BACKGROUND: After a concussion, athletes may be at increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Altered perception of action boundaries (ABP), or the limits of one's action capabilities, is one possible mechanism for this increase in injury risk after concussion.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in symptoms, neurocognitive, vestibular/oculomotor, and action boundary function between subjects with no concussion history (NoHx) and concussion history (ConcHX).
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh.
PARTICIPANTS: ConcHx (n = 22; age: 21.8 ± 3.0 yea

Dense-granule deficiency (DGD) is an inherited platelet disorder due to the absence of dense granules essential for activation of platelets in the event of vascular injury. Decreased platelet dense granules can be detected by electron microscopy, while other tests of hemostasis, including platelet function analyzer (PFA®) closure times, may be normal. The present case report describes a patient with a lifelong history of mucocutaneous bleeding and excessive hemorrhage with resection of vestibular Schwannoma. After hemostasis was obtained the case was aborted and the neurosurgeon noted bleeding

Optokinetic afternystagmus follows optokinetic nystagmus as an expression of the central velocity storage integrator discharge and its fast phase is beating in the same direction as the previous optokinetic nystagmus. We investigated the correlation between vestibulo-ocular reflex and optokinetic afternystagmus in normal subjects and in patients with bilateral vestibular disorders. The aim of this study was to determine the possible role of optokinetic afternystagmus as a diagnostic test for identifying functional vestibular disorders. The subjects were examined by electronystagmography and ve

UNLABELLED: Motion-induced anxiety and agoraphobia are more frequent symptoms in patients with vestibular migraine than migraine without vertigo. The neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a therapeutic target for migraine and vestibular migraine, but the link between motion hypersensitivity, anxiety, and CGRP is relatively unexplored, especially in preclinical mouse models. To further examine this link, we tested the effects of systemic CGRP and off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) on elevated plus maze (EPM) and rotarod performance in male and female C57BL/6J mice. Rotarod abili

The burden of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity consequences caused by gentamicin warrants preventive therapeutic measures. Our aim was to evaluate combined and potentially synergistic effects of rosuvastatin and curcumin, both possessing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, compared to their monotherapies in a gentamicin-induced model of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. In a randomized, controlled study, 36 male Wistar rats were allocated to six groups and treated for 5 days: negative control group received solvent, model group gentamicin (100 mg/kg, intraperitoneally), treatment groups

BACKGROUND: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) provide assessment of vestibular function. They consist in picking up compound muscle action potentials in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles in response to auditory stimulation of the vestibulum. VEMP testing has found application mainly in peripheral vestibular disorders, whereas reports about VEMPs in central vestibular lesions are rather scarce.
AIMS OF THE STUDY: Based on the physiological connections between the cerebellum and the vestibular nuclei, we investigated the influence on VEMPs of cerebellar and lower-brainstem strok

BACKGROUND: Unsteadiness during standing and walking is a frequent complaint of patients with polyneuropathy (PNP).
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether balance disorders in patients with PNP may be caused by reduced proprioceptive input from the feet alone or whether impaired vestibular input, resulting from involvement of the vestibular nerve, can be an additional factor.
METHODS: A total of 37 patients (mean age 65 years +/- 12 SD; 12 women) with electrodiagnostically confirmed PNP (predominantly axonal: 18; predominantly demyelinating: 19) underwent horizontal search-coil head-impulse testing

PURPOSE: Usher syndrome type II (USH2) is the most common form of Usher syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by moderate to severe hearing loss, postpuberal onset of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), and normal vestibular function. Mutations in the USH2A gene have been shown to be responsible for most cases of USH2. To further elucidate the role of USH2A in USH2, mutation screening was undertaken in three Chinese families with USH2.
METHODS: Three unrelated Chinese families, consisting of six patients and 10 unaffected relatives, were examined clinically, and 100 normal Chinese in

Ménière's disease (MD) is a debilitating disorder with unclear pathophysiology whose diagnosis often relies on clinical judgment rather than objective testing. To complicate matters further, a dissociation has emerged between two vestibular function tests commonly used in patients with MD to examine the same end-organ (the semicircular canals): the caloric test and video head impulse testing (vHIT). Caloric responses are often abnormal, while vHIT results remain normal. Explaining this dissociation could reveal novel insights into MD pathophysiology. Here, we conduct a histopathological study …

This study investigated the effects of head position on gain values during video head impulse tests (vHITs). Different head positions were used for vHIT of the horizontal semicircular canals of 20 healthy controls and 18 patients with unilateral vestibular loss (UVL), with head velocities ranging from 150°/s to 200°/s. Differences in vestibulo-ocular reflex gain in the control and patient groups according to head position (0° and 30° downward pitch) were analyzed. In the unaffected control group, the 30° pitched-down position resulted in a mean gain increase of up to 1.0 in both ears (right ea
