Reproductive performance of women with müllerian anomalies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review discusses current diagnostic techniques for müllerian anomalies, reproductive outcome data, and management options in reproductive-age women. RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple retrospective studies have investigated reproductive outcomes with müllerian anomalies, but few current prospective studies exist. Uterine anomalies are associated with normal and adverse reproductive outcomes such as recurrent pregnancy loss and preterm delivery, but not infertility. Furthermore, unicornuate, didelphic, bicornuate, septate, arcuate, and diethylstilbestrol-exposed uteri have their

Reproductive disorders associated with pesticide exposure.

Exposure of men or women to certain pesticides at sufficient doses may increase the risk for sperm abnormalities, decreased fertility, a deficit of male children, spontaneous abortion, birth defects or fetal growth retardation. Pesticides from workplace or environmental exposures enter breast milk. Certain pesticides have been linked to developmental neurobehavioral problems, altered function of immune cells and possibly childhood leukemia. In well-designed epidemiologic studies, adverse reproductive or developmental effects have been associated with mixed pesticide exposure in occupational se

Workplace hazards to women's reproductive health.

Women make up nearly half of Minnesota's workforce. Thus, many women, including those of reproductive age, are exposed to workplace hazards. These hazards may be chemical-toxicants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and endocrine disruptors; physical--the result of activities or proximity to something in the environment; or biological-infectious agents. And they are of growing concern among scientists and the public. Although data on the effect of these hazards on the reproductive health of women is limited, there is evidence indicating they ought to be of concern to women and the physicians wh

[Risk of reproductive disorders in greenhouse workers].

This study reviews the evidence on the association between work in greenhouses and reproductive disorders. The analysis indicate that employment in greenhouses may increase the risk of birth defects, preterm delivery and spontaneous abortion, and also may affect birth weight. The obtained results showed that employment in the agriculture production sector (greenhouses) of more than 10 years decreased the median sperm concentration in men. The data on the effect of employment in greenhouses on the time to pregnancy are unequivocal, but most of them suggest that there is a relationship between t

[Transparency of results in assisted reproductive technology].

Clear results in ART need to take into account the technical performances of the centre but also patients selection, cycles cancelling and embryo transfer policies. The risk of a partial transparency is an inappropriate selection of patients. From classical criterias like pregnancies per oocytes retrievals or embryo transfers we are heading towards more global indicators like live births of singletons by initiated cycles rate.

Obesity and assisted reproductive technology outcomes.

Obesity is a rising health problem in Western societies. It has been related to increased morbidity and mortality rates due to several pathologies. In the field of gynaecology and reproduction, obesity is associated with menstrual disorders, hirsutism, infertility, miscarriage and obstetric complications. It is known to impair human reproduction through different mechanisms such as insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism and elevated leptin levels. Weight management and dietary intervention can reverse this situation and improve reproductive function. Obesity can also impair the outcome of assist…

Reproductive dysgenesis in wildlife: a comparative view.

Abnormal reproductive development in males has been linked to environmental contaminant exposure in a wide variety of vertebrates. These include humans, rodent models, and a large number of comparative wildlife species. In human males, abnormal reproductive development can manifest as a suite of symptoms, described collectively as testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS). TDS is also described as demasculinization or feminization of the male phenotype. The suite includes cryptorchidism, in situ germ cell carcinoma of the testis and overt testicular cancer, reduced semen quality, and hypospadias. I

Endocrine disrupters and female reproductive health.

There is growing evidence of the impact of estrogenic contaminants in the environment. Studies have shown that male fish in detergent-contaminated water express female characteristics, turtles are sex-reversed by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), male frogs exposed to a common herbicide form multiple ovaries, pseudohermaphroditic offspring are produced by polar bears, and seals in contaminated water have an excess of uterine fibroids. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (those found in the external environment that can mimic or inhibit endogenous hormones) mostly exhibit estrogenic effects, but a f

Immunity in the female sheep reproductive tract.

Immune surveillance in the female reproductive tract is dependent on the interplay of many factors that include the expression of pattern recognition receptors on epithelial cells, resident leukocyte populations and hormones, none of which are uniform. The lower reproductive tract must accommodate the presence of commensal organisms whereas the upper reproductive tract is sterile. However, the upper female reproductive tract has its own immunological challenge in that it must tolerate the presence of a semi-allogeneic fetus if pregnancy is to succeed. So, immune activation and effector mechani

Infectious causes of reproductive loss in camelids.

