BACKGROUND: Emotional stress has been associated with the development of alopecia areata (AA) and androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Emotional intelligence (EI), a component of general intelligence, is thought to govern the recognition, expression, and control of stress and other emotions. People with low EI are unable to adequately control stress in everyday life.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate EI differences between AA and AGA patients and a control population.
METHODS: Thirty-five AGA patients and 42 AA patients, with patchy (n = 28), ophiasis (n = 5), totalis (n = 5), and universalis (n = 4…

BACKGROUND/AIM: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common autoimmune hair disorder which is characterized by noncicatricial hair loss. AA commonly presents with localized patches on the scalp and face but may affect any hair-bearing region of the body leading to even more generalized involvement. AA may affect any age group, gender, and race. The current study investigates the demographic characteristics of the patients with AA and subgroups of AA including alopecia totalis (AT) and alopecia universalis (AU) and the prevalence of disease, sex, and age distribution and seasonal variation retrospectively…

With the increasing use of anti-tumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNF) biologic drugs to treat autoimmune diseases, an expanding array of adverse reactions is emerging. Anti-TNF drug-induced alopecia is a less well-known side effect of this class of drugs. The aim of this study was to define the clinical and histopathological features of alopecia arising in the setting of anti-TNF therapy. Clinical and histopathological features of 3 patients who developed scalp alopecia during anti-TNF treatment were examined. Two of the 3 patients also developed psoriasiform lesions outside the scalp, and biopsi…

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease typified by nonscarring hair loss with a variable clinical course. Although there is an increased understanding of AA pathogenesis and progress in its treatments, the outcome of AA patients remains unfavorable, especially when they are progressing to the subtypes of alopecia totalis (AT) or alopecia universalis (AU). Thus, identifying biomarkers that reflect the risk of AA progressing to AT or AU could lead to better interventions for AA patients.
METHODS: In this study, we conducted bioinformatics analyses to select key genes that cor…

Androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata are common disorders of the hair follicle which may heavily influence self esteem and self image. Androgenetic alopecia is caused by the heightened sensitivity of scalp follicles to dihydro- testosterone whereas alopecia areata is induced by an autoimmune reaction. Current drug treatment approaches include the use of regrowth stimulators such as topical minoxidil and oral finasteride for androgenetic alopecia, as well as topical minoxidil, dithranol (anthralin), corticosteroids, contact sensitisers, and psoralen plus ultraviolet A irradiation (PUVA) th…

OBJECTIVES: Alopecia is a soft but meaningful complaint affecting women's physical and psychological health. Female alopecia (FA) has diverse etiologies. Nonetheless, FA is stereotyped as female pattern hair loss, also known as female androgenetic alopecia, and has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to identify the etiologies of FA at a tertiary medical center in Eastern Taiwan.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled female patients with hair loss who visited the dermatology department of (blinded information). A complete history taking was obtained, includin…

Hair follicles are among the most highly proliferative tissues. Polyamines are associated with proliferation, and several polyamines including spermidine and spermine play anti-inflammatory roles. Androgenic alopecia results from increased dihydrotestosterone metabolism, and alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease. This study aimed to investigate differences in polyamine profiles in hair samples between patients with androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata. Polyamine concentrations were determined through high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Hair samples were derivatized …

We report the case of a 16-year-old boy who developed an advanced alopecia areata (AA) type male androgenetic alopecia (MAGA). In 6 months he lost his frontal hair line and showed a sisaipho pattern of alopecia. It probably represents a rare evolution of AA in a wave-like form.

Diffuse androgenetic alopecia (female pattern hair loss), telogen effluvium, and diffuse alopecia areata may have similar clinical manifestations. Subtle details on physical examination and dermoscopy of the scalp may help to identify those disorders. The authors present a practical discussion on how to approach the patient with diffuse alopecia, considering clinical history, physical examination, and dermoscopic findings. If the diagnosis remains unclear after a careful analysis of the clinical signs, a scalp biopsy may help to distinguish between the three diseases. In this first part of our…

Diffuse alopecia is mainly caused by telogen effluvium, diffuse androgenetic alopecia (female-pattern hair loss) and diffuse alopecia areata. Differential diagnosis between the three disorders may be difficult in several occasions. In this second part of our study, chronic telogen effluvium and diffuse alopecia areata are discussed in detail, including clinical, dermoscopic and histological aspects. A flowchart presents a practical and objective differential diagnostic approach to diffuse alopecia.
