[Comparative evaluation of the antitoxic activity of central nervous system analeptics and their combinations in barbamyl poisoning].

Tests conducted on rats poisoned with increasingly lethal doses of sodium amytal demonstrated the antitoxic activity of an analeptic mixture to be superior to that of picrotoxin, strichnine, corasol and caffeine entering into its composition and also to the activity of bemegride. As to the degree of antitoxic activity in poisoning of mice with sodium amytal (one LD50) the CNS analeptics are arranged in the following descending oder of their action: analeptic mixture, picrotoxin, bemegride, corasol, strychnine. In poisoning with higher doses of sodium amytal (LD84) corasol, strychnine and caffe

Aldicarb poisoning of dogs and cats in Gauteng during 2003.

A survey of aldicarb poisoning in companion animals was conducted by posting questionnaires to all private practitioners in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The survey was designed to determine the percentage of aldicarb cases seen, treatment regimen, clinical signs observed, proposals for preventative actions and more effective treatments. Other questions included duration of treatment, survival rate, cost to clients, post mortem findings and reasons for poisonings.

Application of 2-Aminothiazoline-4-carboxylic Acid as a Forensic Marker of Cyanide Exposure.

Cyanides are infamous for their highly poisonous properties. Accidental cyanide poisoning occurs frequently, but occasionally, intentional poisonings also occur. Inhalation of fumes generated by fire may also cause cyanide poisoning. There are many limitations in direct analysis of cyanide. 2-Aminothiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA), a cyanide metabolite, seems to be the only surrogate that is being used in the detection of cyanide because of its stability and its cyanide-dependent quality in a biological matrix. Unfortunately, toxicokinetic studies on diverse animal models suggest significant

Current ideas on the pathophysiology and treatment of lantana poisoning of ruminants.

Lantana poisoning in ruminants results from the ingestion of toxic varieties of the plant Lantana camara, which contain the triterpene acids lantadene A and lantadene B. Poisoning results in intrahepatic cholestasis and the consequences of the liver injury include jaundice, photosensitisation and ruminal stasis. The decreased ruminal motility causes toxic material to be retained in the rumen and continuous absorption of toxins from the rumen maintains the disease. Lantana poisoning can best be treated by preventing further absorption of toxins. This can be achieved by giving a large quantity o

Synthetic Amphoteric Cryogels as an Antidote against Acute Heavy Metal Poisoning.

The effectiveness of an amphoteric cryogel (AAC) as an oral sorbent (enerosorbent) for the treatment of acute poisoning of small animals (rats) with heavy metals (HMs) was studied in in vivo experiments. The morphological structure of the cryogel was examined using scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and confocal microscopy. The use of the cryogel in the treatment of rats administered an LD50 dose of Cd(NO3)2, CsNO3, Sr(NO3)2, or HgCl2 in aqueous solution showed their high survival rate compared to the control group, which did not receive such treatment. The histologi

Intraosseous administration of antidotes - a systematic review.

CONTEXT: Intraosseous (IO) access is an established route of administration in resuscitation situations. Patients with serious poisoning presenting to the emergency department may require urgent antidote therapy. However, intravenous (IV) access is not always readily available. OBJECTIVE: This study reviews the current evidence for IO administration of antidotes that could be used in poisoning. The primary outcome was mortality as a surrogate of efficacy. Secondary outcomes included hemodynamic variables, electrocardiographic variables, neurological status, pharmacokinetics outcomes, and adve

Dose-Dependency of Toxic Signs and Outcomes of Paraoxon Poisoning in Rats.

Organophosphorus compounds induce irreversible inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, which then produces clinically manifested muscarinic, nicotinic and central effects. The aim of the study was to analyse the clinical signs of acute paraoxon poisoning in rats and to determine the relationship between the intensity of signs of poisoning and the dose of paraoxon and/or the outcome of poisoning in rats. Animals were treated with either saline or atropine (10 mg/kg intramuscularly). The median subcutaneous lethal dose (LD50) of paraoxon was 0.33 mg/kg and protective ratio of atropine was 2.73. The

Central nervous system damage due to acute paraquat poisoning: a neuroimaging study with 3.0 T MRI.

Paraquat (PQ) is an organic heterocyclic herbicide that is widely used throughout the world. Epidemiological and neuropathological studies have shown that chronic exposure to PQ increases the risk of Parkinson's disease. Patients with acute PQ poisoning show damage to the lungs, liver, and kidneys, and some also show symptoms of central nervous system (CNS) toxicity. However, few studies have focused on the acute neurotoxic changes caused by PQ. Dynamic pathological changes in the human brain cannot be explored in animal models. Thus, to elucidate the impact of acute PQ poisoning on the CNS, n

Animal Toxins: A Historical Outlook at the Institut Pasteur of Paris.

Humans have faced poisonous animals since the most ancient times. It is recognized that certain animals, like specific plants, produce toxic substances that can be lethal, but that can also have therapeutic or psychoactive effects. The use of the term "venom", which initially designated a poison, remedy, or magic drug, is now confined to animal poisons delivered by biting. Following Louis Pasteur's work on pathogenic microorganisms, it was hypothesized that venoms could be related to bacterial toxins and that the process of pathogenicity attenuation could be applied to venoms for the preventio

FIBRINOGEN OF THE BLOOD AS INFLUENCED BY THE LIVER NECROSIS OF CHLOROFORM POISONING.

