Online support seeking, co-rumination, and mental health in adolescent girls.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents frequently use informal support seeking to cope with stress and worries. Past research in face-to-face contexts has shown that the relationship between informal support seeking and mental health is influenced by the specific strategy used and the mode through which support is sought. To date, little research has considered the relationship between support seeking online and adolescent mental health. METHODS: In this study, structural equation modeling (SEM) examined the mediating role of co-rumination in the relationships between seeking support from friends or onlin

Female reproductive health in pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancer survivors.

An estimated 500,000 cancer survivors of reproductive age in the United States will live to experience the long-term consequences of cancer treatment. Therefore, a focused aspect of cancer care has appropriately shifted to include quality of life in survivorship. Infertility is a late effect of therapy that affects 12% of female survivors of childhood cancer receiving any cancer treatment in large cohort studies and results in a 40% decreased likelihood of pregnancy in young adults of ages 18-39 years. Nonfertility gynecologic late effects such as hypoestrogenism, radiation-induced uterine and

The Sexual Health Needs of Adolescent Boys Involved in a Pregnancy.

PURPOSE: Little is known about fatherhood in middle adolescence. To better understand their sexual health needs, we describe relationship characteristics, perception of masculinity, and associated sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk behaviors in a community-based sample of urban middle adolescent boys who have fathered a child or been involved with a pregnancy. METHODS: We used venue-based sampling to recruit 339 boys (aged 14-17 years) in neighborhoods with high STI prevalence. We administered a brief survey on sexual relationship and pregnancy history, STI risk, juvenile justice invol

External-environmental and internal-health early life predictors of adolescent development.

A wealth of evidence documents associations between various aspects of the rearing environment and later development. Two evolutionary-inspired models advance explanations for why and how such early experiences shape later functioning: (a) the external-prediction model, which highlights the role of the early environment (e.g., parenting) in regulating children's development, and (b) the internal-prediction model, which emphasizes internal state (i.e., health) as the critical regulator. Thus, by using data from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, the current project draws

Managing adolescent behavioural and mental health problems in the Emergency Department.

Children and young people with behavioural issues frequently present to Emergency Departments. These are complex cases, often with a long preceding history. Caring for them requires a structured approach to ensure safety for the patient and all those involved. The HEADSS assessment is used as a framework. The Emergency Department focuses on treatment of the acute behavioural issues in the least restrictive manner possible. Ongoing behavioural issues are managed with referral to community and specialist resources.

Food Insecurity and Rural Adolescent Personal Health, Home, and Academic Environments.

BACKGROUND: Food-insecure (FIS) adolescents struggle in school and with health and mental health more often than food-secure (FS) adolescents. Rural communities experience important disparities in health, but little is known about rural FIS adolescents. This study aims to describe select characteristics of rural adolescents by food-security status. METHODS: Baseline analysis using data from a randomized trial to increase school breakfast participation (SBP) in rural Minnesota high schools. Students completed a survey regarding food security, characteristics, and home and school environments.

History of dating violence and the association with late adolescent health.

BACKGROUND: The present investigation expands upon prior studies by examining the relationship between health in late adolescence and the experience of physical/sexual and non-physical dating violence victimization, including dating violence types that are relevant to today's adolescents (e.g., harassment via email and text messaging). We examined the relationship between physical/sexual and non-physical dating violence victimization from age 13 to 19 and health in late adolescence/early adulthood. METHODS: The sample comprised 585 subjects (ages 18 to 21; mean age, 19.8, SD = 1.0) recruited

Smoking, substance use, and mental health correlates in urban adolescent girls.

This study examined the associations among smoking tobacco and/or cannabis with alcohol use, depression, disordered eating and healthy behaviors among adolescent girls enrolled in an HIV prevention intervention randomized trial. Baseline self-reported behaviors from 744 sexually active, low-income, urban participants were collected using an audio computer assisted self interview. Girls ranged in age from 15 to 19 years old with a mean age of 16.5. Over 16% of girls reported smoking cigarettes, 41% smoked cannabis and 12% used both substances. Girls who smoked either substance had higher scores

Trends in adolescent and young adult health in the United States.

This review presents a national health profile of adolescents and young adults (ages 10-24). The data presented include trends on demographics, mortality, health-related behaviors, and healthcare access and utilization, as well as the most significant gender and racial/ethnic disparities. Although the data show some improvement, many concerns remain. Encouraging trends-such as decreases in rates of homicide, suicide, and some measures of reproductive health-appear to be leveling off or, in some cases, reversing (e.g., birth and gonorrhea rates). Large disparities, particularly by race/ethnicit

Controversies in male adolescent health: varicocele, circumcision, and testicular self-examination.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The authors review three common clinical controversies encountered by primary care providers of adolescent males: management of varicoceles, the role of circumcision in the acquisition and transmission of sexually transmitted infections, and the value of teaching testicular self-examination. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings in adolescent varicoceles have advanced knowledge regarding the cause of varicoceles, the mechanism by which they may lead to infertility, new screening methods, and optimal surgical management. Accumulating evidence shows circumcision to be protective a

Changing patterns of adolescent sexual behavior: consequences for health and development.

Sexuality is a fundamental quality of human life, important for health, happiness, individual development, and indeed for the preservation of the human race. During the dynamic period of adolescence in which the passage from childhood to maturity takes place, sexuality takes on new dimensions; feelings become more intense, relationships become more complex, and the consequences of sexual behavior are radically altered. This not only affects the behavior of young people but also of those who interact with them, their families and peers, and those who work in the health, education, youth, social

Health, developmental, and nutritional status of adolescent alcohol and marijuana abusers.

The impact of alcohol and marijuana abuse on the physical health and nutritional status of adolescents has not been well documented. The health consequences of alcoholism and chemical abuse in adults may not relate to the pediatric population. Forty-nine adolescent boys (mean age 15.8 years) with varying degrees of alcohol and marijuana use by self-report were evaluated as to their general health, pubertal development and nutritional status using health and dietary history, physical examination, anthropometrics, and biochemical assays of liver function and tissue nutrients. Thirteen (27%) were

Adolescents and cannabis in the 21st century: Current Problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Health Care.

The past 30 years in the United States have seen a shift towards increasing decriminalization and legalization of cannabis products. Despite the evolving legal landscape, adolescent cannabis use appears to have remained relatively stable, while use among young adults has increased. Cannabis-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and unintentional ingestions, particularly among young children, have all increased, with the availability of higher potency products such as concentrates and edibles likely playing a role. Cannabis intoxication should be suspected in youth presenting w
