Epidemiology, morphology, and molecular characterization of Stephanurus dentatus (Nematoda: Syngamidae) in wild boars from southwestern South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Stephanurus dentatus Diesing, 1839 (Nematoda: Syngamidae), commonly known as the swine kidney worm, parasitizes the renal pelvis, ureters, and perirenal fat of pigs and wild boars, occasionally causing severe pathological effects. Despite reports of low prevalence in domestic pigs in South Korea, no epidemiological data exist for wild boars. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, morphology, and molecular characteristics of S. dentatus infection in wild boars from the southwestern regions of South Korea. METHODS: A total of 167 wild boars were examined between 2009 and 20

Sustained Mechanical Occlusion of the Superior Vena Cava Safely Reduces Cardiac Filling Pressures in a Preclinical Model of Heart Failure.

Device-based therapies may augment decongestion in acute decompensated heart failure. We investigated the efficacy and safety of prolonged mechanical superior vena cava occlusion using the preCARDIA system in a swine model of heart failure. Over 6 h of preCARDIA activation, right- and left-sided filling pressures were significantly reduced. Plasma levels of the brain injury marker ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 and intracerebral arterial pressure were not significantly changed. Post-mortem evaluation did not identify gross cerebral or histologic injury. Future studies are needed to compare

Validation of Coronary Wire for the Acquisition of Intracoronary Electrocardiogram in Swine.

BACKGROUND: We report the first in-literature animal experiment to validate the intracoronary ECG signal acquired from a coronary wire compared with the direct signal from an epicardial electrode. METHODS: An animal model study was performed in a 40 kg pig. Acute myocardial ischemia was induced by intracoronary balloon inflation for 60 s. Simultaneous ECG recording and PCI guidewire electrical and motion measurements were obtained. RESULTS: The first ischemic manifestation was myocardial kinetic disturbances, followed by ST-elevation. The signals recorded from the PCI guidewire and the epica

Ex-vivo validation of nine algorithms for quantifying infarcts with late gadolinium enhancement cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

BACKGROUND: In cardiovascular magnetic resonance, late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) is the standard method to visualize myocardial infarction (MI). Many algorithms quantifying infarct size in LGE images exist. However, only few algorithms have been validated, i.e., benchmarked against an ex-vivo measurement. Furthermore, the reported algorithm performance varies considerably between studies. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the performance of all infarct measurement algorithms against an ex-vivo measurement and to promote a discourse regarding advantages and disadvantages of i

Radiation dose and gene expression analysis of wild boar 10 years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant accident.

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident led to contamination with radioactive cesium in an extensive environment in Japan in 2011. We evaluated the concentration of radioactive cesium in the skeletal muscles of 22 wild boars and the expression of IFN-γ, TLR3, and CyclinG1 in the small intestine and compared them with those of wild boar samples collected from Hyogo prefecture. The average 137Cs radioactivity concentration in wild boars in the ex-evacuation zone was 470 Bq/kg. Most of samples still showed radioactivity concentration that exceeded the regulatory limit for foods, but th

Coronary vasodilation mediated by T cells expressing choline acetyltransferase.

CD4+ T cells expressing choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) have recently been shown to cause a drop in systemic blood pressure when infused into mice. The aim of this study was to determine if ChAT-expressing T cells could regulate coronary vascular reactivity. Preconstricted segments of epicardial and intramyocardial porcine coronary arteries relaxed in response to Jurkat T cells (JT) that overexpressed ChAT (JTChAT cells). The efficacy of the JTChAT cells was similar in epicardial and intramyocardial vessels with a maximum dilator response to 3 × 105 cells/mL of 38.0 ± 6.7% and 38.7 ± 7.25%, r

Impact of viral disease hypophagia on pig jejunal function and integrity.

