Dyslexia: the articulatory hypothesis revisited.

Articulatory disorders have been associated with developmental phonological dyslexia in the literature. However, very few information is available about the articulatory movements involved in speech production in dyslexic children. This study uses aerodynamic/acoustic data to explore how dyslexic children produce bilabial stops in French (/b, p/) within a sentence where they occurred in two positions and in three vowel environments. Average durations of articulatory closure and release were calculated in 10 phonological dyslexic children and two groups of age-matched and reading age-matched co

Modification of context-specific nasal emission.

An adult patient with context-specific nasal emission was enrolled in a treatment program that attempted to modify the problem through a combination of biofeedback and articulation training. Prior to, during, and at the termination of treatment, perceptual, acoustic, and physiologic measures were obtained. The data indicate that the articulatory pattern was modified and that such patterns are subject to change through speech treatment.

An Innovative Collaborative Treatment Model: The Community-Based Speech-Language Pathologist and Cleft Palate Team.

PROBLEM: Children with cleft-related articulation disorders receive ineffectual or inappropriate speech therapy locally due to lack of training and a disconnect between the team and local speech-language pathologists. SOLUTION: A collaborative care program that is billable for the team allows the local speech-language pathologist to earn continuing education units and facilitates effective local speech therapy. This program is the first of its kind, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Continuing Education Board for Speech Pathology.

Interallophonic generalization of (r) training.

Twelve children (ages 5:6 to 7:10) who inconsistently misarticulated (r), participated in training programs for specific allophones of (r). Training steps included production of syllables, nouns, noun phases, and simple sentences. Generalization to untrained allophones occurred for all children. However, transfer of training was less likely to occur from training of [epsilon] to clustered [Cr] and [delta] phones. Results suggest that (r) training programs need to include production practice for the shorter, less stressed allophones as well as the more stable [epsilon].

The specific relation between perception and production errors for place of articulation in developmental apraxia of speech.

Developmental apraxia of speech is a disorder of phonological and articulatory output processes. However, it has been suggested that perceptual deficits may contribute to the disorder. Identification and discrimination tasks offer a fine-grained assessment of central auditory and phonetic functions. Seventeen children with developmental apraxia (mean age 8:9, years:months) and 16 control children (mean age 8:0) were administered tests of identification and discrimination of resynthesized and synthesized monosyllabic words differing in place-of-articulation of the initial voiced stop consonants

Upper limb discomfort profile due to intermittent isometric pronation torque at different postural combinations of the shoulder-arm system.

Twenty-seven right-handed male university students participated in this study, which comprised a full factorial model consisting of three forearm rotation angles (60% prone and supine and neutral range of motion), three elbow angles (45 degrees , 90 degrees and 135 degrees ), three upper arm angles (45 degrees flexion/extension and neutral), one exertion frequency (15 per min) and one level of pronation torque (20% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) relative to MVC at each articulation). Discomfort rating after the end of each 5 min treatment was recorded on a visual analogue scale. Results o

Nasalance, nasality, voice, and articulation after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The main purpose of the study was to determine the impact of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) on nasalance and nasality. It was hypothesized that nasalance would change from the presurgical to the postsurgical condition because the surgical protocol involves removal of palatal tissue. An additional objective of the study was to provide objective and subjective data about changes in voice and articulation after UPPP. Because the surgical procedure of UPPP does not involve laryngeal tissue, it was hypothesized that the voice characteristics remain relatively stable. Becaus

Articulatory changes in muscle tension dysphonia: evidence of vowel space expansion following manual circumlaryngeal therapy.

UNLABELLED: In a preliminary study, we documented significant changes in formant transitions associated with successful manual circumlaryngeal treatment (MCT) of muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), suggesting improvement in speech articulation. The present study explores further the effects of MTD on vowel articulation by means of additional vowel acoustic measures. Pre- and post-treatment audio recordings of 111 women with MTD were analyzed acoustically using two measures: vowel space area (VSA) and vowel articulation index (VAI), constructed using the first (F1) and second (F2) formants of 4 poi

Short-term effect of short, intensive speech therapy on articulation and resonance in Ugandan patients with cleft (lip and) palate.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the current study was to assess the short-term effectiveness of short and intensive speech therapy provided to patients with cleft (lip and) palate (C(L)P) in terms of articulation and resonance. METHODS: Five Ugandan patients (age: 7.3-19.6 years) with non-syndromic C(L)P received six hours of individualized speech therapy in three to four days. Speech therapy focused on correct phonetic placement and contrasts between oral and nasal airflow and resonance. Speech evaluations performed before and immediately after speech therapy, including perceptual and instrumenta

Effects of Trunk Motion, Touch, and Articulation on Upper-Limb Velocities and on Joint Contribution to Endpoint Velocities During the Production of Loud Piano Tones.

