From Cognitive Restructuring to Spiritual Purification: A Theoretical Synthesis of the Transactional Model and Islamic Psychology.

BACKGROUND: In mental health nursing practice, the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping developed by Lazarus and Folkman is widely used as the primary framework for stress management. However, developments in the literature indicate that in conditions of severe stress and existential crisis, particularly when stressors are immutable, purely secular cognitive restructuring approaches may be complemented by incorporating spiritual dimensions. Conceptual studies on meaning-making emphasise that efforts to search for meaning that do not lead to resolution can instead develop into rumination an

Efficacy of combined naikan and morita therapies on psychological distress and posttraumatic growth in Chinese patients with advanced cancer: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Advanced cancer (AC) patients experience serious physical and psychological problems with the disease progression. When approaching the end of life, these patients have to cope with not only the bodily illness, but also the spiritual crisis. Conventional psychological treatments reduce distress to a certain extent, but for patients with AC, especially when they face progressive illness and are approaching death, their psychological problems are complex, and no simple solutions are in sight. Therefore, we designed this study to evaluate the efficacy of the combined Naikan therapy (N

Psychological State after an Acute Coronary Syndrome: Impact of Physical Limitations.

The aim of this study was to investigate how physical limitations after ACS influence patients' quality of life and health perception. This was a longitudinal clinical study. We recruited 146 patients diagnosed with ACS. The patients performed a stress test (Bruce's protocol) for the evaluation of physical limitations and were classified according to the test result: without physical limitations (more than 10 METS), with some physical limitations (7 to 9 METS), and with high physical limitations (less than 6 METS). Significant differences were found between the three groups immediately after t

Mapping psychological heterogeneity in military cadets: a multi-method framework combining network analysis, latent profiles, and risk nomograms.

INTRODUCTION: Military training imposes sustained psychological demands, yet cadet cohorts are typically treated as homogeneous, which obscures individual differences in distress, resilience, and adaptation. This study examined psychological adaptation and its heterogeneity across an initial training period. METHODS: Ninety-two cadets completed the DASS-21, the CD-RISC-25, and personality measures on three occasions spanning five months. A multi-method framework combined four complementary analyses: longitudinal measurement invariance testing through confirmatory factor analysis and Tucker's

Psychosocial reactions to upper extremity limb salvage: A cross-sectional study.

STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional survey study. INTRODUCTION: Limb salvage spares an extremity at risk for amputation after a major traumatic injury. Psychosocial recovery for individuals with lower extremity limb salvage has been discussed in the literature. However, to date, psychosocial reactions for individuals with upper extremity (UE) limb salvage have not been examined. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To determine which factors may influence psychosocial adaptation to UE limb salvage. METHODS: Participants (n = 30; 28 males) were adults (mean, 30.13; range, 18-61) who sustained an UE l

Understanding post-surgical recovery in vestibular schwannoma: A qualitative exploration of patient experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a benign tumor of the vestibulocochlear nerve, often causing hearing loss, balance disturbances, and psychosocial challenges. While surgical resection is standard, the long-term biopsychosocial impact of surgery is poorly understood. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the physical, psychological, and social challenges experienced by patients up to five years after VS surgery? MATERIAL AND METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured video call interviews with 12 patients recruited via a patient advocacy group. Interviews explored posto

Psychological resilience as a behavioral proxy for cognitive reserve in multiple sclerosis: A theoretical reappraisal.

Psychological resilience has emerged as a robust protective factor in multiple sclerosis (MS), consistently associated with reduced depression, lower fear of relapse, and improved health-related quality of life. However, resilience in MS has been predominantly conceptualized as an intrapersonal psychological trait, limiting its explanatory scope for cognitive and neurological outcomes. In this theoretical manuscript, we propose reconceptualizing psychological resilience as a dynamic behavioral-psychological system that may function as a behavioral proxy for cognitive reserve. This proposal is

Conceptualizing and measuring psychological resilience in the context of physical limitations in later life: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological resilience may support adaptation to physical limitations, but definitions and measures vary. This scoping review examined how psychological resilience has been conceptualized and measured among older adults, focusing on studies addressing physical limitations or functioning. It also synthesized factors and outcomes associated with resilience. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were searched for English-language studies published between 2005 and 2025. Reporting followed PRISMA-ScR, and 17 studies met inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Although resilienc

A Transdiagnostic Approach in Psychodiagnosis: The Romanian Adaptation of the Process-Based Assessment Tool (PBAT).

