Soft tissues influence nasal airflow in diapsids: Implications for dinosaurs.

The nasal passage performs multiple functions in amniotes, including olfaction and thermoregulation. These functions would have been present in extinct animals as well. However, fossils preserve only low-resolution versions of the nasal passage due to loss of soft-tissue structures after death. To test the effects of these lower resolution models on interpretations of nasal physiology, we performed a broadly comparative analysis of the nasal passages in extant diapsid representatives, e.g., alligator, turkey, ostrich, iguana, and a monitor lizard. Using computational fluid dynamics, we simulat

Description of Tooth Ontogeny and Replacement Patterns in a Juvenile Tarbosaurus bataar (Dinosauria: Theropoda) Using CT-Scan Data.

Teeth are continually replaced in most of non-mammalian gnathostomes to maintain their functional dentitions. To clarify the tooth replacement patterns in tyrannosaurid theropod dinosaurs, we examined well-preserved dentitions (both premaxillae, left maxilla, partial right maxilla, and both dentaries) of a juvenile Tarbosaurus bataar (MPC-D 107/7) using X-ray computed tomographic (CT) imaging. Three-dimensional (3D) rendering of the dentitions and staging of replacement teeth allowed quantitative analyses of the tooth ontogeny and replacement patterns in this specimen. These strategies were va

The evolutionary basis of some clinical disorders of the human foot: a comparative survey of the living primates.

The living primates are a highly diverse group of essentially arboreal animals whose feet are variously adapted for grasping, climbing, and leaping in trees. One of the most remarkable aspects of the anatomical variation in the feet of the extant primates is that this diversity can be arranged in a graduated sequence ranging from the primitive transtarsal-opposition type of grasping foot found in the lemurs, through the specialized transmetarsal-adduction type that characterizes the higher primates, to the unique nongrasping foot of humans. The comparative study of this graded series makes it

[Organization of the nasal septum bone and its homologue. II. Os alare et systema palatinum axiale (in fish)].

The aim of these investigations was differentiation and systematization of elements of osseous medial palate and attempt to discover of spheno-orbital bone homologue in fish (os orbito-sphenoideum). 50 adults fish heads of carps, perch , tench , common pikes and trout were examined. The methodology was described elsewhere. It was stated that in examined animals the pair premaxilla was divided into three parts: corps, palate and frontal process. The para-sphenoid bone was also a double biomechanical system, composed of septum homologue and transverse lamina , the same as in other vertebrates. A

[The dorsoventral inversion: An attempt of synthesis].

The invertebrates, with known exception of echinoderms, are hyponeurian and protostomian. By contrast, echinoderms, chordates and vertebrate are epineurian and deuterostomian. Convinced of the uniqueness origin of all species, Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire (1772-1844), had postulated a complete inversion of body plan to explain this difference. He had to face up to the hostility of the fixist Georges Cuvier (1763-1832). Much later, famous embryologists such as Maurice Caullery still believed that this idea was erroneous. However, the progress of comparative embryology and of developmental bio

Morphometrics, 3D Imaging, and Craniofacial Development.

Recent studies have shown how volumetric imaging and morphometrics can add significantly to our understanding of morphogenesis, the developmental basis for variation, and the etiology of structural birth defects. On the other hand, the complex questions and diverse imaging data in developmental biology present morphometrics with more complex challenges than applications in virtually any other field. Meeting these challenges is necessary in order to understand the mechanistic basis for variation in complex morphologies. This chapter reviews the methods and theory that enable the application of

A model design for the labyrinthine membranes in mammals.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: A model of the labyrinthine membranes in mammals may be useful in the study of conditions that involve membrane stress and deformation such as Meniere's disease and diving injuries. STUDY DESIGN: Conceptual design of a model of the labyrinthine membranes in mammals. METHODS: The model is constructed by emulating each of the several chambers of the membranous labyrinth and their connections with mathematically defined geometric shapes. RESULTS: The model design uses a torus to emulate each semicircular canal, prolate spheroids for each ampulla, cylinders for the crus c

An artery accompanying the sciatic nerve (arteria comitans nervi ischiadici) and the position of the hip joint: a comparative histological study using chick, mouse, and human foetal specimens.

Birds and reptiles always carry a long and thick artery accompanying the sciatic nerve (i.e., the sciatic artery), whereas mammals do not. We attempted to demonstrate a difference in courses of the nerve and artery in fetuses in relation with the hip joint posture. Eight mid-term human fetuses (15-18 weeks), five mouse fetuses (E18) and five chick embryos (11 days after incubation) were examined histologically. Thin feeding arteries in the sciatic nerve were consistently observed in human fetuses in spite of the long, inferiorly curved course of the nerve around the ischium. The tissue around

On the olfactory anatomy in an archaic whale (Protocetidae, Cetacea) and the minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata (Balaenopteridae, Cetacea).

The structure of the olfactory apparatus is not well known in both archaic and extant whales; the result of poor preservation in most fossils and locational isolation deep within the skulls in both fossil and Recent taxa. Several specimens now shed additional light on the subject. A partial skull of an archaic cetacean is reported from the Pamunkey River, Virginia, USA. The specimen probably derives from the upper middle Eocene (Piney Point Formation) and is tentatively assigned to the Protocetidae. Uncrushed cranial cavities associated with the olfactory apparatus were devoid of sediment. CT

The carbon isotope ecology and diet of Australopithecus africanus at Sterkfontein, South Africa.

The stable carbon isotope ratio of fossil tooth enamel carbonate is determined by the photosynthetic systems of plants at the base of the animal's foodweb. In subtropical Africa, grasses and many sedges have C(4)photosynthesis and transmit their characteristically enriched 13C/(12)C ratios (more positive delta13C values) along the foodchain to consumers. We report here a carbon isotope study of ten specimens of Australopithecus africanus from Member 4, Sterkfontein (ca. 2.5 to 2.0Ma), compared with other fossil mammals from the same deposit. This is the most extensive isotopic study of an earl

[Pneumatization of the mastoid process in medieval and contemporary skulls in light of radiologic and anthropometric measurements].

Pneumatization and morphogenesis of the temporal mastoid process take place concurrently and exhibit noticeable variability. The mastoid process is phylogenetically the youngest part of the skull. The aim of this work was to examine the pneumatization of the mastoid process in mediaeval and contemporary skulls using radiological and anthropometric methods. 85 male skulls from the second half of the 20th century were compared with 102 male and 50 female skulls from the Middle Ages. Bilateral X-ray images of mastoid processes according to Schuller were obtained and anthropometric measurements we

The anatomy of the sinus of Valsalva.

The anatomy of the aortic root has been studied in different species, and common structural features of importance have been detailed. The findings confirm the universal presence of a well-marked ridge limiting the distal extent of the aortic sinuses. Redefining the sinuses in this way shows that normally the coronary ostia lie within the sinus proximal to the ridge and it appears that their position relative to the ridge is related to an animal's fleetness. Aortic cusps in the fresh state have no recoil tendency to bring them into apposition but lie in a collapsed open position. It is suggest
