Interdependence between the level of homocysteine and acute-phase proteins was assessed in patients presenting with a severe course of atherosclerosis. We examined a total of 67 patients aged 62.3 +/- 1.03 years. Of these, 34 patients had type 2 diabetes mellitus and 35 were non-diabetic. BACKGROUND: Serum retinol is the most commonly used indicator of vitamin A status. Retinol is transported in a 1-to-1 complex with retinol-binding protein (RBP). RBP is easy and inexpensive to measure, and studies have shown a high correlation between concentrations of RBP and concentrations of retinol. This study investigated the relationship between protein and energy intake during the early (days 1-2) and late (days 3-7) acute phase and prognosis in septic patients with nutritional risk screening 2002 ≥ 3.