Piano performance involves several levels of motor abundancy. Identification of kinematic strategies that enhance performance and reduce risks of practice-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD) represents an important research topic since more than half of professional pianists might suffer from PRMD during their career. Studies in biomechanics have highlighted the benefits of using proximal upper-limb joints to reduce the load on distal segments by effectively creating velocity and force at the finger-key interaction. If scientific research has documented postural and expressive features of

Speech-language pathology and dysphagia in multiple sclerosis.

Dysarthria occurs in approximately 40% of all patients with MS. When speech and voice disturbances do occur, they usually present as a spastic-ataxic dysarthria with disorders of voice intensity, voice quality, articulation, and intonation. While language disturbances such as aphasia, auditory agnosia, anomia, dysgraphia, and dyslexia are very rare in MS, cognitive deficits and swallowing disorders are common. Treating dysarthria, dysphagia, and cognitive deficits in MS patients is effective for reestablishing functional daily activities. The types, severity, and rates of deterioration in MS a

Neurogenic dysphonia.

Disorders of phonation and resonation subsequent to damage to the central or peripheral nervous system (neurogenic dysphonia) typically occur with alterations in other aspects of motor speech: articulation, prosody, and respiration. Deficits in voice initiation or coordination of resonation with speech that occur without significant neuromuscular impairment following a lesion to Broca's area are compatible with a motor speech programming disorder, or apraxia of speech. Conversely, damage to upper or lower motor neurons subserving motor speech results in a group of neuromuscular speech disorder

Absence of an association between insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and developmental learning difficulties.

For several years, investigators have been examining the relationship between learning difficulties and a variety of immunological disorders. Two recent studies by Hansen and colleagues reported a negative association between Type 1 diabetes and reading disabilities (dyslexia): subjects with Type 1 diabetes had a lower prevalence of dyslexia than their nondiabetic relatives. In order to control for the impact of environmental variables on learning, we investigated the relationship between Type 1 diabetes and learning problems in 27 sibling pairs, ranging in age from 6 to 20 years. Characteristics and occurrence of speech impairment in Huntington's disease: possible influence of antipsychotic medication.

Although motor speech impairment is a common manifestation of Huntington's disease (HD), its description remains limited. The aim of the current study was therefore to estimate the occurrence and characteristics of speech disorder in HD and to explore the influence of antipsychotic medication on speech performance. Speech samples, including reading passage and monologue, were acquired from 40 individuals diagnosed with HD and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Objective acoustic analyses were used to evaluate key aspects of speech including vowel articulation, intensity, pitch and timin

Ankyloglossia correction: Z-plasty combined with genioglossus myotomy.

Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a disease in which the tongue has a mobility disorder because the lingual frenulum is short and tight, and as a result, the tongue tip is tied up. It may be asymptomatic or may cause various problems such as articulation disorder. Surgical treatment is required in many of the patients, and conventional methods release only the mucosal layer of the frenulum. However, conventional method alone is not as effective; therefore, the authors studied the addition of a partial myotomy of the genioglossus muscle along with mucosal layer release for treatment. The authors p

The effects of Thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation on speech dynamics in patients with Essential Tremor: An articulographic study.

Acoustic studies have revealed that patients with Essential Tremor treated with thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) may suffer from speech deterioration in terms of imprecise oral articulation and reduced voicing control. Based on the acoustic signal one cannot infer, however, whether this deterioration is due to a general slowing down of the speech motor system (e.g., a target undershoot of a desired articulatory goal resulting from being too slow) or disturbed coordination (e.g., a target undershoot caused by problems with the relative phasing of articulatory movements). To elucidate this