1. Chloroform anesthesia for two hours or more will cause more or less central liver necrosis in dogs, depending on the length of the anesthesia and the susceptibility of the animal. 2. If the fibrinogen of the blood of such an animal be estimated at intervals, it is found that this proteid shows a drop corresponding to the amount of liver necrosis. 3. By administering chloroform, the fibrinogen may be almost eliminated from the circulating blood, and the poisoned animal may bleed for hours from small skin pricks or cuts. 4. The liver can recover from a grave injury due to chloroform and retur

The clinicopathologic significance of enriching grated cassava mash with red palm oil in the production of gari.

The neglect of traditional processing methods in the production of gari (toasted cassava granules) has been blamed for reported cases of poisoning following consumption of gari. This study investigated the nutritional and clinicopathologic effects of not enriching cassava mash with red palm oil (RPO) during gari production. Two gari samples were produced with and without RPO. Total cyanogen, acetone cyanohydrin, free cyanogen, and crude protein contents were not found to be significantly (p > 0.05) different between the two. The samples were fed exclusively to two different groups of Sprague-D

[A case of poisoning by oral lime sulfur].

Lime sulfur is a common bactericide with strong alkalinity, and is highly corrosive to humans and animals. It is rare for lime sulfur poisoning clinically. This article discusses the clinical manifestations of a patient who was poisoned by oral lime sulfur. After the poisoning, the mucosa of the lips and pharynx broke, fever, and pulmonary inflammation quickly appeared. The pulmonary CT showed slight interstitial changes in both lungs. Through high flow oxygen inhalation, fluid infusion, drainage, maintenance of water and electrolyte balance, protection of important organ functions, and other

Toxicology of selected pesticides, drugs, and chemicals. Anticoagulant, cholecalciferol, and bromethalin-based rodenticides.

The control of rodent pests is a continuing goal of mankind. To this end, a multitude of rodenticides have been produced, each designed to kill rodents by exerting their toxic effects on various body systems. As examples, veterinarians have had to manage companion animal poisonings due to anticoagulant, sodium fluoroacetate (compound 1080), thallium, barium carbonate, and zinc phosphide-based rodenticides. Many of these rodenticides were introduced because of their anticipated safety in relation to nontarget species; unfortunately, this has not been the case. Veterinarians must attempt to iden

Hypertensive crisis and death associated with phencyclidine poisoning.

Phencyclidine hydrochloride is a dangerous drug. Its incidence as the causative agent in childhood poisoning is increasing. A pressor effect of phencyclidine has been noted in studies both in man and in experimental animals. We summarize seven cases of poisoning with this drug, including one in which death occurred following a hypertensive crisis. Patients who have ingested this drug should have continuous monitoring of blood pressure in an intensive care unit.

Strychnine poisoning in nontarget species in western Canada: A retrospective case series (2014 to 2023).

BACKGROUND: Strychnine is a highly toxic, plant-derived alkaloid. It has historically been used in western Canada as a rodenticide for control of Richardson's ground squirrels; and in Alberta, as a predacide against wolves, coyotes, black bears, and skunks. However, nontarget species poisonings with strychnine have been widely documented in Canada and elsewhere. Poisonings manifest as acute neuroexcitation and are usually fatal. In March 2023, strychnine was banned in Canada for control of Richardson's ground squirrels, with concerns over wildlife poisonings cited. However, fatal poisonings ha

Amitraz Poisoning: The (Un) Common Poisoning.

Pesticide poisoning is always a clinical conundrum for the emergency physician (EP), the complexity of which increases when the pesticide has no antidote! Over the past decade, there has been a sharp increase in cases of Amitraz poisoning, a pesticide routinely used in veterinary medicine, available without a prescription. The usual presentation includes bradycardia, hypotension, poor sensorium, and miosis. In the absence of accurate history, these clinical features can be confused with the cholinergic toxidrome of organophosphorus poisoning. There is a dearth of literature regarding the prese

Geographical characteristics influencing the risk of poisoning in pet dogs: Results of a large population-based epidemiological study in Italy.

Pets can act as sentinels for human health and thus surveillance of pet dogs has the potential to improve awareness of emerging risks for animal and public health. The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with the risk of canine poisoning. In a large population-based epidemiological investigation in Italy performed from January 2015 to January 2016 and April 2016 to April 2017, descriptive statistics were acquired and analysed to determine variables associated with poisoning events in pet dogs. Results were validated in a test population and forecast analysis of risk was per

Staphylococcal enterotoxin A has potent superantigenic and emetic activities but not diarrheagenic activity.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced by Staphylococcus aureus are pyrogenic superantigenic toxins that are involved in human diseases including food poisoning and toxic shock syndrome. Although the superantigenic activity of SEs has been well characterized, its role and mechanism in clinical symptoms of food poisoning remain poorly understood. In this study, house musk shrews (Suncus murinus), a small emetic animal model, were used to study the role of SEs in clinical manifestations of food poisoning. Administration of SEA induced a potent emetic response in vivo and showed significant s
