Osteoporosis is a global health concern and a major contributor to worldwide mortality rates. Vertebral fractures due to osteoporosis are common and often undetected. Since vertebral fractures are often missed, evidence and guidelines suggest that vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) may optimise current approaches to bone density tests. We aimed to integrate VFA into an Australian Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) and measure the impact it had on osteoporosis treatment initiation.A retrospective case note review was undertaken to determine the number of clinic patients receiving VFA before the ch

Sarcopenia is an increasingly recognized complication of cirrhosis that is associated with morbidity and mortality. Differences in the prevalence and prognosis of sarcopenia between men and women have been reported in other patient groups, but there is insufficient understanding of how sex impacts the prognostic value of sarcopenia in cirrhosis. A search of MEDLINE and Embase was conducted from earliest entries to April 2021. Studies were included if they examined sex-stratified mortality impact of reduced muscle function or mass in outpatient populations with cirrhosis. We identified 700 stud

Redinger, AL and Baker, BS. Oral contraceptives and female rowers' skeletal health. J Strength Cond Res 37(3): 669-677, 2023-Previous studies suggest that women using oral contraceptives (OC) experience fewer skeletal benefits from exercise compared with non-OC users. These findings may be especially important for athletes competing in weight-supported sports with a high prevalence of low bone mineral density and fracture, such as rowing. The purpose of this study was to examine skeletal health and bone injuries in collegiate female rowers. Forty-nine National Collegiate Athletic Association D

Lumbar 1 vertebrae are among those most commonly fracture due to osteoporosis. The strength of human vertebrae and its structural, microstructural and material determinants have been the subject of numerous studies. However, a comprehensive evaluation of properties beyond maximum load to fracture has not been available for the L1 vertebrae. The objective of this study was to document these properties in association with each other and with the geometric, density and cancellous and cortical structure properties for human L1 vertebrae. Bone volume fraction (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th),

Osteoporosis is a common chronic metabolic bone disease often under-diagnosed and under-treated due to the limited access to bone mineral density (BMD) examinations, e.g., via Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). This paper proposes a method to predict BMD from Chest X-ray (CXR), one of the most commonly accessible and low-cost medical imaging examinations. The proposed method first automatically detects Regions of Interest (ROIs) of local CXR bone structures. Then a multi-ROI deep model with transformer encoder is developed to exploit both local and global information in the chest X-ray im

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The definition of sarcopenia was recently updated by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia (EWGSOP2), and consensus criteria for the diagnosis of malnutrition have been presented by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence and mortality related to categorisation of patients according to these definitions in a geriatric hospital setting.
METHOD: Fifty-six consecutive geriatric inpatients (84y (SD 7.3), 68% women) underwent test of handgrip strength (HGS) and five-rise chair stand test (5CST). Muscle mass

Serum toxic metals have been implicated in development of many diseases. This study investigated the association between blood levels of lead and cadmium with abnormal bone mineral density (BMD) and incidence of osteoporosis. Sixty Saudi male adults age matching were assigned into two groups: A healthy control group (n = 30) and osteoporosis patients diagnosed according to T-score (n = 30). Serum calcium, vitamin D, osteocalcin, lead, cadmium were measured. Osteoporotic group showed a highly significant elevation of blood lead and cadmium levels compared to the control group (p <0.001). The 2017 Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guideline update suggests bone mineral density testing to assess fracture risk in patients with chronic kidney disease, but dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is not available in most dialysis facilities. Radiographic absorptiometry is an inexpensive and quick method for evaluating bone mineral density. Therefore, we analyzed a historical cohort of 456 maintenance hemodialysis patients to determine whether metacarpal bone mineral density measured by digital image processing, a computer-assisted radiographic absorptiometry technique, pred

INTRODUCTION: Reports of elevated bone mass (EBM) on routine DXA scanning are not infrequent. However, epidemiological studies of EBM are few in number and definition thresholds variable. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and causes of EBM in the general population referred to a single university hospital - catering for a population of 4 million inhabitants - for DXA scanning.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: DXA databases were initially searched for individuals with a bone mineral density (BMD) Z-score ≥+4 at any site in the lumbar spine or hip from April 1st, 2008 to April 30st, 2

Bone mineral density (BMD) can be measured at multiple skeletal sites using various technologies to aid clinical decision-making in bone and mineral disorders. BMD by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has a critical role in predicting risk of fracture, diagnosis of osteoporosis, and monitoring patients. In clinical practice, DXA remains the most available and best validated tool for monitoring patients. A quality baseline DXA scan is essential for comparison with all subsequent scans. Monitoring patients with serial measurements requires technical expertise and knowledge of the least sign

Primary osteoporosis in childhood encompasses a range of bone fragility conditions that typically have a genetic origin. Understanding of the pathophysiology and genetics of primary osteoporosis has increased dramatically over the past 10 years. The clinical manifestations and consequences of the disease range from mild to severe, with the degree of growth retardation and bony deformity reflecting the severity and the underlying pathology. In children, primary osteoporosis is most commonly caused by one of the forms of osteogenesis imperfecta, which comprises a group of disorders characterised

Pb(III) sorption to hydrous amorphous SiO2 was studied as a function of pH and ionic strength using XAS to characterize the sorption products formed. Pb sorption increased with increasing pH and decreasing ionic strength. The XAS data indicated that the mechanism of Pb(II) sorption to the SiO2 surface was pH-dependent. At pH < 4.5, a mononuclear inner-sphere Pb sorption complex with ionic character dominated the Pb surface speciation. Between pH 4.5 and pH 5.6, sorption increasingly occurred via the formation of surface-attached covalent polynuclear Pb species, possibly Pb-Pb dimers, and these
