Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It is characterized by the cessation of nasal airflow with persistence of ventilatory effort, as shown by paradoxical chest and abdominal movement, and varying degrees of oxygen desaturation. This article describes current methods of diagnosing OSA and available treatment for OSA and snoring.

[Epilepsy and sleep apnea syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: The reciprocal influence between Epilepsy and Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS/OSAS) may aggravate the prognosis of both processes. Hypoxemia during sleep in patients with SAS and sleep fragmentation as a consequence of periodic apneas, that provokes a chronic sleep deprivation, could decrease the convulsive threshold in epileptic patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have carried out a descriptive and retrospective study in 20 patients with epilepsy and SAS, of which EEG recordings, video-polysomnography (PSG) and nocturnal oximetry were available. RESULTS: 90% were males. 75% had parti…

[Sleep apnea in myasthenia gravis].

19 middle-aged patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and 10 age-matched controls underwent overnight polysomnography and neuropsychological testing, in order to assess the frequency, degree, type and risk factors of sleep apneas in MG and to show their influence on sleep profile and neuropsychological variables. We observed in 60% of the myasthenics, low grade central type of sleep apneas and hypopneas with resulting oxygen desaturations, occasionally occurring during REM-sleep without influence on sleep profile and vigilance but resulting in significant memory impairment. The only found risk f…

Treatment of sleep apnea syndromes.

Effective means exist to treat most patients with obstructive and central apnea, but acceptance by patients remains uneven. Further work is needed to develop alternative approaches, and to better define the role of therapy of any kind in milder disease.

Diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea.

The diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea is frequently made by taking a meticulous history coupled with a high index of suspicion. Snoring and hypersomnolence are clinical features common to individuals with sleep apnea. Since snoring is said to be a "disease of listeners," it is not uncommon that bed partners reported an increased incidence of depression and marital displeasure. It is for this reason that the spouse or bed partner should be interviewed, since the patient may not be aware of any sleeping problems. Physicians should also be alert to complaints of excessive daytime somnolence, b…

Sleep apnea and pulmonary hypertension.

The pulmonary artery pressure values of 65 patients with sleep apnea syndrome were measured at rest and during ergometer exercise up to 100 W. Pulmonary hypertension at rest was found in 13, and during exercise in 31 more patients. Only 8 patients with pathological pressure findings suffered from pulmonary hypertension in combination with a pulmonary or cardiac disease. In the other 36 patients, no indication of a primary cause of pulmonary hypertension apart from sleep apnea syndrome could be found. Out of the 65 patients, 11 with a finding of more than 20 apnea episodes per hour's sleep unde…

Sleep apnea syndrome after poliomyelitis.

We present a case of severe breathing abnormality during sleep in a young man who had had poliomyelitis 20 yr before. His sleep disorder led … eathing during sleep, and we suggest that their presence has a key role in the development of sleep apnea syndrome in these patients.

Apnea following hyperventilation in man.

To assess the incidence of posthyperventilation apnea (PHA), breathing patterns after active voluntary hyperventilation were determined during EEG recording by means of: (1) a thermocouple in 1060 patients; (2) a pneumotachograph coupled with a capnograph in 100 further patients. All the patients were randomly chosen. PHA of 12.6 +/- 0.48 occurred in only 18% of awake subjects and was not related to the magnitude of the lowering of end-tidal FECO2 during the test. PHA frequency increased when sleep followed hyperventilation and in patients with clinical or EEG evidence of cerebral pathology an…

Nasopharyngeal reflux and neonatal apnea.

Although oropharyngeal dysfunction has been reported as a cause of dysphagia in newborns, to our knowledge oropharyngeal dysfunction and neonatal apnea have not been associated previously. We studied two infants in whom apnea and bradycardia developed primarily while feeding. The diagnosis was established by observation of the swallowing mechanism using cinefluoroscopy while the infant ingested a dilute barium meal. Thickened formula feedings and use of a special nipple resulted in complete cessation of apnea and bradycardia. Careful attention to the details that surround episodes of apnea is …

Sleep apnea in normal kittens.

Apneic episodes in normal 10-, 20-, and 40-day-old kittens were assessed with polygraphic recordings. End expiratory apneas, usually preceded by somatic activity and/or augmented breaths, with durations less than 10 sec were observed in quiet sleep, active sleep, and transitions between states in all age groups. The highest apnea density was found at state transitions. Heart rate decelerations occurred before, during, and following apneas, but decelerations were not related to apnea duration. Combined central and obstructive components were associated with 9% of apneas in normal kittens.

Multi-Window Temporal Context for ECG-Based Sleep Apnea Detection Under Limited Apnea-Label Availability.

Background/Objectives: Supervised electrocardiography-based sleep apnea detection often depends on dense segment-level annotations, creating substantial expert burden. To reduce this dependence, we investigated whether adjacent temporal context could improve classification when ground-truth apnea labels are limited. Methods: We systematically evaluated five context lengths and seven apnea-label retention levels across 35 experimental configurations using participant-grouped five-fold cross-validation with three training repetitions. Results: The results demonstrated that using multi-window tem…

Relationship between sleep apnea severity and mild cognitive impairment in people with obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: It is becoming increasingly acknowledged that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a variable factor influencing cognitive health. The aims of this study were to explore whether the severity of OSA is related to the occurrence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in people with OSA and whether different degrees of daytime sleepiness and nighttime sleep quality are related to MCI. METHODS: The study was cross-sectional. For our subjects, we selected individuals who visited the Sleep Medicine Center of Jinzhou Medical University's First Affiliated Hospital between May 2023 and October 202…
