VENOM AND VENOM APPARATUS OF THE BULL ANT, MYRMECIA GULOSA (FABR.).

The venom of Myrmecia gulosa (Myrmeciinae, Formicidae) is of a proteinaceous type and is separated by electrophoresis into eight components. The venom contains histamine, a hyaluronidase, and a direct hemolytic factor. It also shows kinin-like activity. In structure the venom apparatus is found to be massively formed internally as well as externally. It is distinguished from the apparatus of representatives of other ant subfamilies by characteristics of the free gland filaments, the reservoir wall, the intra-reservoir glandular area, and the accessory gland.

Survey of whole body-extract immunotherapy for imported fire ant- and other hymenoptera-sting allergy. Report of the Fire Ant Subcommittee of the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology.

A survey of 5300 allergists was conducted to determine the number and geographic distribution of patients receiving immunotherapy for imported fire ant (IFA) allergy in the United States and Canada. Responses were received from 1293 physicians who reported a total of 2573 patients being treated in 28 states. Most patients were from the southeast, but some patients were reported to be receiving IFA immunotherapy in areas outside the boundaries of known IFA infestation. Although IFA is a widespread health hazard in the southeast, it appears to exert an uneven impact on allergy practice in this r

Alkaloids solenopsins from fire ants display in vitro and in vivo activity against the yeast Candida auris.

The urgency surrounding Candida auris as a public health threat is highlighted by both the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) that categorized this species as a priority fungal pathogen. Given the current limitations of antifungal therapy for C. auris, particularly due to its multiple resistance to the current antifungals, the identification of new drugs is of paramount importance. Some alkaloids abundant in the venom of the red invasive fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), known as solenopsins, have garnered attention as potent inhibitors of bacterial biofilms, and

Multipurpose peptides: The venoms of Amazonian stinging ants contain anthelmintic ponericins with diverse predatory and defensive activities.

In the face of increasing drug resistance, the development of new anthelmintics is critical for controlling nematodes that parasitise livestock. Although hymenopteran venom toxins have attracted attention for applications in agriculture and medicine, few studies have explored their potential as anthelmintics. Here we assessed hymenopteran venoms as a possible source of new anthelmintic compounds by screening a panel of ten hymenopteran venoms against Haemonchus contortus, a major pathogenic nematode of ruminants. Using bioassay-guided fractionation coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mas

Three-dimensional visualization and a deep-learning model reveal complex fungal parasite networks in behaviorally manipulated ants.

Some microbes possess the ability to adaptively manipulate host behavior. To better understand how such microbial parasites control animal behavior, we examine the cell-level interactions between the species-specific fungal parasite Ophiocordyceps unilateralis sensu lato and its carpenter ant host (Camponotus castaneus) at a crucial moment in the parasite's lifecycle: when the manipulated host fixes itself permanently to a substrate by its mandibles. The fungus is known to secrete tissue-specific metabolites and cause changes in host gene expression as well as atrophy in the mandible muscles o

Cytogenetics of Four Turtle Ants from the Amazon: First Steps Towards Understanding Karyotype Evolution in Cephalotes.

Ants of the genus Cephalotes have unique morphological traits, with morphotypes specifically adapted to arboreal habitats, earning them the common name "turtle ants". In the Americas, 118 Cephalotes spp. have been identified, 64 in Brazil. Phylogenetic studies suggest 15 distinct groups of Cephalotes spp. In this context, cytogenetics emerges as a valuable tool for comprehending the diversification of these clades. This study used cytogenetics to characterize four Cephalotes spp. from the northernmost Brazilian state of Amapá. The number, morphology, and locations of specific DNA sequences var

Antennal Sensilla Basiconica Responses to Pheromones and General Odorants in Red Imported Fire Ants, Solenopsis invicta.

The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, is a eusocial insect that relies on a sophisticated chemical communication system for colony organization and function. Its olfactory system is vital for detecting semiochemicals in the environment. This study utilized single sensillum recording (SSR) to assess the olfactory neuronal responses of female alates and workers from basiconica sensilla exposed to a panel of 62 individual pheromones and general odorants, including terpenes, terpenoids, pyrazines, pyridines, ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, acids, aliphatic and aromatic acetates, benzo

Diagnostic pitfalls in forensic pathology: Postmortem facial lesions mimicking trauma caused by pharaoh ants (Monomorium pharaonis).

Misinterpretation of insect-related postmortem artifacts as traumatic injuries remains a critical diagnostic challenge in forensic pathology, particularly in enclosed indoor environments. We report a case involving a deceased adult male found indoors with multiple superficial perioral and facial lesions initially suspected to be perimortem trauma. However, based on photographic evaluation by a forensic entomologist, the lesions were identified as likely caused by postmortem activity of Monomorium pharaonis (pharaoh ants), a synanthropic species commonly found in human dwellings. Numerous ant e

SolenopsisDetector: development of an automatic detection system for fire ants using computer vision and deep learning.

Fire ants (Solenopsis spp. Westwood) pose a major ecological and economic threat, mainly due to the invasive potential of certain species. Current identification methods are highly dependent on taxonomic expertise, which can slow down decision-making. The development of an automated detection system could therefore support the identification process. We present SolenopsisDetector (SolenopD), an automated system for identifying Solenopsis ants using computer vision and deep learning. Following taxonomic practice, which emphasizes diagnostic body segments (head, thorax, abdomen), we evaluated 2

Biomechanical components of the plant-insect herbivore arms race: a model test in leaf-cutter ants.

