Surgeon and Anesthesiologist Perceptions and Expectations of Each Other: Implications for Improving Collaboration.

BACKGROUND: Relationships within the surgeon-anesthesiologist dyad may influence perioperative teamwork, safety, and efficiency, yet little is known about the perceptions and expectations these physicians hold of one another. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative, phenomenological study using semi-structured, one-on-one virtual interviews with 20 surgeons (7 women) and 20 anesthesiologists (13 women), ages 31 to 81 years, representing 24 US states. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded using Dedoose version 9.2.22. After stabilization of a codebook, working in teams, inves…

Patient satisfaction based on concordance in demographic factors between anesthesiologist and patient.

BACKGROUND: The impact of demographic concordance between patient and anesthesiologist on patient satisfaction is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between satisfaction with anesthesia care and patient-anesthesiologist demographic concordance. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of select patient responses to the 24-question Anesthesiologist Patient Safety Questionnaire from June 2023 through December 2024 at a large U.S. anesthesia practice. We examined the relationship between age, sex, and race/ethnicity concordance and patient satisfaction. Multiva

Use and Associated Spending for Anesthesiologist-Administered Services in Minor Hand Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is lacking to support the use of specialized anesthesia providers in minor surgical operations for patients without medical necessity. The authors sought to estimate the extent of potentially discretionary service use (anesthesiologist-administered anesthesia services among low-risk patients). METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective claims analysis using the Truven MarketScan Database to estimate the prevalence and cost of anesthesiologist-administered anesthesia services provided to patients undergoing minor hand surgery (i.e., carpal tunnel release, trigger finge

Sleep, sleep studies and sleep-disordered breathing: basic knowledge for the anesthesiologist.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide a basic understanding of sleep physiology, the pathophysiology of sleep-disordered breathing and the processes applied in undertaking and assessing sleep studies. RECENT FINDINGS: It has become increasingly apparent that obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with heightened perioperative risk. Furthermore, the condition still remains under-diagnosed in patients presenting for surgery. SUMMARY: This review describes the physiology of sleep including sleep stages, sleep monitoring, the normal hypnogram and investigation from simple overnight pulse oximetry to ful

Ludwig's angina in children anesthesiologist's nightmare: Case series and review of literature.

Ludwig's angina is potentially lethal, rapidly spreading cellulitis of the floor of mouth and neck. The anticipated difficult airway becomes even more challenging when it occurs in children. In children, the larynx is positioned relatively higher in the neck, and one does not have the option for blind nasal intubation or awake fiberoptic, which otherwise is the technique of choice in adult patients. We present the clinical course of 16 children and highlight various problems encountered during the anesthetic management of six children who required emergency surgical drainage under general anes

Case files of the toxikon medical toxicology fellowship in Chicago: the poisoned anesthesiologist.

Suicide attempts by health care workers are very serious because these patients have the knowledge of and access to potentially lethal substances. Our patient presented with hypotension and hemodynamic instablility. He was treated with multiple-dose activated charcoal and 2 rounds of hemodialysis. While there was rapid toxicokinetic improvement and extubation on day 2 of his hospital stay, he had prolonged altered mental status, illustrating the long-acting effects of phenobarbital. It remains unclear exactly how our medical treatment regimens alter the clinical course of phenobarbital poisoni

Perioperative management of complex skull base surgery: the anesthesiologist's point of view.

The anesthetic management of complex skull base surgical procedures provides unique problems and concerns for the neuroanesthesiologist. Positioning to access the skull base could put the patient at risk for peripheral nerve injury and some of the positions may increase the risk for air emboli. In addition, tumor pathology and involvement with vital structures could increase the chances for substantive blood loss, destruction of associated nerves or vessels, and may require temporary occlusion of the carotid artery necessitating intraoperative neuroprotection. Neurophysiological monitors may a

Anesthetic Management in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Among Anesthesiologists: Survey-Based Study in Poland.

Background/Objectives: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is increasingly performed worldwide and requires specific anesthetic management due to the complex physiological alterations associated with severe obesity. Although several international guidelines provide recommendations for perioperative care in bariatric patients, their implementation in routine clinical practice may vary. This study aimed to report anesthetic practices among Polish anesthesiologists providing anesthesia for bariatric procedures. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted in October 2025 among Polish a…

Perioperative Patient Blood Management: Evidence-Based Strategies for Surgeons and Anesthesiologists: A Narrative Review.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) has evolved from a transfusion-centered practice to a structured, patient-focused perioperative strategy aimed at improving surgical outcomes while preserving blood resources. In the operating room, where bleeding risk is anticipated and modifiable, PBM requires proactive intervention rather than reactive transfusion. This review synthesizes current evidence on perioperative blood conservation strategies specifically relevant to surgeons and anesthesiologists. Preoperative optimization begins with systematic identification and correction of anemia, most commonly …
