Factors related to length of stay, referral on discharge and hospital readmission for children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined factors related to hospital length of stay (LOS), reported referral on discharge, and hospital readmission, for children and adolescents (C&A) admitted to public hospitals for anorexia nervosa (AN), in a large health jurisdiction in Australia. METHOD: Sociodemographic, illness, treatment, and hospital factors associated with LOS, reported referral to post-hospital treatment, and readmission within 28 days were analyzed for C&A with AN admitted to all New South Wales public hospitals in 2017, using median, multinomial logit and logit models. The sample comprised

Desired weight and treatment outcome among adolescents in a novel family-based partial hospitalization program.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate desired weight percentage and weight difference percentage and their association with treatment outcome in a novel family-based partial hospitalization program. Twenty-six adolescents with anorexia nervosa or subthreshold anorexia nervosa between the ages of 12 and 19 completed the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) at intake and upon completion from a partial hospitalization program in which parents played a large role in the recovery process, consistent with family-based treatment principles. Lower desired weight percentage at baseline was a

Suicide Ideation in Adolescents Following Inpatient Hospitalization: Examination of Intensity and Lability Over 6 Months.

Understanding suicide ideation (SI) in adolescents, especially during the high-risk time following hospitalization for a suicidal event, is a crucial component of improving risk assessment. Most studies rely on single assessments of SI, despite the potential for SI to vary considerably over time. This study examined how indices of SI intensity (mean values) and lability (mean squared successive difference values) over a 6-month period predict suicide attempts (SAs) and self-harm, as well as how they relate to psychosocial risk factors and affective functioning, in a sample of 103 adolescents h

Hospital admissions for skin infections among Western Australian children and adolescents from 1996 to 2012.

The objective of this study was to describe the occurrence of skin infection associated hospitalizations in children born in Western Australia (WA). We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all children born in WA between 1996 and 2012 (n = 469,589). Of these, 31,348 (6.7%) were Aboriginal and 240,237 (51.2%) were boys. We report the annual age-specific hospital admission rates by geographical location and diagnostic category. We applied log-linear regression modelling to analyse changes in temporal trends of hospitalizations. Hospitalization rates for skin infections in Aboriginal childre

[Interferon-gamma release assays for hospital-based tuberculosis diagnostics in children and adolescents--a retrospective analysis].

OBJECTIVE: Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) are well established for diagnosing latent tuberculosis infection in adults. Evidence for their diagnostic relevance in children is still insufficient. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of IGRA compared to the tuberculin skin test (TST) in a local population of children and adolescents presenting to our lung clinic with a specialised outpatient department. METHODS: Records from all patients evaluated for tuberculosis at our centre between 2009 and 2011 were analysed retrospectively. Complete data sets were a

Pneumatic ureterolithotripsy in paediatric and adolescent patients: a ten-year experience at the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION: Two to three percent of stone disease cases occur in the paediatric age group. It is common in some parts of the world, such as in Turkey, India and Thailand. More than 50 percent of stones in children are still managed through open surgery. Ureteroscopic intervention for children remains a challenging treatment option. However, in contemporary urology practice, this mode of intervention is becoming more common. In this retrospective study, we reviewed our experiences with ureteroscopy and pneumatic lithotripsy in the paediatric and adolescent age group. METHODS: A total of 13 p

Neurochemical effects of olanzapine in first-hospitalization manic adolescents: a proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) to compare the in vivo effects of olanzapine on prefrontal N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) levels in treatment remitters and nonremitters. Secondary aims of this study were to identify neurochemical predictors of successful olanzapine treatment and other neurochemical effects of olanzapine. In all, 20 adolescents admitted for their first hospitalization for bipolar disorder, type I, manic or mixed and 10 demographically matched healthy subjects were recruited. Manic adolescents were treated with olanzapine monotherapy and scanned at three time p

[Anemia and growth in Congolese adolescents with homozygous sickle cell anemia at Central University Hospital of Brazzaville].

