Susceptibility of different populations of ticks to entomopathogenic fungi.

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro effect of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato (s.l.) and Beauveria bassiana sensu lato (s.l.) on two distinct populations of Rhipicephalus microplus, from two different experimental farms. Bioassays were performed with engorged females, eggs and larvae. Fungal infection was evaluated based on biological parameters of treated engorged females, percentage of hatch from treated eggs, and percentage of mortality and mean lethal time (LT90) of treated larvae. When the treatments were compared between the two populations, there were

A Vegetation Index qualifying pasture edges is related to Ixodes ricinus density and to Babesia divergens seroprevalence in dairy cattle herds.

Babesia divergens, transmitted by the tick Ixodes ricinus, is the main agent of bovine piroplasmosis in France. This Apicomplexa often is present in asymptomatic carriers; however, clinical cases are rare. While numerous factors are known to influence tick density, no risk factor of contact with B. divergens has been identified for cattle. Our study aimed to explore whether a Vegetation Index could serve as an indirect indicator of within-herd B. divergens seroprevalence. In February 2007, blood samples were taken from all of the cows in 19 dairy cattle herds in Western France and IFAT serolog

Public health argument to retain current UK national controls for tick and tapeworms under the Pet Travel Scheme.

At present, the European Council is debating whether the current national controls under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), which aims to prevent the introduction of rabies and tapeworms or live ticks and their associated diseases into the United Kingdom (UK), should be harmonized amongst European Union (EU) Member States. There is a strong case to support the retention of control measures on human health grounds. Although many are aware of the implications of rabies infection, few realize the risk to the UK population if current tick and tapeworm controls under PETS were to be removed. If this wer

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) (Acari: Ixodidae): from taxonomy to control.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus, commonly known as the brown dog tick, is a three-host tick that feeds primarily on dogs and occasionally on other hosts, including humans. R. sanguineus ticks are widely distributed around the world and they are known vectors of pathogens, such as Babesia canis, Ehrlichia canis, and Rickettsia conorii. The increasing number of cases of human parasitism by R. sanguineus ticks reported in the literature indicates that the interaction between humans and R. sanguineus ticks may be more common than it is actually recognized. The indiscriminate use of acaricides is an emerg

Species composition, distribution, and ecological preferences of the ticks of grazing sheep in north-central Spain.

The distribution and ecological preferences of tick (Acari: Ixodidae) parasites of grazing sheep in the region of Aragón (north-central Spain) were surveyed on flocks four times a year and mapped into a 5 x 5 km grid. Nine tick species were found. These were species of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus group (about 95% of them Rhipicephalus turanicus Pomerantsev, in 91% of cells of the grid), Rhipicephalus bursa Canestrini & Fanzago (79% of cells), Dermacentor marginatus (Sulzer) (58% of cells), Haemaphysalis punctata Canestrini & Fanzago (74% of cells) and Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus) 14% of cells. Endemic babesiosis in another eastern state: New Jersey.

In the United States, most reported cases of babesiosis have been caused by Babesia microti and acquired in the northeast. Although three cases of babesiosis acquired in New Jersey were recently described by others, babesiosis has not been widely known to be endemic in New Jersey. We describe a case of babesiosis acquired in New Jersey in 1999 in an otherwise healthy 53-year-old woman who developed life-threatening disease. We also provide composite data on 40 cases of babesiosis acquired from 1993 through 2001 in New Jersey. The 40 cases include the one we describe, the three cases previously

Serological prevalence of bovine babesiosis in Mali.

A serological survey of cattle in Mali was carried out to determine the prevalence of antibody activity to Babesia bovis and B. bigemina. It was found that the level of B. bovis infection as indicated by antibody activities was too low to be of immediate concern. However, the serological prevalence of B. bigemina was high and this may indicate a potential disease problem. It was also found that when zebu and N'Dama cattle grazed together the N'Dama were twice as likely to have positive titres to Babesia as were the zebus.

Molecular detection of Ehrlichia chaffeensis in marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) and their parasitic Amblyomma triste ticks in Argentina suggests a local transmission cycle.

