Rudolph Virchow's Upper Silesia report: the starting point for his simultaneous engagement with public health and antisemitism.

In 2023 an important anniversary took place. It regards Virchow's report on the Upper Silesia epidemic typhus, which was associated with the death of numerous Polish peasants. It is also the starting point of Virchow's political career and fight against antisemitism, which has reached fearful levels in academia. Antisemitism is not new, but the recrudescence following the October 7th massacre of Jewish and not-Jewish people is appalling and recalls Virchow's vehemence of the past a few decades before the Nazi extermination of the Shoah during the World War II.

Metaheuristic-optimized cross-modal attention networks for multimodal mental health assessment in college students.

The increase in mental health disorders in college populations necessitates novel assessment strategies that circumvent the limitations of existing self-report instruments. To address this issue, this paper presents a new deep learning framework for mental health monitoring in academia by integrating multimodal passive sensing data collected from smartphones. A cross-modal attention network, searched by a new metaheuristic algorithm the Addax Optimization Algorithm for neural architecture search, was trained and first evaluated on the StudentLife dataset. To further validate the results due to…

Mentorship across institutional contexts: Insights from biology and biomedical science undergraduates at two institutions.

Mentoring is essential for the development of biology and biomedical science (BBS) students, providing multiple benefits, including increased persistence in the STEM workforce. Although much of the literature on undergraduate mentoring focuses on mentorship in research experiences, there is a growing recognition that additional mentoring relationships can support BBS students, and that the institutional context can influence academic mentoring. Therefore, it is crucial to understand: 1) the mentoring relationships that undergraduate BBS students are engaging in, 2) where and through what sourc

Making the Case for Open Dental Education.

Dental education as a field and dentistry as a profession are facing significant challenges, including workforce shortages, ever-rising costs, unmet student and community needs, as well as quality of pedagogical practices. Open educational resources are learning objects that are freely accessible and are able to be retained, reused, revised, remixed, and redistributed under the philosophy of more openness and sharing. While some efforts are being made to address the aforementioned concerns, the prospects of more readily welcoming and adopting open education have not been discussed as a potenti

Distinct challenges faced by surgeons in conducting and publishing surgical research: implications for training, ethics, and academic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Surgical research is beset by a distinct set of challenges that differ meaningfully from those encountered in other medical disciplines. Despite surgeons' historic contributions to medical advancement, the proportion of surgeon-authored publications has declined relative to total medical literature output over the latter half of the twentieth century. This narrative review aims to comprehensively identify, categorise, and discuss the specific barriers surgeons face in conducting and publishing surgical research, with implications for surgical training, research ethics, and academic

The Challenges of Web Scraping and AI for Research Ethics in Canada: A Survey of University REBs.

With the increasing popularity of AI, it is critical to gain an understanding of how academic research ethics are impacted. Unfortunately, in Canada, the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans, or the TCPS2, lags far behind current technology when it comes to ethical research related to AI. We suspected that REBs at Canadian public universities are struggling to determine how the TCPS2 can or should be interpreted when it comes to AI research. To gauge these challenges, we conducted a survey of REB Chairs/Vice-Chairs and REO managers/supervisors. The result

Conceptual Understanding and Conceptual Change Through Human AI Collaboration in Science Education: An Integrated Conceptual Framework from a Systematic Literature Review.

Human Artificial Intelligence (Human AI) Collaboration in science education is gaining momentum and more research is required on how it can facilitate students' conceptual understanding and conceptual change. Currently, most studies on AI in science education investigate the use of one particular tool and its effects on learning. However, it is the learning mechanisms that are triggered by these tools that help develop knowledge. This systematic literature review was conducted by performing a systematic search within the Scopus database which was last updated on 15 June 2026. In line with the

What are we sharing? Faculty use of generative AI and the questions we have not yet asked in nursing education.

Generative AI has entered nursing education rapidly and pervasively. While considerable scholarly attention has been directed toward student use of these tools, including concerns about academic integrity, citation fabrication, and the design of AI-resistant assessments. Far less attention has been paid to faculty practice. Yet many of us now routinely use generative AI in the work of teaching itself: generating grading rubrics, simplifying assignment instructions, aligning course materials to program outcomes, drafting feedback on student work, and refining policy language. This practice has

The Typical Body Segment: An Anatomy Teaching Paradigm Created by Matt Cartmill and Others While Teaching Gross Anatomy at Duke University.

Within allied-health programs, gross anatomy is widely regarded as a foundational and content-dense course challenging instructors and students alike to manage an overwhelming volume of information within an increasingly constrained curriculum. In the late 1960's, the Duke University medical curriculum was redesigned to produce 'scientists-doctors' intensifying the instructional challenges of gross anatomy. In the wake of a series of unsuccessful experiments, comparative anatomists Matt Cartmill and James Shafland were recruited to develop and teach a medical gross anatomy course at Duke. Draw

Building and managing a complex drug discovery consortium: insights from the tuberculosis drug accelerator.

Developing tuberculosis drug regimens requires coordinated discovery of multiple, mechanistically distinct agents, which challenge traditional single-asset models. The Tuberculosis Drug Accelerator (TBDA) was established as a multi-organizational consortium to enable collaborative discovery across academia, industry and research institutions. Over more than a decade, the TBDA has demonstrated how such collaborations can align incentives, manage uncertainty and maintain portfolio discipline. This manuscript examines the operational and governance mechanisms that enable sustained collaboration. …

Moral injury and burnout among saudi educators under vision 2030: An interpretative phenomenological study of systemic ethical tensions.

Moral injury is a term that refers to the psychological and emotional impact of an individual's actions, or inactions, which violate their ethical standards and beliefs. This study examined how educators working at educational institutions in Saudi Arabia are experiencing both moral injury and burnout due to the increased reliance on standardized performance assessment and increased bureaucracy associated with the implementation of Vision 2030. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 educators representing a range of curriculum areas and locations throughout Saudi Arabia. Th
