[Pregnancy and delivery in a woman with Wilson's disease (degeneratio hepatoleuticularis)].

The authors present the course of two gestations and labours in women with Wilson's disease. Both patients were treated with D-penicillamine during pregnancy. As a result of their observations, the authors suggest that Wilson's disease requires proper diagnosis and cure before pregnancy and adequate care during pregnancy. In such a situation Wilson's disease should not be a high risk factor for pregnant women and their babies. It should be pointed out that undiagnosed Wilson's disease can be a cause of habitual abortion and infertility.

The Progress of Research on Genetic Factors of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss.

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is both mental and physical health problem affecting about 1-5% of women of childbearing age. The etiology of RPL is complex, involving chromosomal abnormalities, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, and endometrial dysfunction. The causes of abortion are still unknown in more than 50% of these cases. With the development of science and technology, an increasing number of scholars focus on this field and find that genetic factors may play an essential role in unexplained RPL, such as embolism-related genes, immune factor-related genes, and chromosomal numeri

Diagnostic factors for recurrent pregnancy loss: an expanded workup.

PURPOSE: There is limited information on the risk factors for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). METHODS: In this study, a patient-based approach was used to investigate the possible involvement and relative relevance of a large number of diagnostic factors in 843 women with RPL who underwent an extensive diagnostic workup including 44 diagnostic factors divided into 7 major categories. RESULTS: The rates of abnormalities found were: (1) genital infections: 11.74%; (2) uterine anatomic defects: 23.72%; (3) endocrine disorders: 29.42%; (4) thrombophilias: 62%; (5) autoimmune abnormalities: 39.2%

The genomic basis of sporadic and recurrent pregnancy loss: a comprehensive in-depth analysis of 24,900 miscarriages.

RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the genetic cause of sporadic and recurrent pregnancy loss and does the frequency and nature of chromosomal abnormalities play a role? Types and frequency of all identifiable chromosomal abnormalities were determined to inform our understanding, medical management and recurrence risk for patients experiencing pregnancy loss. DESIGN: Genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism-based chromosomal microarray (SNP-CMA) were used to evaluate 24,900 products of conception samples from various forms of pregnancy losses. RESULTS: Sporadic miscarriage (64.7%) or recurrent pre

Pleiotropic roles of melatonin in endometriosis, recurrent spontaneous abortion, and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Melatonin is a neurohormone synthesized from the aromatic amino acid tryptophan mainly by the pineal gland of mammals. Melatonin acts as a broad-spectrum antioxidant, powerful free radical scavenger, anti-inflammatory agent, anticarcinogenic factor, sleep inducer and regulator of the circadian rhythm, and potential immunoregulator. Melatonin and reproductive system are interrelated under both physiological and pathological conditions. Oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune dysregulation are associated with the pathogenesis of the female reproductive system which causes endometriosis (EMS),

Vascular endothelial growth factor and recurrent spontaneous abortion: a meta-analysis.

To evaluate the association between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene polymorphisms and the risk of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA), a meta-analysis of published case-control studies for the VEGF gene polymorphisms (gene polymorphisms reported more than three times were selected) and the risk of RSA. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for codominant, dominant and recessive genetic models were assessed by RevMan software. Eight studies with 2813 cases and 2830 controls were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled analysis showed that -2578C/A, -1154G/A pol

Pregnancy outcomes following Tompkins metroplasty.

Eighteen patients with poor reproductive histories and 2 patients with primary infertility underwent Tompkins metroplasty for a septate uterus. There were 19 pregnancies within 2 years of surgery, and 11 patients had at least 1 viable pregnancy, for an overall success rate of 55%. One of the infertile patients conceived and delivered. The average fecundability rate for the first 24 months was 0.078 (normal, 0.20). The cumulative pregnancy rate at 27 months was 94% by the life-table method. The group of patients (n = 14) with two or more losses and no other major risk factors for reproductive f

Sneddon's syndrome with anticardiolipin antibodies--complications and treatment.

We investigated 2 patients with Sneddon's syndrome, elevated anticardiolipin antibodies and systemic complications, which included stroke, habitual abortions, cardiac valvular lesions, acrocyanosis, hypertension and renal insufficiency. Treatment with a combination of immunosuppressive agents and warfarin or aspirin prevented further complications and improved renal function. It is important for those in different specialties to be aware of this potentially treatable disorder.
