OBJECTIVE: Apical thinning of the left ventricular myocardium has been described by anatomists as a normal feature. Nonetheless, it does not appear in most anatomic atlases. We investigated its presence in healthy patients and patients with left ventricular hypertrophy using coronary computed tomographic arteriography (CCTA).
METHODS: Sixty-four patients without a history of cardiac disease and 8 patients with left ventricular hypertrophy were imaged using coronary computed tomographic arteriography.
RESULTS: All 64 patients had a focus of myocardial thinning at the left ventricular apex (me…

The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) was advocated by Mitz and Peyronie in 1976. The concept of this superficial fascia was established by surgical findings of facelift surgery and is familiar to plastic surgeons and anatomists. However, detailed characteristics of this fascia are still not widely known among head and neck surgeons. Moreover, the SMAS is generally located at the parotid and cheek regions and divides facial fat into superficial and deep layers. The SMAS connects to the superficial temporal fascia cranially and to the platysma caudally. The frontal muscle and the per…

Perhaps best known for his discovery of the eponymous syndrome 'Bell's Palsy', Charles Bell (1774-1842) made significant contributions to neuroscience, medical education and philosophy. Our aim was to examine his neuroanatomical drawings in the context of the era in which they were produced and their influence on future scholars. Emphasis is placed on analysing the artistic techniques employed and Bell's unique manner of conveying both structure and function. The images discussed include those featured in his book entitled The Anatomy of the Brain: Explained in a Series of Engravings. These im

Vincenc Alexandr Bohdálek (Vincenz Alexander Bochdalek) is known primarily as an anatomist and pathologist and entered into the history of anatomy by describing a number of anatomical structures. Unfortunately his findings in the field of neuroscience are, with few exceptions, almost unknown. Current reviewtherefore partially fills a gap in the evaluation of the contributions of Bohdálek and based on available archival sources provides an overview of his results in the field of the nervous system research, which accounts for almost half of his works. He studied in detailpredominantly the inner

Interest in studying the anatomy of the abducent nerve arose from early clinical experience with abducent palsy seen in middle ear infection. Primo Dorello, an Italian anatomist working in Rome in the early 1900s, studied the anatomy of the petroclival region to formulate his own explanation of this pathological entity. His work led to his being credited with the discovery of the canal that bears his name, although this structure had been described 50 years previously by Wenzel Leopold Gruber. Renewed interest in the anatomy of this region arose due to advances in surgical approaches to tumors

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and accuracy of ultrasound (US)-guided needle insertion into the subscapularis using fresh cadavers.
DESIGN: A needle was inserted into the subscapularis of adult human cadavers under US guidance using a lateral approach from the posterior axillary fold. An anatomist dissected the cadavers to evaluate the effectiveness of this injection method.
SETTING: University dissecting room.
PARTICIPANTS: Fresh cadavers (N=5).
INTERVENTIONS: US-guided dye injections targeting the motor points of the subscapularis.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Accuracy of the injections and

A century ago an ambitious young anatomist in Rome, Primo Dorello, who sought to understand the cause of abducent nerve palsy that often occurred in patients with severe middle ear infections, conducted intricate studies on the intracranial course of the nerve. In his findings, he identified that the abducent nerve passes through a narrow sinus near the apex of the petrous bone, which formed an osteofibrous canal. Dorello suggested that in this enclosed region the abducent nerve may be particularly vulnerable to compression due to the vascular edema accompanying the infection. Although his wor

The mediastinum is located from the thoracic inlet to the diaphragm between the left and right pleural cavities and contains vital structures of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and nervous system. Over the years, since there are no fascial or anatomic planes, anatomists and radiologists have suggested various schemes for subdividing the mediastinum and several anatomical and radiological classifications of the mediastinum are reported in the literature. The most popular of these scheme divides medistinum, for purposes of description, into two parts: an upper portion, above the upper l…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of prematurity on sulcal formation.
METHODS: We evaluated the depth and volume of the primary olfactory sulcus (developed at 16 weeks' gestation) and the secondary orbital sulci (which start to develop at 28 weeks' gestation) in a sample of 22 adolescents with history of very-preterm birth (VPTB). We compared this preterm sample with a sample of subjects born at term and matched by age, gender, and sociocultural status. The Anatomist/BrainVISA 3.0.1 package was used to identify and quantify the sulci. In addition, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to

Giovanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720) was a physician, archiater of the pope, well-known as an anatomist and epidemiologist, who made an important contribution to veterinary medicine of when rinderpest (cattle plague) affected Europe in the XVIIIth century. His times, his life and career and his main contributions to medicine are described. the main features of the great epidemic of rinderpest which started in 1711 are presented. His book De bovilla peste, published in 1715, illustrates the characteristics of cattle plague and, above all, the control measures is discussed. Of the control measures

The classical anatomist Drew Noden spearheaded craniofacial research, laying the foundation for our modern molecular understanding of development, evolution, and disorders of the craniofacial skeleton. His work revealed the origin of cephalic musculature and the role of cranial neural crest (CNC) in early formation and patterning of the head musculoskeletal structures. Much of modern cranial tendon research advances a foundation of knowledge that Noden built using classical quail-chick transplantation experiments. This elegant avian chimeric system involves grafting of donor quail cells into h

Variations in the arrangement and distribution of brachial plexus and its branches in the infraclavicular part are common and have been reported by several investigators since the 19th century. These variations are significant for the neurologists, surgeons, anesthetists and the anatomists. During routine anatomical dissection of the right axilla and infraclavicular region of a 45-year-old male cadaver, the medial root of the median nerve was found to receive a supplementary branch from the medial aspect of the terminal portion of the lateral cord of brachial plexus and the branch was passing …

BACKGROUND: The German anatomist Hubert von Luschka gave name to several structures in the human body. One of great discussion is the duct of Luschka, part of the biliary system. There are different descriptions of the duct of Luschka. This might lead to confusion in the debate and as to what therapy should best be provided in case of an injured duct of Luschka.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature on descriptions of Luschka's duct and studied the original German descriptions by Hubert von Luschka.
RESULTS: While reading the original work by von Luschka on the hepatobiliary system, we were no

INTRODUCTION: Spigelian hernias are rare hernias of the anterior abdominal wall named after Adrian van den Spiegel, the anatomist who first described them in the 16th century. They represent around 2% of all hernias.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present an 83-year-old female with one week history of a painful right iliac fossa swelling, her examination revealed a tender lump with no cough impulse and non-reducible and her computed tomography (CT) scan showed a mass anterior to ileocaecal valve suggestive of a caecal volvulus. Intra-operative the finding was a Spigelian hernia containing an append

Reproduction and fertility have been objects of keen inquiry since the dawn of humanity. Medieval anatomists provided the first accurate depictions of the female reproductive system, and early microscopists were fascinated by the magnified sight of sperm cells. Initial successes were achieved in the in vitro fertilization of frogs and the artificial insemination of dogs. Gamete and embryo research was in the cradle of modern cell biology, providing the first evidence of the multi-cellular composition of living beings and pointing out the importance of chromosomes for heredity. In the 20th cent…
