Plasma galanin, vasopressin, and oxytocin in patients with Addison's disease.

Galanin is colocalized with adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) in the human pituitary and with corticotrophin releasing hormone, arginine, vasopressin, and oxytocin in the hypothalamus. Galanin, vasopressin, and oxytocin influence the secretion of pituitary ACTH. The aim of this study was to investigate if the endogenous stimulation of ACTH release in Addison's disease was reflected in plasma galanin, vasopressin, and oxytocin. ACTH, galanin, vasopressin, and oxytocin were measured in plasma from 14 patients with Addison's disease, one patient with Nelson's syndrome, and 14 healthy controls. Eight pa

Addison's disease and the regulation of potassium: the role of insulin and aldosterone.

It is proposed that insulin has a cardinal role in the regulation of serum potassium levels in man, which may be of greater importance than the effect of insulin on glucose metabolism. Although the first described action of insulin was on glucose transport, it is a hormone with many functions some of which may operate in a metabolic hierarchy depending on the relative importance of the action required. Insulin also promotes the transport of potassium ions from the extracellular space to the intracellular space and it is suggested that there are occasions where this action may take place at the

Tuberculous epididymitis presenting with Addison's disease: a rare case.

This report describes a case of tuberculosis with an atypical presentation characterized by epididymitis and Addison's disease in the absence of lung involvement. A 54-year-old male who presented with acute right scrotal pain and a whitish discharge, had been diagnosed four months earlier with acute epididymitis and prescribed ciprofloxacin. The clinical diagnosis was epididymitis and Addison's disease. Hydrocortisone therapy was initiated, and bilateral epididymectomy was undertaken. Biopsy specimen showed the presence of acid-fast bacilli and antituberculous treatment was initiated. On follo

[A case of Addison's disease presented with depression as a first symptom].

This report describes a 52-year-old male patient with idiopathic Addison's disease presenting depression as a first symptom. His psychomotor inhibition, depressive mood, sleep disturbances, general fatigue, muscular pain, and arthralgia were considered to be due to intense work in a stressful environment. Neither his physician nor his orthopedist found any physical disease. Therefore, he was diagnosed with endogenous depression by a psychiatric clinic, and antidepressants were prescribed. Antidepressants were not sufficient for improving his symptoms, and he was admitted to our hospital. Endoc

Clinical significance of adrenal computed tomography in Addison's disease.

Adrenal computed tomographic (CT) scanning was conducted in twelve patients with Addison's disease during the clinical course. In tuberculous Addison's disease (n = 8), three of four patients examined during the first two years after disease onset had bilaterally enlarged adrenals, while one of four had a unilaterally enlarged one. At least one adrenal gland was enlarged after onset in all six patients examined during the first four years. Thereafter, the adrenal glands may atrophy bilaterally, in contrast to adrenal glands in idiopathic Addison's disease, which atrophy bilaterally from diseas

[Radioimmunologic determination of pituitary autoantibodies in patients with Addison's disease].

The occurrence of pituitary autoantibodies was investigated in 34 patients, 25 females and 9 males, with Addison's disease of autoimmune origin and in 10 patients with tuberculous etiology of the disease. In both groups adrenal autoantibodies were also determined. Autoantibodies were determined by radioimmunoassay using solid phase technique in tubes coated with proteins of human adrenal and pituitary microsomal fractions. Pituitary autoantibodies were detected in 28 of 34 patients (20 females and 8 males) with autoimmune Addison's disease but only in 3 patients (2 females and one male) with n

Addison's disease secondary to prostatic carcinoma. A case report.

Adrenal cortical insufficiency secondary to destruction of the cortex by a metastatic tumor is a rare condition. Addison's disease is usually caused by an autoimmune process or by a tuberculous infection. We report a case of adrenal insufficiency as the first clinical manifestation of a metastatic prostate carcinoma that occurred simultaneously with an active pulmonary infection by M. tuberculosis.

Clinical presentation, growth, and pubertal development in Addison's disease.

The clinical course of eight boys and six girls with Addison's disease has been reviewed. Adrenal antibodies were found in five boys and five girls, and four children showed clinical evidence of other autoimmune disease (hypoparathyroidism (three); diabetes (one)). The presentation was insidious in 12 children but acute in two. On treatment, linear growth was normal and, with the exception of one girl with theca cell antibodies, pubertal development proceeded normally in the older patients.

Addison's disease associated with precocious sexual development in a boy.

An eleven-year-old boy was diagnosed to have Addison's disease with an ACTH level of over 4500 pg/ml after a short episode of fever and dehydration. From the age of 6 years his skin and buccal mucosa had been hyperpigmented but there were no other subjective complaints. The clinical examination also revealed signs of advanced puberty for his age (3rd--4th stage according to Tanner's criteria), with advanced bone age (13 years). The elevated levels of plasma testosterone and gonadotropins and their response to LH-RH stimulation were appropriate for his clinical stage of puberty and supported th

Rare occurrence of Addison's disease and diabetes mellitus in children.

We report on two children with both Addison's disease and diabetes mellitus, a rare occurrence in children. One of the children first developed Addison's disease and later developed diabetes mellitus, while the other had the onset of diabetes mellitus first and later Addison's disease. In the latter patient a direct relationship was shown between the insulin dose and adrenal cortical hormone. Organ-specific antibody studies are reported and the diagnosis and management of these combined endocrinopathies are discussed.
