The efficacy of albendazole (15 mg/kg/d for 1 week) was compared with praziquantel (100 mg/kg in three divided doses at 2-hour intervals) for therapy of parenchymal brain cysticercosis. Ten patients were treated with albendazole and 10 patients with praziquantel. Although the total number of cysts was significantly reduced from 64 to 7 in patients treated with albendazole and from 59 to 24 in those treated with praziquantel, the number of patients improving with albendazole was not significantly different from those treated with praziquantel.

Alveolar hydatid disease occurs frequently in Xiji County of Ningxia. 80 cases of the disease were treated orally with albendazole from 1985 to 1988 and the short-term results proved satisfactory. The treatment consisted of two groups. A patient with primary multiple cerebral hydatid cysts was treated with albendazole. The daily dose was 10 mg/kg, taken 3 times a day with main meals, in 4 one-month courses separated by intervals of 15 days. Computerized tomography did not reveal any cerebral cysts at the end of therapy; complete calcification was observed at the sites of previous cysts 12 months later. Albendazole was very well tolerated. The results of therapy suggest that albendazole is a valuable contribution to the treatment of cerebral hydatid cysts.

Thirty-two patients with cysts caused by Echinococcus granulosus were treated with albendazole in a dosage of 10 mg/kg/day. Reversible abnormalities in liver-cell function tests were seen in five patients. A comparative study was performed for the treatment of gnathostomiasis patients with ivermectin 0.2 mg/kg for 2 days in 15 patients vs albendazole 400 mg twice daily for 21 days in 14 patients.
