Lateral ankle triad: the triple injury of ankle synovitis, lateral ankle instability, and peroneal tendon tear.

Many articles have been published that discuss various lateral ankle injuries and specific lateral ankle pathology. The purpose of this article is to explore and present a specific combination of findings that the author's multiphysician practice has noticed on a frequently recurring basis. The triple injury of ankle synovitis, ankle instability, and peroneal tendon tear can be termed the Lateral Ankle Triad. While it is common to find each of these specific injuries individually, they are often found in combination.

The effect of ankle injury on subtalar motion.

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the medial and lateral ankle ligaments have been implicated in subtalar joint instability. Lateral injury increased subtalar joint varus and anterior translation, while deltoid injury increased external rotation and valgus in studies using static, non-physiologic testing. METHODS: The current study employed a physiologically accurate ankle model using phasic force-couples attached to the muscle-tendon units to reproduce ankle motion. Six-degree-of-freedom kinematics of the tibia, talus, and calcaneus were measured using a VICON motion analysis system under the followin

[Biomechanics of the ankle joint--injury mechanisms].

The complex mechanics of the ankle joint complex depends highly on the integrity of the ankle ligaments. An incomplete restoration of the antero-fibular ligament after trauma may result in a mechanical dissociation of the talus from the ankle mortise. The force that is needed to induce a non-physiological movement of the foot is determined by the individual configuration of the bony and articular structures of the hindfoot. A pes cavus is less protected to suffer of an ankle sprain than a flatfoot. As the leverarm of the peroneal muscles decreases with increasing plantarflexion of the foot, th

Ankle flexibility and injury patterns in dancers.

Lower-extremity injuries are common among dancers and cause significant absences from rehearsals and performances. For this study of lower-extremity injuries in 101 ballet and 47 modern dance students, injuries requiring medical attention sustained over 1 academic year were associated with the following data obtained at the beginning of the school year: ankle flexibility, sex, dance discipline, previous injury, body mass index, and years of training. Eighty-three of the 148 students (age range, 12 to 28 years) reported prior lower-limb injuries, the most common being ankle sprains (28% of all

Brain Neuroplasticity Related to Lateral Ankle Ligamentous Injuries: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle sprains are the most common ankle injuries in sports and have the highest recurrence rates. Almost half of the patients experiencing lateral ankle sprains develop chronic ankle instability. Patients with chronic ankle instability experience persistent ankle dysfunctions and detrimental long-term sequelae. Changes at the brain level are put forward to explain these undesirable consequences and high recurrence rates partially. However, an overview of possible brain adaptations related to lateral ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability is currently lacking. OBJECTIV

[Ligamentous injuries of the ankle joint : Importance of radiological imaging procedures].

Injuries of the ankle joint show lesions of the lateral ligamentous apparatus with an incidence of 1 in 1000 cases. With a range of 0.3-0.7 in 1000 cases, injuries of the medial ligamentous apparatus occur more frequently than previously thought and are often overlooked. Correct imaging diagnostics of the ankle ligaments are mandatory for the prognosis and treatment planning. In cases of clinically strong suspicion of ligamentous injury or osteochondral lesions of the ankle joint, after primary radiographic evaluation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is primarily recommended for a more precise

The use of TightRope fixation for ankle syndesmosis injuries: our experience.

PURPOSE: Ten percentage of all ankle fractures sustain an associated syndesmotic injury. TightRope is a relatively new technique for syndesmosis fixation, characterized by a non-absorbable FibreWire held tight between two cortical metal buttons. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results obtained with the use of this device. METHODS: From January 2011 to December 2015, 54 patients with ankle diastases were treated. Eighteen patients were excluded from the study. Fractures of the fibula or tibia requiring fixation were internally fixed using standard AO techniques. Preoperative and

Management of sports injuries of the foot and ankle: An update.

Injuries to the foot in athletes are often subtle and can lead to a substantial loss of function if not diagnosed and treated appropriately. For these injuries in general, even after a diagnosis is made, treatment options are controversial and become even more so in high level athletes where limiting the time away from training and competition is a significant consideration. In this review, we cover some of the common and important sporting injuries affecting the foot including updates on their management and outcomes. Value of MRI in diagnosing injuries after ankle sprains in children.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, there are only a few prospective studies on the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose injuries associated with ankle sprains in children. We hypothesized that MRI examinations of acute ankle sprains in growing children would show relevant injuries that may have been overlooked by conventional clinical, radiological, and ultrasound examinations. METHODS: Thirty children with acute inversion injury of the ankle were subjected to an MRI examination of the ankle joint, in addition to conventional radiographic procedures. All data were recorded prospecti

[Spiral computed tomography in the diagnosis of ankle and foot injuries].

The data on 187 patients with traumatic lesions of the ankle joint and foot were used to analyze the capacities of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of this pathology. The efficiency of CT versus X-ray study was evaluated. Specific guidelines are given to make spital CT. CT is shown to be of the most informative value in the diagnosis of lesions of the tibial plateau, undisplaced fractures of the internal malleolus, small marginal comminuted fractures, and lesions of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis. There is evidence for that CT plays a dominant role in the diagnosis of lesions of