Reproductive losses in camelids are due to infertility, pregnancy loss, udder diseases and neonatal mortality caused by a variety of infectious diseases. Uterine infection and abortion represent the major complaint in camelid veterinary practice. The major infectious organisms in endometritis and metritis are E. coli and Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus. Abortion rates due to infectious diseases vary from 10% to more than 70% in some areas. Leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis and chlamydiosis have been diagnosed as the major causes of abortion in llamas and alpacas. In camels, brucellosis

Reproductive toxicology in occupational settings: an update.

OBJECTIVE: This article mainly attempts to review the recent human literature on the adverse effects of occupational factors on fertility, d … t. The decreasing fertility of women in Western countries can be explained by the increasing female reproduction age, rather than by occupational exposures. Also the rates for spontaneous abortions and birth defects cannot be explained by industrial exposures at the workplace.

Legal harmonization and reproductive tourism in Europe.

Legislation of ethical issues illustrates the uneasy mix of ethics and politics. Although the majority has the political right to express its moral views in the law, a number of important ethical values like autonomy, tolerance and respect for other people's opinions urge the majority to take the minorities' position into account. Ignoring pluralism in society will inevitably lead to reproductive tourism. Although European legislation and harmonization in the domain of medically assisted reproduction is presented as a partial solution to this phenomenon, it is argued that European legislation …

Impact of cancer therapy on the reproductive axis.

Cancer therapy includes surgery, chemotherapy and irradiation. Depending on the diagnosis, the location of the neoplasm and the age of the patient, these treatment modalities may be given alone or in combination. All forms of cancer therapy can affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The long-term consequences for reproductive function depend on several aspects. The sex of the patient is important, since ovarian and testicular function differ significantly. Sex hormone production in the female is dependent on the presence of germ cells, whereas this is not the case in the male. The sen

New developments reproductive technologies in deer.

In vitro embryo production is the platform for advanced reproductive technologies, such as cloning. The in vitro embryo production system developed for farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) evolved along similar lines to that pioneered by other domestic species researchers. However, applying existing in vitro embryo production methods from these other species resulted in limited success and has necessitated developing a species-specific methodology for red deer based on the their physiology. Analysis of oviduct fluid led to the development of a semi-defined fertilization and culture media system, D

[Toxocariasis: spread and impact on reproductive health].

To study the prevalence of toxocariasis and its impact on the reproductive health of inhabitants in the Saratov Region, enzyme immunoassay was used to examine 1404 patients, including 210 children, 912 females, and 282 males. Toxocariasis was shown to be a risk factor of male (oligoasthenozoospermia) and female (tuboperitoneal) infertility. The high incidence of toxocariasis in females with reproductive dysfunction (recurrent abortion) and an aggravated obstetric history complicated by chronic renal diseases is indicative of the existence of the urogenital form of toxocariasis. Subtotal obstruction of the male reproductive tract.

Bilateral obstruction of the male reproductive tract is suspected in men with azoospermia, normal testicular volume and normal FSH. A testicular biopsy is required to differentiate between an obstruction and a testicular insufficiency. Unilateral or subtotal bilateral obstructions and epididymal dysfunction may cause severe oligozoospermia in men with a normal spermatogenesis. However, information on spermatogenesis in oligozoospermic men is lacking, since testicular biopsy is not routinely performed. Men with a sperm concentration of <1 x 10(6) spermatozoa/ml were investigated for possible pa

Cytogenetic studies in patients with reproductive failure.

BACKGROUND: Cytogenetic studies in patients with reproductive failure AIM: To investigate the contribution of chromosomal abnormalities in sub fertility and in couples with repeated abortions. METHODS: Hundred and 13 couples who had at least two or more spontaneous abortions and 65 women and 63 men with infertility were analyzed cytogenetically. RESULTS: Major chromosomal rearrangements were found in 8% and minor variants in 6% in the study population. Major chromosomal aberrations were judged to explain 4.9% of recurrent abortions and 13% of infertility. Chromosomal abnormalities in infert

Uterine chemokines in reproductive physiology and pathology.

PROBLEM: Chemokines are increasingly recognized as important regulators of uterine function. METHODS OF STUDY: The following is a review of uterine chemokines, especially monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1, interleukin (IL)-8, and regulated-upon-activation normal-T-cell-expressed and -secreted (RANTES) protein, in reproductive physiology and pathology. RESULTS: It is increasingly clear that IL-8, MCP-1, RANTES and their receptors are produced by endometrial, myometrial, and trophoblast cell types in a timed and co-ordinated manner. In addition to the regulation of leukocyte migration and f
