The separation of the five principal alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine, noscapine and papaverine), three minor alkaloids (laudanosine, cryptopine and narceine), meconic acid and some unidentified constituents in gum opium samples has been achieved on a reversed-phase phenyl column by gradient high-performance liquid chromatography using a simple and inexpensive mobile phase system. Four alkaloid compounds including one new compound and three known ones were isolated and extracted from the 70% ethanol extract of Nelumbinis Folium by silica gel column chromatography, octadecylsilyl(ODS) column chromatography and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. Their structures were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, circular dichroism and other methods. Compound 1 was identified as a new compound and named as lotustine B(1). Compounds 2-4 were identified as nuciferin(2), dehydronuciferine(3), N-methylasimilobine(4).

The alkaloids epinastine, 3-methylxanthine and camptothecin were analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). The ionization efficiencies of epinastine and 3-methylxanthine were improved upon the addition of 1,5-diaminoanthraquinone (DAAQ). DAAQ did not show ultraviolet absorbance peaks at wavelengths around 337 nm and 355 nm that are used in conventional MALDI-MS instruments. Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) is an important medicinal plant producing benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIA). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small RNAs (sRNAs) of approximately 21 nucleotides. The cause of drowning deaths in good swimmers may be difficult to solve. After homicide, suicide and other kinds of immersion deaths have been ruled out, not only alcohol and narcotics, but also other psychotropic substances such as thornapple and angel's trumpet should be taken into consideration--at least in adolescents and young adults. The article reports on an accidental death by drowning under the influence of tropane alkaloids after consumption of a decoction of the flowers of angel's trumpet.

Three patients suffering from non-puerperal galactorrhoea over periods ranging from two months to six years were treated with an ergot alkaloid, 2-Br-alpha-ergocryptine (CB 154).
