OBJECT: Gunshot wounds to the atlantoaxial spine are uncommon injuries and rarely require treatment, as a bullet traversing this segment often results in a fatal injury. Additionally, these injuries are typically biomechanically stable. The authors report a series of 10 patients with gunshot wounds involving the lateral mass and/or bodies of the atlantoaxial complex. Their care is discussed and conclusions are drawn from these cases to identify the optimal treatment for these injuries.

A polystyrene ball C1q solid-phase assay (PSB C1q SPA) has been developed for quantitating immune complexes in human serum. The continuous medial representation (cm-rep) is an approach that makes it possible to model, normalize, and analyze anatomical structures on the basis of medial geometry. Having recently presented a partial differential equation (PDE)-based approach for 3-D cm-rep modeling [1], here we present an equivalent 2-D approach that involves solving an ordinary differential equation. This paper derives a closed form solution of this equation and shows how Pythagorean hodograph curves can be used to express the solution as a piecewise polynomial function, allowing efficient and robust medial modeling.

Between July 1992, and February 1997, 15 patients with cavernous malformations underwent interactive image-guided resection of their lesions. There were eight women and seven men in the group, ranging in age from 6 years to 62 years (mean 34 years). Clinical presentations included seizures (n = 7), headache (n = 4), and hemorrhage (n = 4). The diagnostic value of MR in the head and neck with special emphasis on the contrast medium Gd-DTPA will be demonstrated. A total of 1,260 patients underwent MR with different pulse sequences plain and with Gd-DTPA. The sequences were analyzed and compared with CT. Due to the different pattern of enhancement the contrast medium helped in differentiating malignant and benign tumors from other processes like cysts and inflammatory changes. Except lesions with small bony erosion and inflammatory changes of the salivary glands MR with Gd-DTPA proved to be diagnostically advantageous in all cases.