The rate of hemoglobin of 71 homozygous sickle cell disease patients from 10 to 18 years was studied, as well as the mean cell volume for 61 of them. Their height, weight and bone age were compared. The rate of hemoglobin in steady state is 6.5 g/dl +/- 2.3 for girls against 7.9 g/dl +/- 1.5 for boys. There's no significant difference between the rate of hemoglobin on sexual maturation state for girls. But the boys from 14 to 18 years old with signs of sexual maturation had higher rate of hemoglobin than those had not (8.5 g/dl +/- 1.3 against 6.3 g/dl +/- 1.5). Eighteen per cent of patients w

Music listening preferences and preadmission dysfunctional psychosocial behaviors of adolescents hospitalized on an in-patient psychiatric unit.

This study investigated the relationship between music listening preferences and preadmission, dysfunctional psychosocial behaviors (PDPB) of 60 adolescents who were hospitalized on an in-patient psychiatric unit. Findings were that hospitalized adolescents who primarily listened to music with negative lyrics/themes had a history of more PDPB than hospitalized adolescents who primarily listened to music that did not contain negative lyrics/themes; and hospitalized adolescents who primarily listened to heavy metal music had a history of more PDPB than hospitalized adolescents who primarily list

Sexually abused adolescents: a distinct group among sexually abused children presenting to a children's hospital.

Case records were retrospectively reviewed for 40 adolescents presenting to a paediatric sexual abuse service with a history of acute (23 cases) or chronic (17 cases) abuse. The chronic cases disclosed the abuse to a family member, the abuse was intrafamilial, and they had similarities to the chronically abused younger child. The acute cases disclosed the abuse outside the family, and were abused by strangers or acquaintances. Some acutely abused adolescents had similarities to child victims of stranger assault; however a larger sub-group was identified (14 of 23; 35% of total) whose indescrim

An assessment of the effectiveness of hydroxyurea therapy in children and adolescents with sickle cell anaemia at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is a major public health concern in Kenya, particularly affecting children and adolescents. Despite the inclusion of hydroxyurea in national treatment guidelines, its real-world use and effectiveness in Kenya remain under-documented, especially in tertiary care settings such as Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). The drug is known to reduce vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs), transfusions, and hospitalizations, but its impact in resource-limited environments requires further investigation. Hence, this study aimed to assess the clinical and hematological effectiveness of hydro

Characteristics of adolescents hospitalised in adult psychiatric units. Retrospective study in the largest psychiatric hospital in France.

Although psychiatrists working with adolescents know that sometimes they need to be hospitalised in emergency, few studies have described the hospitalisation of adolescents in adult psychiatric wards. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of adolescents hospitalised in adult psychiatric wards (characteristics, gender comparison, subtypes). We conducted a monocentric retrospective study in the largest psychiatric hospital in France. All patients aged 15 to <18 years hospitalised in adult psychiatric wards were included, with different variables: socio-demographic and family information, history o

Adolescent, Parent and Clinician Perspectives on Time Alone in Chronic Illness Visits at a Single Children's Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Time alone between adolescents with chronic illnesses and their clinicians may contribute to patient-centred care and transition readiness within this population. Shifts in the adolescent-parent-clinician relationship underpin this contribution; as such, this qualitative study explored adolescent, parent and clinician perspectives on time alone in routine visits for paediatric chronic illness. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with English-speaking adolescents (ages 12-17, n = 65) and their parents (n = 63) were conducted after follow-up visits for inflammatory bowel disease (IB

Mental Health Hospitalizations in Canadian Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults Over the COVID-19 Pandemic.

IMPORTANCE: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in multiple socially restrictive public health measures and reported negative mental health impacts in youths. Few studies have evaluated incidence rates by sex, region, and social determinants across an entire population. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of hospitalizations for mental health conditions, stratified by sex, region, and social determinants, in children and adolescents (hereinafter referred to as youths) and young adults comparing the prepandemic and pandemic-prevalent periods. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This Canadian popul
