Vestibular effects on respiratory outflow in the decerebrate cat.

Recordings were made from phrenic, abdominal and intercostal nerves following electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve to test for the presence of vestibulo-respiratory connections in cats that were decerebrate, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated. Short stimulus trains (2 or 3 shocks) at intensities < or = 125 microA typically elicited responses bilaterally in all of the respiratory nerves; the onset latency of the evoked activity was < 15 ms from the effective shock. The mean peak-to-peak amplitudes of integrated vestibulo-respiratory responses were 15% of the average amplitude of s

Receptor-mediated release of inositol phosphates in the cochlear and vestibular sensory epithelia of the rat.

Various neurotransmitters, hormones and other modulators involved in intercellular communication exert their biological action at receptors coupled to phospholipase C (PLC). This enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PtdInsP2) to inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) and 1,2-diacylglycerol (DG) which act as second messengers. In the organ of Corti of the guinea pig, the InsP3 second messenger system is linked to muscarinic cholinergic and P2y purinergic receptors. However, nothing is known about the InsP3 second messenger system in the vestibule. In this stud

Defining the relationship between cochlear hearing loss and acoustic reflex thresholds.

In this study several methods of defining the relationship between the magnitude of cochlear hearing loss and the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) levels were examined, with a view to defining the appropriate upper limits of ART that would ease clinical applicability and reduce the false positive rate. The 90th percentile, two standard deviations (SD) from the mean, the regression method and an empirical method based on the scatter plots of the ART at each activator frequency were all applied to the results of 99 patients with cochlear and/or peripheral vestibular pathology. The upper limits of

[Functional and morphologic findings following chronic vitamin A deficiency in young rats].

Pregnant rats were fed a vitamin A-depleted diet. After weaning, 40 litters (10 controls, 30 experimental) were divided into eight groups, four female and four male. All groups were given the same diet. The control groups (male and female) received 100 IU vitamin A/day, the deficient groups only a maintenance dose of 1-2 IU vitamin A/day. One female and one male group were repleted with vitamin A after the 27th day of life and two further groups of both sexes were repleted after the 49th day of life. After the 23th day of life all litters were trained for the Rail Test and after the 27th day t

Neurohumoral mechanism of space motion sickness.

This paper reviews existing hypotheses concerning the mechanisms of adaptation of the vestibular apparatus and related somatosensory systems to microgravity with reference to the flight data. Having in view theoretical concepts and experimental data accumulated in space flights, a conceptual model of the development of a funtional system responsible for the termination of vestibular dysfuntion and space motion sickness manifestations is presented. It is also shown that changes in the hormonal status during motion sickness induced by vestibular stimulation give evidence that endocrine regulatio

Microfissure in the oval window area.

Examination of 331 human temporal bones revealed the presence of microfissure in the oval window area in 25%. The youngest temporal bone in which the microfissure was observed was from a child eight years old and the oldest temporal bone was from an individual 102 years old. It appears that hte microfissure in this area occurs extremely rarely before 10 years of age, that it begins to be observed after the age of 10, and that the incidence of this fissure increases sharply at about age 40. In 61% of the bones in which the microfissure was observed, it was present both superior and inferior to

Cortical and subcortical correlates of perceptual responses during sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation: a BOLD fMRI study.

The cortical and subcortical circuitry underpinning motion sickness is poorly understood. However, certain regions - including the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC) - are known to be involved in the generation of nausea. The PIVC, in particular, is believed to serve an important role in the processing of vestibular inputs. We have previously used low-frequency sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation (sGVS) to induce perceptions of side-to-side motion, which also induces nausea in ~ 40% of people. While sGVS has been previously used with bra

Early Rehabilitation Exercise Promotes Vestibular Compensation in UVN Mice by Regulating Microglial Polarization Balance via the PGC-1α/FNDC5/BDNF Pathway.

Acute unilateral vestibular lesions cause disabling vertigo, postural imbalance, and gait instability. Functional recovery depends on vestibular compensation (VC), a neuroplastic process whose cellular and molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Although vestibular rehabilitation effectively accelerates recovery in clinical practice, the underlying pathways are still elusive. Here, we investigated how exercise-based vestibular rehabilitation modulates neuroinflammation and microglial polarization within the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) in a mouse model of unilateral vestibular

Inner Ear Pathologies After Cochlear Implantation in Guinea Pigs: Functional, Histopathological, and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Mediated Apoptosis.

OBJECTIVES: Vestibular dysfunction is one of the most common complications of cochlear implantation (CI); however, the pathological changes and mechanisms underlying inner ear damage post-CI remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the functional and histopathological changes in the cochlea and vestibule as well as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis in guinea pigs after CI. DESIGN: Auditory brainstem response, ice water test, and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were used to assess cochlear and vestibular function in guinea pigs before and after CI. His

Otopathologic Patterns of Cellular Degeneration in the Peripheral Vestibular Organ Secondary to Head Trauma.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined patterns of cellular and neural degeneration in the peripheral vestibular system following head trauma, comparing cases with and without skull/temporal bone fractures. METHODS: We analyzed 26 temporal bones (17 cases) with head trauma with fractures (six cases, nine ears) and ones without fractures (11 cases, 17 ears). Appropriate age-matched control groups comprising temporal bones without temporal bone pathology were included for comparative purposes. Histopathological analyses included counts of Scarpa's ganglion cells (ScGCs) in the superior and inferior ves

Cisplatin Differentially Damages Mammalian Vestibular End Organs.

OBJECTIVES: Cisplatin is an effective anticancer drug that can induce cochleotoxicity in up to 50 to 60% of treated patients. However, the vestibulotoxic potential of cisplatin remains unclear. Our lab previously developed a multicycle model of cisplatin administration in mice that results in hearing loss similar to that observed clinically. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively characterize the functional and morphological consequences of cisplatin on the vestibular periphery in this mouse model. DESIGN: Twenty-nine adult CBA/CaJ mice were assigned to control or cisplatin-treated

Source analyses of axial and vestibular evoked potentials associated with brainstem-spinal reflexes show cerebellar and cortical contributions.

In this work we examine the possible neural basis for two brainstem-spinal reflexes using source analyses of brain activity recorded over the cortex and posterior fossa. In a sample of 5 healthy adult subjects, using axial and vestibular stimulation by means of applied impulsive forces, evoked potentials were recorded with 63 channels using a 10 % cerebellar extension montage. In parallel, EMG was recorded from soleus and tibialis anterior muscles and accelerometry from the lower leg. Recordings over the cerebellum (ECeG) confirmed the presence of short latency (SL) potentials and these were a