Insects and plants have been locked in an evolutionary arms race spanning 350 million years. Insects evolved specialized tools to cut into plant tissue, and plants, to counter these attacks, developed diverse defence strategies. Much previous worked has focused on chemical defences. How can plants vary their mechanical properties to deter herbivores, and how can insects respond? We test a simple mechanical model that relates the force required to cut thin, leaf-like tissues to their mechanical properties and the geometry of the cutting tool. To remove the confounding effects of tool shape acro

What you eat is what we need: using ants to detect spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) DNA.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of invasive species such as the spotted lanternfly (SLF, Lycorma delicatula) is critical for effective management including eradication efforts and limiting further spread. SLF excretes honeydew containing detectable DNA, providing a unique opportunity to leverage environmental DNA (eDNA) for its detection. This study introduces the ant-derived DNA (antDNA) approach, utilizing ants as 'honeydew samplers' to detect SLF DNA. We validated the effectiveness of this method through three experiments. RESULTS: Using SLF-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we consist

Evidence of a thoracic crop in workers, soldiers, and queens of Carebara perpusilla ants (Formicidae: Myrmicinae).

The ability to share and store food is paramount in group-living animals, allowing a finely tuned distribution of resources over time and individuals and an enhanced survival over periods of food scarcity. Ants have several ways to store food: one of them is their gastral crop, also known as a "social stomach." Nutrients in the crop can be regurgitated to nestmates through oral trophallaxis (mouth-to-mouth) or proceed to the midgut by opening the proventriculus, a valve connecting the crop to the midgut. However, some ants are also known to have a so-called "thoracic crop," an extension of the

Peptide toxins that target vertebrate voltage-gated sodium channels underly the painful stings of harvester ants.

Harvester ants (genus Pogonomyrmex) are renowned for their stings which cause intense, long-lasting pain, and other neurotoxic symptoms in vertebrates. Here, we show that harvester ant venoms are relatively simple and composed largely of peptide toxins. One class of peptides is primarily responsible for the long-lasting local pain of envenomation via activation of peripheral sensory neurons. These hydrophobic, cysteine-free peptides potently modulate mammalian voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels, reducing the voltage threshold for activation and inhibiting channel inactivation. These toxins ap

Foraging grass-cutting ants (Atta vollenweideri) maintain stability by balancing their loads with controlled head movements.

Grass-cutting ants (Atta vollenweideri) carry leaf fragments several times heavier and longer than the workers themselves over considerable distances back to their nest. Workers transport fragments in an upright, slightly backwards-tilted position. To investigate how they maintain stability and control the carried fragment's position, we measured head and fragment positions from video recordings. Load-transporting ants often fell over, demonstrating the biomechanical difficulty of this behavior. Long fragments were carried at a significantly steeper angle than short fragments of the same mass.

Developmental bias of body size and caste by the fire ant social supergene.

Supergenes are clusters of linked genes that drive complex phenotypic divergence. In the fire ant Solenopsis invicta, a supergene determines polymorphic social organization, and its derived (b) haplotype is over-represented among large workers and gynes relative to the ancestral (B) haplotype, acting as a selfish genetic element. We tested whether this caste bias reflects altered juvenile hormone (JH) mediated growth by treating colonies with a JH analogue. We show that BB and Bb pupae reach similar maximal sizes and exhibit a comparable JH-mediated growth response despite consistent Bb over-r

Thermal stress impairs survival and immune responses in ant founding queens.

Rising temperatures associated with global warming affect all organisms, particularly ectotherms such as insects. Ant queens provide an ideal model for studying the effects of thermal stress because of their distinctive life-history traits. After mating, nest-founding queens of many species undergo a critical phase in which they search alone for a suitable site to establish a new colony. Despite growing concern about the effects of thermal stress on organisms, we still lack detailed understanding of how heat intensity and exposure duration influence mortality and immune function in founding qu

Collective ant transport outperforms gravity-based solvers on complex puzzles.

Collective cognition, in which groups display enhanced problem-solving abilities compared with individuals, is a hallmark of ant behaviour. For instance, in navigation tasks, such as the piano movers' problem, a short-term memory-like directional persistence emerges in large enough ant groups and aids them in implementing an effective wall-following heuristic. Here, we investigate the collective problem-solving abilities of Paratrechina longicornis by presenting groups of varying sizes with an array of piano movers' puzzles. We find that increasingly complex puzzles reveal performance differen

Molecular underpinnings of plasticity and supergene-mediated polymorphism in fire ant queens.

Characterizing molecular underpinnings of plastic traits and balanced polymorphisms represent 2 important goals of evolutionary biology. Fire ant gynes (pre-reproductive queens) provide an ideal system to study potential links between these phenomena because they exhibit both supergene-mediated polymorphism and nutritional plasticity in weight and colony-founding behaviour. Gynes with the inversion supergene haplotype are lightweight and depend on existing workers to initiate reproduction. Gynes with only the ancestral, non-inverted gene arrangement accumulate more nutrient reserves as adults

A high-throughput and sensitive method for food preference assays in the argentine ant.

BACKGROUND: Insects pose significant challenges in both pest management and ecological conservation. Often, the most effective strategy is employing toxicant-laced baits, which also must be designed to specifically attract and be preferred by the targeted species for optimal species-specific effectiveness. However, traditional methods for measuring bait preference are either noncomparative, meaning that most animals only ever taste one bait, or suffer from methodological or conceptual limitations. Here we demonstrate the value of direct comparison food preference assays using the invasive and

Restricted antennal movement impacts the tandem running dynamics in a ponerine ant.

BACKGROUND: Tandem running is a recruitment method found in some species of ants where one ant follows another ant to reach a destination having maintained a physical contact with its antennae, throughout the journey. It is considered that the exchange of information regarding the destination among the nestmates happened during the process of tandem running. We examined the impact of restricting antennal movement on tandem running by using Diacamma indicum, a tandem-running ponerine ant by following 480 tandem runs across 9 treatment colonies and comparing it with 10 control relocating colonie
