Identification of kidney stones in KUB X-ray images using VGG16 empowered with explainable artificial intelligence.

A kidney stone is a solid formation that can lead to kidney failure, severe pain, and reduced quality of life from urinary system blockages. While medical experts can interpret kidney-ureter-bladder (KUB) X-ray images, specific images pose challenges for human detection, requiring significant analysis time. Consequently, developing a detection system becomes crucial for accurately classifying KUB X-ray images. This article applies a transfer learning (TL) model with a pre-trained VGG16 empowered with explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to establish a system that takes KUB X-ray images an

Harnessing artificial intelligence for advancing early diagnosis in hidradenitis suppurativa.

This perspective delves into the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance early diagnosis in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Despite significantly impacting Quality of Life, HS presents diagnostic challenges leading to treatment delays. We present a viewpoint on AI-powered clinical decision support system designed for HS, emphasizing the transformative potential of AI in dermatology. HS diagnosis, primarily reliant on clinical evaluation and visual inspection, often results in late-stage identification with substantial tissue damage. The incorporation of AI, utilizing machine lear

Voice Restoration and Quality of Life in Larynx Cancer.

Voice restoration following laryngectomy has a significant influence on quality of life (QOL). Three main techniques exist to provide voice: esophageal speech (ES), artificial larynx (electrolarynx [EL]), and tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP). Although the EL was historically the most used technique, TEP has quickly become the gold standard. ES remains the least frequently used technique in developed countries. Technique selection must be made on an individual basis, considering the patient's cancer history and comorbidities. Ultimately, the choice in voice-restoration technique requires joint

Diagnosis and Treatment of Post-Prostatectomy Lymphedema: What's New?

Lymphedema is a chronic progressive disorder that significantly compromises patients' quality of life. In Western countries, it often results from cancer treatment, as in the case of post-radical prostatectomy lymphedema, where it can affect up to 20% of patients, with a significant disease burden. Traditionally, diagnosis, assessment of severity, and management of disease have relied on clinical assessment. In this landscape, physical and conservative treatments, including bandages and lymphatic drainage have shown limited results. Recent advances in imaging technology are revolutionizing the

The War Against Heart Failure Hospitalizations: Remote Monitoring and the Case for Expanding Criteria.

Successful remote patient monitoring depends on bidirectional interaction between patients and multidisciplinary clinical teams. Invasive pulmonary artery pressure monitoring has been shown to reduce heart failure (HF) hospitalizations, facilitate guideline-directed medical therapy optimization, and improve quality of life. Cardiac implantable electronic device-based multiparameter monitoring has shown encouraging results in predicting future HF-related events. Potential expanded indications for remote monitoring include guideline-directed medical therapy optimization, application to specific

Early decoding of walking tasks with minimal set of EMG channels.

Objective.Powered lower-limb prostheses relying on decoding motor intentions from non-invasive sensors, like electromyographic (EMG) signals, can significantly improve the quality of life of amputee subjects. However, the optimal combination of high decoding performance and minimal set-up burden is yet to be determined. Here we propose an efficient decoding approach obtaining high decoding performance by observing only a fraction of the gait duration with a limited number of recording sites.Approach.Thirteen transfemoral amputee subjects performed five motor tasks while recording EMG signals f

A review of user needs to drive the development of lower limb prostheses.

BACKGROUND: The development of bionic legs has seen substantial improvements in the past years but people with lower-limb amputation still suffer from impairments in mobility (e.g., altered balance and gait control) due to significant limitations of the contemporary prostheses. Approaching the problem from a human-centered perspective by focusing on user-specific needs can allow identifying critical improvements that can increase the quality of life. While there are several reviews of user needs regarding upper limb prostheses, a comprehensive summary of such needs for those affected by lower

Analysis of Continuously Varying Kinematics for Prosthetic Leg Control Applications.

Powered prosthetic legs can improve the quality of life for people with transfemoral amputations by providing net positive work at the knee and ankle, reducing the effort required from the wearer, and making more tasks possible. However, the controllers for these devices use finite state machines that limit their use to a small set of pre-defined tasks that require many hours of tuning for each user. In previous work, we demonstrated that a continuous parameterization of joint kinematics over walking speeds and inclines provides more accurate predictions of reference kinematics for control tha

Role of early short-term cardiac rehabilitation in patients undergoing pacemaker implantation.

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) improves the clinical outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases. However, few data exist regarding the role of early short-term CR in patients undergoing pacemaker (PM) implantation. We assessed whether short-term CR following PM implantation was sufficient to improve both physical function and quality of life (QOL). A total of 27 patients with a 6-minute walking distance (6MWD) of less than 85% of the predicted value on the day following PM implantation were randomly assigned to either the CR group (n = 12, 44.4%) or the non-CR group (n = 15,

Text-to-speech synthesis as an alternative communication means after total laryngectomy.

AIMS: Total laryngectomy still plays an essential part in the treatment of laryngeal cancer and loss of voice is the most feared consequence of the surgery. Commonly used rehabilitation methods include esophageal voice, electrolarynx, and implantation of voice prosthesis. In this paper we focus on a new perspective of vocal rehabilitation utilizing alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) methods. METHODS AND PATIENTS: 61 consecutive patients treated by means of total laryngectomy with or w/o voice prosthesis implantation were included in the study. All were offered voice banking and

[Restoration of the voice function after subtotal laryngectomy and formation of tracheopharyngeal shunt].

We introduce our newly designed voice restoration technique for patients who have undergone subtotal laryngectomy for laryngeal and pharyngolaryngeal cancer. To study the efficacy of this technique, we analyzed the voice rehabilitation results in 14 patients with laryngeal and pharyngolaryngeal cancer. Voice function was restored in 13 (92.9%) patients 6-12 days after starting speech therapy. The middle voice, voice of medium timbre, long speech (phrase of 4-5 words) and speech sufficient for communication in everyday life and on the phone were formed. An acoustic analysis of spectral componen

State of the Art: Amputation and Prosthetics.

Amputation is not a defeat or failure of treatment, but an effective management strategy for certain conditions in the pediatric population. The principles of management, especially in the pediatric population, have not changed. Current surgical strategies focus on providing an optimal residual limb for prosthetic fitting. New technology provides improvement in the design and fabrication of prosthetic devices.

Biomimetic NaK Channel Membrane Enabled by a Crown Ether-Coordinated Metal-Organic Framework.

Biological NaK channels integrate exquisite ion selectivity with dynamic gating to regulate life processes, yet achieving such multifunctionality in synthetic channels has remained a formidable challenge. Here, we present a metal-organic framework (MOF) channel membrane that combines two complementary ion-conduction motifs: carboxyl groups from UiO-66-COOH and carboxybenzo-15-crown-5 (15C5-COOH), assembled in a one-step coordination strategy. This hybrid architecture recapitulates essential NaK channel functions, offering both ultrahigh ion selectivity and controllable gating. The membrane ena

Artificial iris implantation in a male with post-traumatic aniridia - case report.

Artificial iris implantation in a 38-year-old patient with post-traumatic aniridia is reported. The patient was assaulted in May 2013 and suffered a blunt trauma to his left eye. Directly after the assault, he was treated at the local hospital, where the upper eyelid wound and the lacerations of bulbar conjunctiva were sutured. One month later, he underwent a combined procedure of cataract extraction and anterior vitrectomy without the implantation of an intraocular lens. Next, he was hospitalised in our department, where apart from medical treatment of secondary, post-traumatic glaucoma, he w