BACKGROUND: Since the first finding of Ehrlichia chaffeensis in the Argentinian marsh deer populations in 2018, we have conducted ongoing surveillance efforts to better understand the ecological and epidemiological dynamics of this zoonotic tick-borne pathogen in the region. METHODS: Over a period of 7 years (2018-2024) we analyzed blood and tissue samples from 40 marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) and 13 parasitic Amblyomma triste ticks in the Paraná River Delta, Argentina. RESULTS: We identified E. chaffeensis DNA in two deer blood samples and in the salivary glands of three A. triste tic

Rickettsia tillamookensis-like strain in brown dog ticks in Brazil.

Brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus linnaei) collected from dogs in northeastern Brazil in 2015 tested positive for a rickettsial organism phylogenetically related to Rickettsia tillamookensis (referred to as R. tillamookensis-like). One of the dogs with R. tillamookensis-like-positive ticks tested positive for IgG antibodies to Rickettsia rickettsii antigens, suggesting a potential reaction to spotted fever group rickettsiae. Future research should assess whether the rickettsia detected herein is R. tillamookensis or a closely related species, its distribution, potential vectors, and possible path

Historical climate change reshapes the thermal niche of Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (Acari: Ixodidae) under uncertainty.

Climate change is altering the environmental conditions that regulate vector persistence, yet attribution remains difficult where long-term surveillance data are limited. Here, we developed a trait-based mechanistic framework to quantify climate-attributable changes in the environmental persistence potential of Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. using a host-delay persistence metric, RH,τ. The framework integrates temperature- and humidity-dependent development, mortality, fecundity, and dog-host availability within a factual-counterfactual climate design. Seasonal dynamics were retained by computi

Entomopathogenic fungi in the control of Rhipicephalus microplus at different developmental stages: an in vitro study.

Given the need to develop sustainable strategies for the management of ectoparasites, the inclusion of eco-friendly mycoacaricide and/or mycoinsecticide products has become increasingly imperative. Rhipicephalus microplus is an ectoparasitic arthropod of major economic and sanitary importance in livestock production, acting as a vector of pathogens of veterinary relevance and causing substantial production losses. Control of this tick species has become progressively more challenging due to the widespread development of resistance to synthetic chemical acaricides commonly used in cattle produc

Ticks on migrating birds in southwestern Poland: occurrence of Ixodes ricinus and the first Polish record of Haemaphysalis concinna on birds.

During ornithological research conducted at the Milicz Fishponds Nature Reserve (Barycz Valley Landscape Park, southwestern Poland) from May to July 2024, a total of 245 birds were captured. Four ticks were collected: two Ixodes ricinus larvae and two Haemaphysalis concinna nymphs. We present the first confirmed record of H. concinna parasitising a great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) in Poland. Identification of H. concinna was based on both morphological identification keys and molecular analysis of the COI gene. This finding expands current knowledge on the biodiversity of ticks p

Acaricidal activity of Astragalus polysaccharides nanoemulsion against camel tick, Hyalomma dromedarii.

Hyalomma dromedarii (H. dromedarii) is a major ectoparasite of camels in arid regions such as Egypt, where it causes significant economic losses and transmits several zoonotic pathogens. This study evaluated the acaricidal efficacy of a novel, locally prepared Astragalus polysaccharides nanoemulsified formulation (APS-NE) against various developmental stages of H. dromedarii infesting camels. APS-NE was prepared using ultrasonic emulsification and characterized by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and GC-MS, revealing uniform nanoparticle size (30-53 nm), good water s

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) and rickettsiae associated with wild boars in a rural area of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Wild boars or feral pigs are classified by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Resources (IBAMA) in "Category I of invasive exotic species". They cause economic losses, harm the environment, serve as hosts and reservoirs for several zoonotic disease agents, and provide a blood meal for tick species that act as vectors for zoonotic diseases. The objective of this study was to identify tick species on wild boars, assess host-seeking ticks in the related environment, and identify other potential tick hosts coexisting with wild boars on a farm located in the state of Minas Ge
