CO2-DBU-Triggered Photoredox-Catalyzed Direct α-C-H Alkylation of Alcohols.

An efficient photoinduced and metal-free method for direct α-C-H monoalkylation of alcohols utilizing the CO2-DBU-system as a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) catalyst in the presence of water (H2O) is reported. This protocol allows for selective functionalization of alcohols with a broad substrate scope, demonstrating yields up to 88% in 36 examples. Systematic computational analysis using DFT calculations reveals insights into the mechanism by identifying the key intermediates assembled via intermolecular hydrogen bond between DBU-CO2 adduct and alcohol. This strategy opens new avenues for effic…

pKa of alcohols dictates their reactivity with reduced uranium-substituted thiomolybdate clusters.

The uranium-substituted thiomolybdate cluster, (Cp*3Mo3S4)UCp*, has been demonstrated as a model for water reduction by single uranium atoms supported on a molybdenum sulfide surface (U@MoS2). In this study, the scope of O-H bond activation is expanded through the investigation of the reactivity of various alcohols with differing pKa values for the -OH proton. The reaction of (Cp*3Mo3S4)UCp* with stoichiometric amounts of methanol, phenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, and nonafluoro-tert-butyl alcohol affords the corresponding mono-alkoxide species, (Cp*3Mo3S4)Cp*U(OR), via a uranium-metalloligand coop…

Activating Molybdenum Peroxide Scissors for Converting Polyamide Plastic into Low Carbon Alcohols.

Direct chemical conversion of plastic waste into low-carbon oxygenates, rather than carbon dioxide, with renewable energy, is important yet challenging. Due to high C─X (X═C, H, N) bond energy, fully optimized catalysts are required to enable precise bond cleavage for boosted efficiency and selectivity. Here, adaptable and recyclable molybdenum peroxide photocatalysts that demonstrate chemical scissors for the selective conversion of polyamide to alcohols are reported. It shows that dimensionally adaptable Mo(+5.8)-(O2) is activated via a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) process for loca…

PNP-Mn(I) Catalyzed Base Free N-Alkylation of Amines Using Alcohols.

We report a Mn(I) pincer complex, [Mn(CO)3{o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(C6H4PPh2-o)}κ3-P,N,P], bearing an amide-functionalized bisphosphine (BalaHariPhos), for the efficient N-alkylation of amines with alcohols. The reaction proceeds under base-free conditions at 80 °C, affording N-alkylated products in good to excellent yields within 12 h. Broad substrate scope is demonstrated, including the synthesis of indoles and dibenzyl piperazine. Selective mono-N-methylation of amines using methanol as a C1 source was also achieved. This work establishes a sustainable, non-noble metal platform for amine functionali…

Bio-inspired manganese-catalyzed deaminative hydroxylation of benzyl amines to corresponding alcohols.

Direct conversion of amines to corresponding alcohols is challenging even under harsh reaction conditions. Inspired by enzymatic transamination, we present a transamination borrowing-hydrogen strategy that enables the direct and selective Mn-catalyzed deaminative hydroxylation of benzylamines, affording a broad scope (>30 examples) of alcohols in good yields at low catalyst loadings (down to 0.05 mol%). Notably, methanol serves a dual role as hydrogen donor and amino acceptor, rather than a conventional role as a methylating agent. Mechanistic investigations reveal base plays a pivotal role in…

Dehydrogenation of Aromatic Alcohols, Aldehydes, and Ketones Catalyzed by Cu(I) Complexes.

Herein, we report that binuclear copper complexes used as dehydrogenative catalysts, combined with oxygen as an oxidant and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxide (TEMPO) as an additive, are capable of effectively catalyzing the successive dehydrogenation of aromatic propanols to produce α,β-unsaturated aldehydes. This method has the advantages of high efficiency, simple operation, and oxygen as an oxidant. The reaction mechanism of continuous dehydrogenation of aromatic propanols was investigated by in situ infrared spectroscopy and control experiments. The dehydrogenation process suggested t

Photocatalyzed Oxidative Tandem Reaction Mediated by Bipyridinium for Multifunctional Derivatization of Alcohols.

The multifunctional derivatization of alcohols has been achieved by the bipyridinium-based conjugated small molecule photocatalysts with redox center and Lewis acid site. Besides exhibiting high activity in the selective generation of aldehydes/ketones, acids from alcohols through solvent modulation, this system renders the first selective synthesis of esters via an attractive cross-coupling pattern, whose reaction route is significantly different from the traditional condensation of alcohols and acids or esterification from hemiacetals. Following the oxidization of alcohol to aldehyde via bip…

Advances in aldo-keto reductases immobilization for biocatalytic synthesis of chiral alcohols.

