Five patients developed mycotic spinal arachnoiditis-meningitis causing signs and symptoms of spinal cord neoplasm. Four had cryptococcal infection, the fifth had aspergillosis. In three patients, diagnosis was made at surgery; all three developed acute fungal meningitis postoperatively and two died. The diagnosis was made nonsurgically in two patients and was followed by medical cure. These five and twelve other reported patients with mycotic spinal arachnoiditis shared features that suggested the diagnosis. In contrast to most patients with spinal tumors, those reported here tended to be you

A patient was observed with limited adhesive arachnitis of nontuberculous origin producing Foster-Kennedy syndrome. Ophthalmological, neurological and arteriographic investigations suggested unequivocally presence of a brain tumour. Limited non-tuberculous leptomeningitis is a very rare disease, difficult to diagnose and particularly difficult to differentiate against brain tumour. In the described case only intraoperative findings made possible the diagnosis.

A case of binasal quadrantanopsia due to chiasmal arachnoiditis was reported. The patient was a 28-year-old man who complained of blurring of vision for 12 months. Visual acuity of the right eye was 20 cm/numerus digitorum and the left 0.7X contact lens. Visual field revealed binasal lower quadrantanopsia. Pneumoencephalogram showed poor filling in the chiasmatic cistern, but the angiogram and CT scan showed no parasellar mass lesion. Then optochiasmal arachnoiditis was diagnosed and a right frontal craniotomy was performed. The arachnoid around the post-fixed chiasm was thickened and adhered

Arachnoid cysts are benign, mostly congenital lesions that are asymptomatic in most patients. In some cases, due to their location or sheer size, they produce a mass effect or hydrocephalic obstruction of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and thus might warrant surgical treatment. The goal of the surgery is usually to reduce pressure inside the cysts, to reduce the mass effect, or to restore the CSF pathway. Surgical treatment options are resection, fenestration, or shunting of the cyst. Over the past decades, treatment under sheer endoscopic control either through a tube or via craniotomy of

OBJECTIVE: In children, interhemispheric arachnoid cysts (IHACs) are rare lesions often associated with corpus callosum dysgenesis. It is still controversial about surgical treatments for IHACs. We aim to report our experience with pediatric IHAC patients and evaluate surgical courses and neurological developments.
METHODS: Pediatric IHACs treated between 2001 and 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. IHAC was observed until they represented rapid cyst enlargement or neurological symptoms. Cyst fenestration was done by microscope or endoscope, depending on the IHAC's location. Cyst size and cor

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the demographics, clinical presentation, and surgical outcome of intracranial arachnoid cysts and to review the surgical options.
METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study of 56 cases of symptomatic arachnoid cysts among all age groups treated between 2004 and 2020 at the Bombay Hospital, Mumbai. Endoscopic fenestration, microsurgical cyst excision, and shunt insertion were the interventions performed. Clinical presentation, cyst reduction post-intervention, and complications were studied. The follow-up period varied from 1 month to

BACKGROUND: Intracranial arachnoid cysts are a common incidental finding. Most of these remain asymptomatic with surgical intervention being reserved for those cysts causing symptoms from mass effect or hydrocephalus. It is not properly understood why cysts enlarge nor is it possible to predict in which cysts this will occur. The aim of this study is to review the natural history of incidental arachnoid cysts.
METHODS: A retrospective case review was conducted of all patients diagnosed with an arachnoid cyst between 2007 and 2016. Case notes and radiology reports were reviewed for demographic

The spinal arachnoid web is an abnormal formation of an arachnoid membrane in the subarachnoid space. It is a rare entity with some degree of uncertainty surrounding its etiology. It can result in a displacement of the spinal cord causing pain and neurological symptoms as well as blockage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and subsequent syringomyelia. The syrinx resulting from the altered CSF flow dynamics has been described to assume variable positions relative to the web itself. The "scalpel sign" is regarded as a pathognomonic feature of a spinal arachnoid web. The arachnoid web, however, i

BACKGROUND: Sellar arachnoid cysts are a rare occurrence but may impinge on vital parasellar anatomy and thus are often symptomatic. The etiology of sellar arachnoid cysts is contentious, fueled by heterogeneity in cyst wall structure and contents between cases. The "ball-valve" mechanism is 1 of 2 predominant theories describing their formation, which contends that an aperture in the diaphragm allows cerebrospinal fluid to enter the cyst, propelled by pulsatile flow, but its egress is obscured by the pituitary during the ebb of the pressure wave.

