Impairment of adrenal function is a great hazard to patients undergoing major operation. The most important adrenal steroids are glucocorticoids (hydrocortisone), 17-ketosteroids, mineralo-corticoids (aldosterone), and small amounts of estrogen and progesterone. Urinary output of 17-hydroxycorticoids reflects overall adrenal cortical activity. Under severe stress this output increases greatly. Adrenal replacement therapy is facilitated by the advent of more powerful and more soluble adrenal hormone derivatives. Adreno cortical function was carried out in 43 cases of leprosy. These cases were further divided into tuberculoid, borderline, lepromatous and Lepra reaction. Serum and urinary electrolyte, urinary 17-Ketosteroid and 17-Ketogenic steroid and plasma cortisol levels were measured to assess the adrenocortical status in these different forms of leprosy. Estimation of plasma cortisol by fluorometric technique desorbed by Mallingly's was carried out in 56 cases, including 38 cases of myopia (19 cases of simple myopia and 19 cases of degenerative myopia) and 18 normal individuals. The experience with treatment of 34 children with gynecomastia is summarized. The examination included roentgenography of the Turkish saddle, definition of bone age, investigation of buccal sex chromatin, excretion of 17-ketosteroids, excretory urography against the background of retropneumoperitoneum, ultrasound investigation of the mammary glands. In juvenile gynecomastia, the mammary glands were removed, the expectant tactic being considered unwarranted. The long-term results of the surgical treatment are good.

BACKGROUND: Hirsutism in women is usually caused by benign adrenal or ovarian disorders, but it can also be caused by adrenal carcinoma. The most effective way to identify such carcinomas is not known.
METHODS: We measured serum and urinary steroids before and after the administration of 3 mg of dexamethasone per day for five days in 14 hirsute women with histologically proved adrenal tumors (12 adrenal carcinomas and 2 adrenal adenomas) and in 73 women with hirsutism of non-neoplastic origin.

A 30 year old patient with normal masculine phenotype, karyotype 46 XY with a congenital left inguinal hernia, was studied. This hernia contained (at surgery): uterus, tubes and a hypoplasic vagina, as well as testis. The Müllerian structures and the right testicle, were resected, and left orchidopexy was performed.