Chiral alcohols are essential building blocks of numerous pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Aldo-keto reductases (AKRs) constitute a superfamily of oxidoreductases that catalyze the reduction of aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding alcohols using NAD(P)H as a coenzyme. Knowledge about the crucial roles of AKRs immobilization in the biocatalytic synthesis of chiral alcohols is expanding. Herein, we reviewed the characteristics of various AKRs immobilization approaches, the applications of different immobilization materials, and the prospects of continuous flow bioreactor construction …

HOO• as the Chain Carrier for the Autocatalytic Photooxidation of Benzylic Alcohols.

The oxidation of benzylic alcohols is an important transformation in modern organic synthesis. A plethora of photoredox protocols have been developed to achieve the aerobic oxidation of alcohols into carbonyls. Recently, several groups described that ultraviolet (UV) or purple light can initiate the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols in the absence of an external catalyst, and depicted different mechanisms involving the photoinduction of •O2- as a critical reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, based on comprehensive mechanistic investigations, including control experiments, radical quenc…

Oxidation of benzylic alcohols to carbonyls using N-heterocyclic stabilized λ3-iodanes.

We present N-heterocycle-stabilized iodanes (NHIs) as suitable reagents for the mild oxidation of activated alcohols. Two different protocols, both involving activation by chloride additives, were used to synthesize benzylic ketones and aldehydes without overoxidation in up to 97% yield. Based on MS experiments an activated hydroxy(chloro)iodane is proposed as the reactive intermediate.

Mild Aerobic Oxidation of Secondary Alcohols with Water Tolerant Cu(I) Catalyst.

Green, aerobic oxidation of secondary alcohols to ketones poses a significant synthetic challenge. To address this, we have developed a highly active (DPA)CuI/ABNO catalyst system capable of aerobically oxidizing a wide range of secondary alcohols, including benzylic and aliphatic derivatives, yielding the corresponding ketones with high yields. The unique feature of this Cu(I) catalyst is its high stability, even in the presence of water. We also prepared CuI from waste copper sources to enhance the system's sustainability.

Arylboronic Acid Catalyzed Dehydrative Mono-/Dialkylation Reactions of β-Ketoacids and Alcohols.

The dehydrative mono-/dialkylation reactions of alcohols and β-ketoacids were realized under arylboronic acid catalysis, furnishing a series of β-aryl ketones and β-ketoesters in yields of 15-99%, with CO2 and H2O being the byproducts. In this context, the decarboxylative alkylation reaction occurred to give β-aryl ketones at 50 °C, while the decarboxylation was suppressed to generate dialkylated ester products at 0 °C. A possible catalytic cycle was proposed based on control experiments.

Bioinspired o-Naphthoquinone-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols to Aldehydes and Ketones.

A biomimetic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)-like oxidation protocol was developed using an ortho-naphthoquinone catalyst in the presence of a catalytic amount of base. The developed organocatalytic aerobic oxidation protocol proceeds through the intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer of naphthalene alkoxide intermediates, a mechanistically distinctive feature from the previous alcohol dehydrogenase mimics that require metals in the active form of catalysts. The ADH-like aerobic oxidation protocol should provide green alternatives to the existing stoichiometric and metal-catalyzed alcohol oxida

1,3-Alkyl Transposition in Allylic Alcohols Enabled by Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer.

A method is described for the isomerization of acyclic allylic alcohols into β-functionalized ketones via 1,3-alkyl transposition. This reaction proceeds via light-driven proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) activation of the O-H bond in the allylic alcohol substrate, followed by C-C β-scission of the resulting alkoxy radical. The transient alkyl radical and enone acceptor generated in the scission event subsequently recombine via radical conjugate addition to deliver β-functionalized ketone products. A variety of allylic alcohol substrates bearing alkyl and acyl migratory groups were succe…

Gas Phase Sensing of Alcohols by Metal Organic Framework-Polymer Composite Materials.

Affinity layers play a crucial role in chemical sensors for the selective and sensitive detection of analytes. Here, we report the use of composite affinity layers containing Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) in a polymeric matrix for sensing purposes. Nanoparticles of NH2-MIL-53(Al) were dispersed in a Matrimid polymer matrix with different weight ratios (0-100 wt %) and drop-casted on planar capacitive transducer devices. These coated devices were electrically analyzed using impedance spectroscopy and investigated for their sensing properties toward the detection of a series of alcohols and wa…

Iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of 3,3-disubstituted allylic alcohols in ethereal solvents.

Ir-phosphinomethyl-oxazoline complexes have been identified as efficient, highly enantioselective catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of 3,3-disubstituted allylic alcohols and related homoallylic alcohols. In contrast to other N,P ligand complexes, which require weakly coordinating solvents, such as dichloromethane, these catalysts perform well in more ecofriendly THF or 2-MeTHF. Their synthetic potential was demonstrated with the formal total synthesis of four bisabolane sesquiterpenes.
