A 12-year-old boy with the cervico-oculo-acoustic syndrome, which comprises Duane retraction syndrome, Klippel-Feil anomaly (fused cervical vertebrae) and congenital hearing loss, is described. To this classical triad an optic nerve head coloboma was associated. To the authors' knowledge this is the first case in which such an association has been recorded.

A 32-year-old patient is reported with two subarachnoid bleedings occurring at an interval of 5 years. The cause of bleeding was a richly vascularized neurinoma of the acoustic nerve with focal necrosis. Operation was successful.

Acoustic neurinomas comprise 8% of all primary intracranial neoplasms. The authors reviewed 100 cases of pathologically confirmed acoustic neurinomas and compared tumor size, based on observations at operation, with findings on history and physical examination. Of the 100 patients, 36 had a decreased corneal reflex, 36 had nystagmus, and 8 had papilledema. Several parameters of tinnitus were investigated in a group fo 102 subjects suffering from acoustic trauma. These parameters were then compared to the results of the hearing tests and subjective complaints. The frequency and intensity of tinnitus were established by the usual matching technique with a clinical audiometer. Acoustic reflex growth was measured as a function of activator bandwidth in 10 subjects with normal hearing and in 5 subjects with different configurations of sensorineural hearing loss. The activators consisted of tones with frequencies of 500, 1 000 and 4 000 Hz, fractions and multiples of octave bands centered at these frequencies, and broadband noise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of age on acoustic impedance values in the elderly. Pure tone, otoscopic, and impedance testing were conducted with subjects from 20 to 29, 60 to 69, and 70 to 79 years of age. Results revealed a slight, but nonsignificant, tendency for static compliance values to decrease with age, suggesting that the use of separate compliance norms for the elderly may not be warranted.