Arachnoid cysts are mainly manifested with the consequent neurological disorders. Even though these cysts may interfere in many systems due to their localizations, there is little information concerning their involvement in endocrinological disorders. We emphasize endocrinological functions together with cyst localizations and neurological disorders in childhood. A total of 50 patients diagnosed with arachnoid cysts were screened for cyst localizations, neurological symptoms and endocrinological outcomes evaluated by pubertal and growth status and hypothalamopituitary insufficiency. We investi

OBJECT: The aim of this study was to report the long-term outcomes of patients receiving endoscopic ventriculocystocisternostomy (VCC) for suprasellar arachnoid cysts (SACs), and to analyze all published reports on outcomes of ventriculocystostomy (VC) versus VCC to compare the effectiveness of the 2 techniques.
METHODS: Eleven consecutive patients with previously untreated SACs were surgically treated using endoscopic VCC. Another 2 patients were treated with VCC following ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. Clinical imaging data were recorded. An analysis was performed of all published pa

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment of symptomatic arachnoid cysts remains controversial.
OBJECTIVE: We present a single-institution experience on surgical treatment of arachnoid cysts.
METHODS: Between January 1983 and January 2008, 92 patients with symptomatic arachnoid cysts underwent surgery at our institute. All patients were evaluated with CT and/or MRI and were operated upon and had regular follow-up examinations.
RESULTS: There were 60 males and 32 females. The mean age was 3.6 years (range, 2 days to 14 years). Forty-eight cysts (52%) were within the sylvian fissure, 16 (17%) were in

OBJECTIVE: Arachnoid cysts constitute 1% of all intracranial mass lesions not resulting from trauma. Suprasellar arachnoid cysts (SACs) are uncommon. Obstructive hydrocephalus is the most common cause of initial symptoms and occurs in almost 90% of the patients with suprasellar arachnoid cyst. We report on 17 patients with suprasellar arachnoid cyst who were treated with neuroendoscopic intervention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients with SAC had been operated on between 1999 and 2007 in our institution. Five patients had previously undergone shunting procedures or craniotomy. Nine bo

A 15-year-old female presented with primary amenorrhea and delayed onset of secondary sexual characteristics. Earlier she was operated for endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for a tense suprasellar arachnoid cyst with obstructive hydrocephalus. MRI revealed recurrence of hydrocephalus. Hormonal levels were suggestive of hypogonadism and deficiency of growth hormone. She was operated for fenestration of cyst. In this case, suprasellar arachnoid cyst presented with delayed puberty, which is unusual.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical manifestation and neuroendoscopic techniques in treatment of suprasellar arachnoid cysts.
METHODS: Between October 2000 and June 2006, 42 patients (22 male and 20 female with a mean age of 10.4 years) with suprasellar arachnoid cysts were treated by endoscopy. All patients presented with hydrocephalus in CT and MRI scanning before operation. Endoscopic ventriculocystostomy was performed in 39 patients and cystocisternostomy was also performed in the other 3 patients. The mean duration of follow-up was 20.8 months.
RESULTS: There was no surgery-related death

Ten rottweilers presenting with spinal arachnoid pseudocysts were investigated. In six dogs, the lesions were localised dorsally at C2-C3; in three dogs, dorsally and ventrally at C5-C6; and, in one dog, dorsally and ventrally at C6-C7. Clinical signs were consistent with focal compression of the affected spinal cord segments. The animals showed ataxia of all four limbs, with truncal ataxia and marked hypermetria in cases of C2-C3 involvement, or ambulatory tetraparesis in cases of C5-C6 or C6-C7 involvement. Other than signs indicative of spina bifida in one dog, no abnormalities could be det
