Association between periodontal condition and use of tongue piercing: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the periodontal status and risk factors for gingival recession in individuals with tongue piercings. METHODS: Sixty cases (individuals with tongue piercings) and 120 controls (non-users) in Brazil, between 13 and 28 years of age, from both genders and a mix of races were selected. The clinical evaluation of patient oral health records included periodontal parameters and the presence of tooth fracture. Cases and controls were compared with demographic, behavioural and clinical variables of interest. Risk variables for the occurrence of gi

An infant with primary tooth loss and palmar hyperkeratosis: a novel mutation in the NTRK1 gene causing congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis.

Patients with congenital insensitivity to pain and anhidrosis (CIPA), caused by mutations in the NTRK1 gene, can be difficult to diagnose because of their variable presentation, the lack of simple diagnostic tests, and the paucity of cases reported in North America. We describe a 1-year-old infant who had tooth loss and palmar hyperkeratosis as the primary manifestations of CIPA. He was initially evaluated by a pediatric dentist and epidermal dysplasia syndromes were considered, but insensitivity to pain was suspected after a skeletal survey revealed an unrecognized skull fracture. Nerve condu

Five-year prospective follow-up report of the Astra tech standard dental implant in clinical treatment.

Between 1994 and 1999, 515 Astra standard implants were placed and documented prospectively in 107 patients. Of these implants, 364 were placed in original jawbone, 38 in areas augmented with local osteoplasty, and 113 in bone grafts from the iliac crest. The main indications for implantation were an atrophic edentulous alveolar crest (n = 361) and a shortened dental arch (n = 113). Single-tooth implants were excluded. In a special clinical examination, 56 patients with 258 implants were investigated. The average in situ time of the implants was 34.2 months. Failing osseointegration (n = 10),

Cemental tear: a risk factor in periodontal attachment loss.

The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the influence of cemental tear as a risk factor in periodontal attachment loss. Seventeen extracted, single-rooted teeth showing loss of attachment and having one cemental tear surface and one opposite intact surface were examined. The teeth were stained in 0.1% toluidine blue to visualize attached periodontal ligament remnants and examined in a light microscope under incident light. On each tooth, loss of attachment was measured along the long axis of the root from the cemento-enamel junction to the most coronal level of the periodonta

Fractured instruments in endodontics: understanding incidence, mechanisms, and emerging retrieval techniques.

Fractured instrument retrieval remains one of the most challenging aspects of endodontics, with reported incidence rates ranging from 0.3% to 12%. This complication is particularly common with nickel‒titanium (NiTi) rotary files used in curved canals. Instrument separation hinders effective canal disinfection, compromises the quality of obturation, and may necessitate additional interventions such as bypassing, retrieval, or surgical management. Conventional retrieval techniques often lead to dentin loss, compromising root structure. The use of dental operating microscopes and their integratio

A Case of Hypophosphatasia Started Enzyme Replacement Therapy Since Babyhood Stage.

BACKGROUND: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inherited disease caused by low activity of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase. Dental characteristics include premature loss of primary teeth, enlarged pulp chambers, and enamel hypoplasia. Although enzyme replacement therapy with asfotase alfa was approved in 2015, there are few reports about the dental outcomes of this treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 1-year-old girl referred to our hospital had already lost two primary teeth at the time of her initial visit. She started enzyme replacement therapy 6 days after birth, and genetic analysis later c

Trapezial Design Technique for Autogenous Bone Graft in Esthetic Zone Implant Treatment.

We report bone augmentation for alveolar bone loss at the bottom of the nasal cavity in conjunction with simultaneous implant placement in the same operative field in the esthetic zone. The patient was a 33-year-old man who was referred to us requesting implant treatment after undergoing tooth extraction (#12) due to root fracture. An examination was performed using cone beam computed tomography (CT) and simulation software. The results indicated insufficient volume of labial bone for the requested procedure, especially at the planned site of the implant neck. Therefore, bone augmentation was

Specific features of mandible structure and elemental composition in the polyphagous amphipod Acanthogammarus grewingkii endemic to Lake Baikal.

BACKGROUND: In crustaceans, several mechanisms provide for the mechanical strength of the cuticular "tools" (dactyli, claws, jaws), which serve to catch and crush food objects. Studies on the mandibles of the endemic Baikal amphipod Acanthogammarus grewingkii by means of electron microscopy and elemental analysis have revealed specific structural features of these mouthparts. METHODOLOGY: The fine structure of the mandible has been studied by means of SEM, TEM, and AFM; methods used to analyze its elemental and phase composition include XEPMA, XPS, SEM-EDS analysis, and XRD. CONCLUSION: Func

Dentointegration of a titanium implant: a case report.

