changed, as indicated in the erratum. Both the cause o

Explaining the high voice superiority effect in polyphonic music: evidence from cortical evoked potentials and peripheral auditory models.

Natural auditory environments contain multiple simultaneously-sounding objects and the auditory system must parse the incoming complex sound wave they collectively create into parts that represent each of these individual objects. Music often similarly requires processing of more than one voice or stream at the same time, and behavioral studies demonstrate that human listeners show a systematic perceptual bias in processing the highest voice in multi-voiced music. Here, we review studies utilizing event-related brain potentials (ERPs), which support the notions that (1) separate memory traces

Perceptual adaptation to the correction of natural astigmatism.

BACKGROUND: The visual system adjusts to changes in the environment, as well as to changes within the observer, adapting continuously to maintain a match between visual coding and visual environment. We evaluated whether the perception of oriented blur is biased by the native astigmatism, and studied the time course of the after-effects following spectacle correction of astigmatism in habitually non-corrected astigmats. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We tested potential shifts of the perceptual judgments of blur orientation in 21 subjects. The psychophysical test consisted on a single interval orienta

Temporal and speech processing skills in normal hearing individuals exposed to occupational noise.

Prolonged exposure to high levels of occupational noise can cause damage to hair cells in the cochlea and result in permanent noise-induced cochlear hearing loss. Consequences of cochlear hearing loss on speech perception and psychophysical abilities have been well documented. Primary goal of this research was to explore temporal processing and speech perception Skills in individuals who are exposed to occupational noise of more than 80 dBA and not yet incurred clinically significant threshold shifts. Contribution of temporal processing skills to speech perception in adverse listening situatio

Situational versus dispositional measurement of catastrophizing: associations with pain responses in multiple samples.

UNLABELLED: Catastrophizing is widely recognized as an important risk factor for adverse pain-related outcomes. However, questions remain surrounding the details of its assessment. In particular, recent laboratory studies suggest that evaluation of "situational" catastrophizing (ie, catastrophizing measured during or directly after the administration of noxious stimulation) may provide information distinct from that obtained by standard, or "dispositional" measures, which assess individuals' recall of catastrophizing in daily life. However, comparatively little research has systematically inve

Somatosensory disturbance by methylmercury exposure.

Minamata disease is methylmercury poisoning from consuming fish and shellfish contaminated by industrial waste. The polluted seafood was widely consumed in the area around Minamata, but many individuals were never examined for or classified as having Minamata disease. Following the determination of the Supreme Court of Japan in October 2004 that the Japanese Government was responsible for spreading Minamata disease, over 13,000 residents came forward to be examined for Minamata disease. We studied 197 residents from the Minamata area who had a history of fish consumption during the polluted pe

Suppression tuning in noise-exposed rabbits.

Psychophysical, basilar-membrane (BM), and single nerve-fiber tuning curves, as well as suppression of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), all give rise to frequency tuning patterns with stereotypical features. Similarities and differences between the behaviors of these tuning functions, both in normal conditions and following various cochlear insults, have been documented. While neural tuning curves (NTCs) and BM tuning curves behave similarly both before and after cochlear insults known to disrupt frequency selectivity, DPOAE suppression tuning curves (STCs) do not necessarily

Human- and model-observer performance in ramp-spectrum noise: effects of regularization and object variability.

We consider detection of a nodule signal profile in noisy images meant to roughly simulate the statistical properties of tomographic image reconstructions in nuclear medicine. The images have two sources of variability arising from quantum noise from the imaging process and anatomical variability in the ensemble of objects being imaged. Both of these sources of variability are simulated by a stationary Gaussian random process. Sample images from this process are generated by filtering white-noise images. Human-observer performance in several signal-known-exactly detection tasks is evaluated th

Roles of capsaicin-insensitive nociceptors in cutaneous pain and secondary hyperalgesia.

Polymodal nociceptors respond to mechanical, thermal and chemical stimuli. Whereas sensitivities to heat and to the irritant substance capsaicin have recently been linked via the properties of the vanilloid receptor type 1 receptor ion channel, sensitivity to noxious mechanical stimuli such as the pinpricks used in clinical neurology seems to be unrelated. We investigated the peripheral neural basis of pinprick pain using quantitative psychophysical techniques combined with selective conduction block by nerve compression and selective desensitization by topical capsaicin treatment. Quantitative somatosensory thermotest. A key method for functional evaluation of small calibre afferent channels.

The quantitative somatosensory thermotest (QST) assesses the function of afferent channels concerned with sensory submodalities served by small calibre fibres. Measured ramps of ascending or descending temperature are applied to the skin through a Peltier contact thermode, and detection thresholds are recorded as the subject signals the onset of a particular sensation. The present study describes underlying principles, methodological aspects and normal reference values for the QST. In patients, measurement of thresholds for cold sensation, warm sensation, cold-induced pain and heat-induced pai

Blue-Light Filtering Increases the Brightness of Natural Images in Pseudophakic Adults.

PURPOSE: Several studies have suggested that blue-light filtering (BLF) can enhance the perception of brightness. Evidence for this effect, however, in pseudophakic patients, particularly using natural images, is lacking. The present study tested whether a common BLF spectral profile, often used in intraocular lens (IOL) designs, would influence brightness perception of natural images in pseudophakic individuals. METHODS: Forty pseudophakic participants (M = 71.15 ± 2.27 years) with 20/40 or better best-corrected visual acuity implanted with clear IOL implants completed a brightness matching

Assessment of newly designed fonts for visual accessibility.

PURPOSE: The visual accessibility of fonts refers to the range of print sizes and efficiency with which readers can access text. One goal of font design may be to maximize accessibility for a wide range of users including those with low vision. Here, we compare behavioral and automated methods for evaluating the accessibility of a font for both normal and simulated low vision. METHOD: We evaluated the accessibility of a newly designed font, ACT Easy. In Experiment 1, we used a behavioral (psychophysical) approach to compare regular and bold versions of ACT Easy to Courier, Frutiger, and Gotha

Seeing through the veil: blue-light filtering and peak contrast sensitivity in pseudophakic patients.

PURPOSE: Atmospheric short-wave scattered light (blue haze) limits visual range by reducing the contrast of distant objects. While theoretical models and prior research suggest that filtering short wavelengths can improve visual range, significant individual differences persist in tolerance to veiling luminance, even among individuals with similar ocular health and acuity. This study examined whether a commercially available blue-light filtering (BLF) lens design could enhance visual range under simulated blue haze conditions in an older pseudophakic population. METHODS: Forty older pseudopha

Prospective Evaluation of the Associations Between Pre-Cochlear Implant Abilities and Cochlear Implant Quality of Life-35 Profile Domain Scores.

OBJECTIVES: Although most cochlear implant (CI) research has focused on speech recognition ability as the primary outcome measure, research on self-reported, real-world functional outcomes as measured using patient-reported outcome measures is more limited but emerging. The present study explores the association between several pre-CI psychophysical and self-reported functional measures and corresponding CI quality of life (CIQOL) domain scores after implantation. DESIGN: A longitudinal study design was used involving 45 participants who underwent cochlear implantation for their first CI for
