Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is an effective treatment of lupus erythematosus. Although adverse effects, mainly gastrointestinal and cutaneous manifestations, are rare, they may result in the cessation of medication in some patients with severe reactions. Therefore, the evaluation of a patient's condition is important for a dermatologist to decide whether to cease or continue HCQ. We herein report a case of a 36-year-old Japanese woman with systemic lupus erythematosus and cutaneous eruptions caused by the p.o. administration of HCQ. Because she wanted to continue the medication and had only mild

The prevalence of cutaneous adverse events attributable to newly approved anti-cancer drugs has been well reviewed in the dermatologic literature. In contrast, over 75% of US Food and Drug Administration approvals in the past 5 years have been for non-cancer drugs and indications. This represents multiple other categories of approved medications associated with cutaneous adverse reactions. To investigate the cutaneous adverse events associated with these potentially neglected medications, a systematic review was conducted. Two hundred and forty-one medications approved by the Food and Drug Adm

Palmoplantar pustulosis is a variant of psoriasis and a chronic skin disorder in which pruritic pustular eruptions appear on the palms and soles. It is thought to arise from a variety of genetic and environmental factors, is limited in prevalence, and has proven quite difficult to treat. The symptoms it inflicts on those affected are quite debilitating and the treatment landscape is constantly evolving, thus emphasizing the need for updates of the literature as time passes. Current treatments include topical agents, oral therapies, and phototherapy, amongst other treatments. In this systemic r

BACKGROUND: As a keratolytic, salicylic acid (SA) can be topically applied in various formulations and doses in dermatology. Supramolecular SA hydrogel, a new SA formulation with higher bioavailability, is developed and commercially available nowadays. However, there still remain concerns that the long-term and continual application of SA at low concentrations may jeopardize the cutaneous barrier properties.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To reveal the long-term effects of 0.5-5% supramolecular SA hydrogel on the skin barrier in normal mice models.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 5% supramol

BACKGROUND: Scabies is globally ubiquitous and is a significant health issue for institutions, the economically disenfranchised, resource-poor areas, and for those with weakened immune systems. Topicals are usually effective, but are cumbersome and expensive to use in large populations and for those nonadherent to topicals. Oral ivermectin became available in Canada for the off-label treatment of scabies in the fall 2018.
OBJECTIVES: To review the diagnosis and management of scabies. Dose schedules and concomitant management measures are outlined for scabies simplex and for crusted scabies. I

Diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis (DCM) is a rare, severe, variant of cutaneous mastocytosis. The authors report the case of a male infant who developed maculae and maculopapulae on his legs and abdomen when aged 3.5 months, which spread to all body surfaces within weeks. Diagnosis of DCM was made at the age of 6 months when he had developed extensive bullous eruptions, generalised pruritus, flushing and abdominal pain. Treatment was started with oral dimethindine maleate. At the age of 18 months, oral sodium cromoglicate (SCG) was introduced. At the age of 23 months, additional treatment was sta

Mold onychomycosis often can be clinically suspected because of the presence of periungual inflammation. Treatment with systemic antifungals is very effective in onychomycosis caused by Aspergillus sp. Scopulariopsis brevicaulis and Fusarium sp. infection are difficult to eradicate and treatment with systemic antifungals should always be associated with topical treatment with nail lacquers. Candida onychomycosis is always a sign of immunodepression. Systemic treatment with itraconazole or fluconazole is usually effective, but relapses are very common.

A 5-month old female domestic shorthair cat developed lethargy and severe ulcerative skin lesions that covered more than half of its body after routine administration of rabies vaccine, anthelmintic, and ear medication. Clinical and histologic findings were consistent with a severe cutaneous drug reaction or erythema multiforme. The cat's condition continued to deteriorate despite drug withdrawal and supportive care. Administration of human intravenous immunoglobulin was well tolerated by the cat and led to rapid resolution of ulcerative cutaneous lesions, accompanied by substantial improvemen

Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is a multifactorial disease whose treatment still presents challenges: the rapid progression to advanced CM, which leads to frequent recurrences even after surgical excision and, notably, the low response rates and resistance to the available therapies, particularly in the case of unresectable metastatic CM. Thereby, alternative innovative therapeutic approaches for CM continue to be searched. In this review we discuss relevant preclinical research studies, and provide a broad-brush analysis of patents and clinical trials which involve the application of nanotechnology-

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease transmitted by an obligate intra-macrophage protozoan of the genus Leishmania through the infective bite of a vector sandfly. This study investigated the therapeutic efficacy of farnesol, a sesquiterpene compound, for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) using in vivo BALB/c mouse model. In this study, farnesol's efficacy was compared with the standard drug, paromomycin. It was observed that farnesol significantly reduced lesion sizes and footpad thickness compared to the control group (paromomycin). Lymph node size was also significantly reduced in

Parenteral pentavalent antimonials remain the standard therapy for cutaneous leishmaniasis. More effective and patient-compliant topical treatments are an important alternative treatment for the localized self-limiting forms of this disease. Two paromomycin ointments are commercially available but their use is limited by either toxicity or lack of efficacy. Other topical formulations have been in clinical trials, but many results have been equivocal and no major breakthroughs have been achieved. The focus of this review is on recent developments in the field of topical treatment for cutaneous

BACKGROUND: Topical minoxidil, approved for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, also has efficacy in many other hair loss disorders, its use is limited due to the need for at least daily application. Oral minoxidil, in doses below those likely to lower blood pressure (so called "low dose oral minoxidil") has increasingly been used off label to treat a variety of hair loss conditions but without any standard recommended best practices.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a review of how experts in hair loss use the available literature on topical and low dose oral minoxidil to educate and treat safely

The authors report a rare case of primary cutaneous mucormycosis caused by Mucor irregularis and cutaneous Klebsiella pneumoniae infections in a 67-year-old Chinese woman. After the administration of liposomal amphotericin B combined with cefoperazone/sulbactam sodium, the patient recovered. Invasive fungal infection combined with cutaneous bacterial infection should receive attention.

Cannabidiol (CBD), one of the main actives from Cannabis sativa has been perpetually explored lately for its therapeutic effects. Its main attributes, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, snowball into pain management, epilepsy and seizure alleviation, anxiety relief, as well as numerous other implications through the entire metabolism. However, conventional administration routes challenge its therapeutic potential, with reported poor water solubility, hepatic degradation, gastric instability and erratic bioavailability observed in oral administration. As a result, the transderma

Psoriasis is a condition of the skin which involves scales, dry patches, and inflammation. Methotrexate (logP: -1.8, MW:454.44 g/mol) is administered orally or intravenously to treat psoriasis. The first-pass metabolism and systemic toxicity can be avoided by administration via skin. Topical and transdermal delivery of methotrexate using iontophoresis and microneedles, alone and in combination was investigated using full-thickness healthy human skin. It is also equally relevant to evaluate the delivery into and across damaged/diseased skin. Hence, this study investigated the delivery of methot