BACKGROUND: Recent research has focused on psychological constructs that maintain psychopathology, along with the constraints of single-diagnosis protocols that have contributed to the expansion of process-based psychotherapy. Therefore, the Process-Based Assessment Tool (PBAT) was developed for identifying relevant psychological processes and facilitating personalized approaches. The aim of the present study was the adaptation of the PBAT for the Romanian population. METHODS: Participants (n = 637) encompassed a non-clinical and a clinical sample who filled in the PBAT. In addition, within t

Spiritual confusion in the era of artificial intelligence: a psychology of religion perspective.

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) presents unprecedented challenges to traditional religious understanding and practice, especially in terms of religious experience and psychological behavioural patterns. This study examines the various dimensions of spiritual confusion arising from AI integration across diverse religious traditions, employing a psychology of religion framework alongside Western and Eastern philosophical spectrums, enriched by psychobiographical analyses of religious practitioners' developmental trajectories in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), with

The psychological effects of cardiac rehabilitation after coronary revascularization.

OBJECTIVE: Prevalence of depression and anxiety increases following cardiac revascularization. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a cardiac rehabilitation program on psychological status of patients after cardiac revascularization. METHODS: A total of 120 patients who underwent either coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were enrolled in an 8-week rehabilitation program. A brief mood survey was administered before the program and repeated following its completion. Psychological state was assessed for depression, anxiety, panic sym

A Generative, Homeostatic Account of Psychological Experience: Reinterpreting Resilience, Distress, and Recovery Across the Lifespan.

Research across developmental and lifespan psychology has identified a recurring pattern in psychological well-being: relatively high emotional flexibility in early childhood, increased vulnerability to distress across adolescence and midlife, and partial improvement in later adulthood. Prevailing explanations typically attribute these shifts to the acquisition, calibration, and eventual decline of regulatory capacities and psychosocial resources. This paper proposes an alternative, integrative account grounded in a generative, homeostatic framework of psychological experience. Within this per

Treatment decisions for patients and end-stage renal disease: psychological considerations.

Consideration of psychological factors can lead to more informed treatment decisions and more successful medical management of patients with end-stage renal disease. Several criteria are specified as a useful guide. The psychological issues of dependence-independence, activity-passivity, and control and mastery are frequently referred to in the literature as being important in understanding the chronic stress of illness and treatment. Treatment planning should be tailored, if possible, to the psychological needs of the patient, the family and the staff. The process of adaptation to chronic dia

AI-assisted and Big-Unit teaching enhance speed-skating performance through psychological mechanisms in adolescents: evidence from a three-arm intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Innovative instructional approaches are increasingly advocated in physical education to enhance both motor skill development and psychological adaptation. However, few studies have directly compared micro-level (AI-assisted) and macro-level (Big-Unit) teaching models, or examined the psychological mechanisms underlying performance improvements in adolescent winter-sport environments. METHODS: A three-arm, quasi-experimental longitudinal study was conducted with 129 first-year middle school students (AI-assisted: n = 42; Big-Unit: n = 43; Conventional: n = 44). Participants complet

Post-Traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth in firefighters: examining the moderating effects of resilience on occupational safety behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) represent divergent outcomes following trauma exposure in high-risk professions. This investigation examined the complex interplay between PTSD, PTG, and resilience in relation to occupational safety behaviors among Turkish firefighters. METHODS: A multi-site cross-sectional study was conducted across five metropolitan fire departments in Turkey (N = 122). Participants completed validated psychometric instruments including the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), Posttraumatic Growth Inventory-Expanded Form (PTGI-X),

Positive Constructs in Schema Therapy: A Scoping Review.

Central to the schema therapy model is the development of early maladaptive schemas due to unmet emotional needs in childhood. Recently, focus has shifted towards positive constructs in schema therapy, including early adaptive schemas or positive schemas and positive schema modes, such as the "healthy adult" and "happy child." This scoping review explores theoretical perspectives, assessment, and therapeutic use of these positive constructs in schema therapy. The PRISMA-ScR methodology was followed, using predefined search terms and databases (OVID, EBSCO, Mednar). After identifying 345 studie