Pathogen challenges are often accompanied by reductions in feed intake, making it difficult to differentiate impacts of reduced feed intake from impacts of pathogen on various response parameters. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the impact of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus (PRRSV) and feed intake on parameters of jejunal function and integrity in growing pigs. Twenty-four pigs (11.34 ± 1.54 kg BW) were randomly selected and allotted to 1 of 3 treatments (n = 8 pigs/treatment): 1) PRRSV naïve, ad libitum fed (Ad), 2) PRRSV-inoculated, ad libitum fed

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance-derived left ventricular mechanics-strain, cardiac power and end-systolic elastance under various inotropic states in swine.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) strain imaging is an established technique to quantify myocardial deformation. However, to what extent left ventricular (LV) systolic strain, and therefore LV mechanics, reflects classical hemodynamic parameters under various inotropic states is still not completely clear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the correlation of LV global strain parameters measured via CMR feature tracking (CMR-FT, based on conventional cine balanced steady state free precession (bSSFP) images) with hemodynamic parameters such as cardiac index (

Loss of retinal tension and permanent decrease in retinal function: a new porcine model of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

PURPOSE: Permanent loss of visual function after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment can occur despite successful surgical reattachment in humans. New treatment modalities could be explored in a detachment model with loss of retinal function. In previous porcine models, retinal function has returned after reattachment, regardless of height and duration of detachment. Difference in retinal tension between the models and the disease might explain these different outcomes. This study investigates, for the first time in an in vivo porcine model, another characteristic of rhegmatogenous retinal detac

Persistent insulin signaling coupled with restricted PI3K activation causes insulin-induced vasoconstriction.

Insulin modulates vasomotor tone through vasodilator and vasoconstrictor signaling pathways. The purpose of the present work was to determine whether insulin-stimulated vasoconstriction is a pathophysiological phenomenon that can result from a combination of persistent insulin signaling, suppressed phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) activation, and an ensuing relative increase in MAPK/endothelin-1 (ET-1) activity. First, we examined previously published work from our group where we assessed changes in lower-limb blood flow in response to an oral glucose tolerance test (endogenous insulin sti

Japanese Encephalitis Virus infection induces inflammation of swine testis through RIG-I-NF-ĸB signaling pathway.

Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) is an important zoonotic flavivirus transmitted by mosquitos. JEV infection in sows primarily manifests as a reproductive disease such as abortion and transient infertility while in infected boars, it can cause orchitis. Previous studies mainly focused on the pathogenesis of human encephalitis caused by JEV infection, while few concentrations have been made to unveil the potential mechanism of reproductive dysfunction in JEV-infected pigs. In this study, histopathological analysis and immunohistochemistry staining was performed on testis of JEV-infected boars,

Development of a miniaturized protein microarray as a new serological IgG screening test for zoonotic agents and production diseases in pigs.

In order to monitor the occurrence of zoonotic agents in pig herds as well as to improve herd health management, the development of new cost-effective diagnostic methods for pigs is necessary. In this study, a protein microarray-based assay for the simultaneous detection of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against different zoonotic agents and pathogens causing production diseases in pigs was developed. Therefore, antigens of ten different important swine pathogens (Toxoplasma gondii, Yersinia enterocolitica, Salmonella spp., Trichinella spp., Mycobacterium avium, Hepatitis E virus, Mycoplasm

Phenyl sulfate, indoxyl sulfate and p-cresyl sulfate decrease glutathione level to render cells vulnerable to oxidative stress in renal tubular cells.

In chronic kidney disease patients, oxidative stress is generally associated with disease progression and pathogenesis of its comorbidities. Phenyl sulfate is a protein-bound uremic solute, which accumulates in chronic kidney disease patients, but little is known about its nature. Although many reports revealed that protein-bound uremic solutes induce reactive oxygen species production, the effects of these solutes on anti-oxidant level have not been well studied. Therefore, we examined the effects of protein-bound uremic solutes on glutathione levels. As a result, indoxyl sulfate, phenyl sulf

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance guided ablation and intra-procedural visualization of evolving radiofrequency lesions in the left ventricle.

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency (RF) ablation has become a mainstay of treatment for ventricular tachycardia, yet adequate lesion formation remains challenging. This study aims to comprehensively describe the composition and evolution of acute left ventricular (LV) lesions using native-contrast cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) during CMR-guided ablation procedures. METHODS: RF ablation was performed using an actively-tracked CMR-enabled catheter guided into the LV of 12 healthy swine to create 14 RF ablation lesions. T2 maps were acquired immediately post-ablation to visualize myocardial ed