PURPOSE: This case illustrates a pulp tissue-induced dentointegration of a titanium implant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One commercially available titanium implant with a sand-blasted and acid-etched surface was placed in the maxilla of a foxhound where the palatinal root of the previously (i.e., 8 weeks) removed first molar was unintentionally retained. After 8 weeks of nonsubmerged healing, the dissected block was prepared for immunohistochemical (osteocalcin) and histomorphometrical analysis. RESULTS: A reparative hard tissue had formed within the artificially opened pulp canal. Also, the ext

Rapid tooth movement and orthodontic treatment using dentoalveolar distraction (DAD). Long-term (5 years) follow-up of a Class II case.

The purpose of this report is to describe the dentoalveolar distraction (DAD) technique and to present its effects on the surrounding structures by presenting a Class II case. A 15-year-old skeletal and dental Class II female patient with an overjet of 9 mm was treated by DAD osteogenesis. A custom-made, rigid, tooth-borne intraoral distraction device was used for rapid canine retraction. Osteotomies surrounding the canines were made to achieve rapid movement of the canines within the dentoalveolar segment, in compliance with distraction osteogenesis principles. The amount of canine retraction

A comparative study between cone-beam computed tomography and periapical radiographs in the diagnosis of simulated endodontic complications.

AIM: To compare cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) with periapical radiography for the identification of simulated endodontic complications. METHODOLOGY: Sixteen human teeth, in three mandibles, were submitted to the following simulated endodontic complications: G1) fractured endodontic file; G2) root perforation; G3) cast post with deviation; G4) external root resorption. Periapical radiographs were taken of each tooth at three different angles, and CBCT scan was taken. One calibrated examiner who was specialized in dental radiology interpreted the images. The results were analysed using t

Space maintenance.

OBJECTIVE: The use of a space maintainer appliance, or restoration of a carious primary tooth that can then act as a natural space maintainer, may potentially obviate the consequences of loss of arch length and the need for complex orthodontic treatment at a later stage. Nevertheless, all space maintainer appliances are plaque retentive and may predispose to dental caries and gingival inflammation. Space maintainer appliances may also impinge on the soft tissues, interfere with eruption of adjacent teeth, fracture, and become dislodged or lost. This review article provides a summary of the ava

Radiographic evaluation.

The bulk of the tooth, that is, the root and most of the periodontium, can be visualized only by means of radiographs. Consequently, a lot of pathology remains undiscovered if clinical examination does not involve radiography. Although lesions such as caries can be recognized without radiography, the full extent of the lesions, and whether pulpal and periapical involvement is present as a consequence, cannot be assessed. In other words, a clinical examination is not complete without radiography. Periodontal disease, endodontic disease, caries, resorptive lesions, fractures, bone pathology, and

The dentition in the osteogenesis imperfecta syndromes.

The deciduous and permanent teeth in some patients with osteogenesis imperfecta syndromes are blue or brown and opalescent. As shown by radiologic examination, the pulp chambers and root canals are completely or partially obliterated by abnormal dentin. The junctions between the crowns and roots are more constricted than normal. Deciduous opalescent teeth lose their enamel readily and wear more easily than normal. Unusual wear does not occur as frequently in permanent opalescent teeth as in deciduous teeth. No relationship has been shown between the number of fractures or deformity and the deg

Key Learnings from Clinical Research and Real-World Evidence on Asfotase Alfa Effectiveness in Hypophosphatasia: 10 Years Post-Approval.

First reported in 1948, hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare systemic disease caused by deficient activity of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme. Patients with HPP experience skeletal and dental manifestations such as rickets/osteomalacia, fractures, pseudofractures, and premature tooth loss, as well as nonskeletal symptoms such as pain and muscle weakness, which result in impaired mobility and poor quality of life. For decades, no specific treatment was available for HPP and the disease was often fatal in infants. Asfotase alfa is a tissue-nonspecific ALP enzyme replacement ther

Conservative treatment of a unicystic ameloblastoma by marsupialization with a favorable response: A case report and review of the literature.

Ameloblastoma is a benign tumor of odontogenic epithelium which is slow growing, locally invasive, expansive that may result with asymmetries of the face. Conservative treatment of odontogenic tumors with marsupialization is not common but can be done successfully in those with cystic pattern. The aim of this case and literature review is to propose marsupialization as an initial procedure for its treatment. We have presented a case of an ameloblastoma involving 56-year-old male patient. Orthopantomography and computed tomography showed the lesion extended between the right molar region and le
