Hamstring Injuries in Athletes: Anatomy, Pathology, and Treatment.

Hamstring injuries are common in athletes and result in missed time from sport and activities. Recurrent injury is a persistent issue. Injury location and severity dictate treatment. Complete acute proximal hamstring avulsions are typically treated successfully with open or endoscopic surgery, while partial avulsions commonly are initially treated nonsurgically. If required, surgical repair results in high patient-reported outcomes, satisfaction, and return to activities. Chronic complete proximal avulsions have less predictable outcomes. Myotendinous injuries are typically treated nonsurgical

Quadriceps muscle injuries in athletes: a narrative review.

The quadriceps muscles are a large group of 4 muscles in the anterior compartment of the thigh, comprising the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, and vastus lateralis, which in combination act as the primary extensors of the knee joint. The rectus femoris is also responsible for hip joint flexion. Quadriceps muscle injuries are frequently encountered in sports and athletic activities and present a significant challenge in the realm of sports medicine, impacting athletes across various disciplines and levels of competition. A spectrum of sporting injuries and imaging findings

Lumbar Spine Injuries in Recreational Athletes: A Review.

Back pain that is associated with lumbar spine pathology is a growing issue in the athlete population. As an aging population continues to remain active, it is essential for primary care physicians, general orthopaedic surgeons, and spine surgeons alike to understand the nuances of diagnosis and management in the recreational athlete population. This is a unique population due to the increased importance placed on returning to high levels of activity, but, by definition, they enjoy less resources and financial incentive to optimize their rehabilitation and return to sport compared with profess

Imaging of soccer injuries in adolescent female athletes.

Soccer participation is increasing among female adolescents with a concomitant rise of injuries in this group. Age- and sex-related factors, such as the transition from skeletal immaturity to skeletal maturity as well as anatomic, physiologic, neuromuscular, and behavioral differences between females and males, all play a role in injury patterns for these athletes. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears in this group have received a great deal of attention in the medical literature and the media in recent years with increasing knowledge about causative factors, surgical management, and injury

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries in female athletes.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is frequently injured in elite athletes, with females up to eight times more likely to suffer an ACL tear than males. Biomechanical and hormonal factors have been thoroughly investigated; however, there remain unknown factors that need investigation. The mechanism of injury differs between males and females, and anatomical differences contribute significantly to the increased risk in females. Hormonal factors, both endogenous and exogenous, play a role in ACL laxity and may modify the risk of injury. However, data are still limited, and research involving o

Core Muscle Injury: Evaluation and Treatment in the Athlete.

BACKGROUND: Pain in the groin region, where the abdominal musculature attaches to the pubis, is referred to as a "sports hernia,""athletic pubalgia," or "core muscle injury" and has become a topic of increased interest due to its challenging diagnosis. Identifying the cause of chronic groin pain is complicated because significant symptom overlap exists between disorders of the proximal thigh musculature, intra-articular hip pathology, and disorders of the abdominal musculature. PURPOSE: To present a comprehensive review of the pathoanatomic features, history and physical examination, and imag

Carbohydrate Considerations for Athletes with a Spinal Cord Injury.

The Paralympic movement is growing in popularity, resulting in increased numbers of athletes with a spinal cord injury (SCI) competing in various sport disciplines. Athletes with an SCI require specialized recommendations to promote health and to maximize performance, as evidenced by their metabolic and physiological adaptations. Nutrition is a key factor for optimal performance; however, scientifically supported nutritional recommendations are limited. This review summarizes the current knowledge regarding the importance of carbohydrates (CHO) for health and performance in athletes with an SC

Sagittal band, boutonniere, and pulley injuries in the athlete.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: While hand injuries occur frequently in the athletic population, sagittal band ruptures, boutonniere deformities, and pulley ruptures are infrequently encountered. These injuries represent diagnostic challenges and can result in significant impairment. Early recognition with appropriate treatment is necessary to maximize recovery and minimize return to athletic competition. This review will focus on the underlying mechanism, pathophysiology of injury, diagnosis, and treatment of each of these injuries. RECENT FINDINGS: With respect to sagittal band ruptures, boutonniere def

Overuse Injuries of the Pediatric and Adolescent Throwing Athlete.

In the hypercompetitive environment of year round youth baseball, arm pain is commonplace. Although much research has been done about injuries in the overhead throwing athlete, the emphasis has been on the more elite levels, where athletes have reached full development. The anatomy of the skeletally immature athlete, including open physeal plates and increased tissue laxity, raises unique issues in the presentation and treatment of repetitive throwing injuries of the elbow and shoulder. With a focus on "little leaguers," this discussion evaluates five of the most common elbow and shoulder inju

Labrum and rotator cuff injuries in the throwing athlete.

The large amount of force imparted across the shoulder during the act of throwing makes the glenohumeral joint highly susceptible to injury in the athlete performing overhead throwing motions. The bony incongruity of the shoulder enables greater range of motion than any other joint in the body, but it also results in significant strain on the surrounding soft tissues during the throwing motion. Throwers can present with acute injuries, but more commonly they suffer from chronic overuse conditions resulting from repetitive overload. Proper management requires early recognition with treatment di

Common medial elbow injuries in the adolescent athlete.

Recently there has been increased year-round sports participation among children and adolescents with limited to no rest periods. This has led to increases in pediatric repetitive stress injuries, once considered a rarity. Whether in the throwing athlete or in the athlete that experiences repetitive axial loading; increased medial tension and overload syndromes can lead to stress reactions and fractures. This occurs in the developing athlete due to the bone being weaker than the surrounding tendons and ligaments. The medial elbow is a high stress area and is susceptible to many conditions incl

Ulnar collateral ligament injuries in the throwing athlete.

Repetitive valgus forces on the throwing elbow place significant stress on that joint. This stress can cause structural damage and injury to the ulnar collateral ligament. Many acute injuries of the throwing elbow are caused by repetitive chronic wear. Although much work has been done on injury prevention in youth who are pitchers, overuse injury in throwing sports constitutes an epidemic. Failing nonsurgical management, ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction is a viable option to return the throwing athlete to competition.

Injury risk management plan for volleyball athletes.

Volleyball is an increasingly popular team sport. As with any competitive sport, there is an inherent risk of injury that must be recognized and collaboratively managed. This article provides a practical approach to the management of volleyball injuries within a team or organization. A brief review of the epidemiological data is presented which establishes (i) ankle sprain, (ii) shoulder overuse injury, (iii) patella tendinopathy, and (iv) anterior cruciate ligament injury as the primary injuries to address amongst these athletes. The interaction of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors f

Triangular fibrocartilage complex injuries in the elite athlete.

Injuries to the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) in athletes can be caused by acute trauma, chronic repetitive loading, or a combination of both. Regardless of cause, the management of TFCC injuries in the high-performance athlete is often different from the basic tenets applied to the general population. The diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation regimen should be individualized and sport-specific in athletes, taking into consideration the priorities and needs of the athlete while striking a balance between healing, return to play, and long-term well-being.

Cervical spine injury management in the helmeted athlete.

The relative incidence of catastrophic cervical spine injury in sports is low compared to other injuries. However, the potential catastrophic and life-altering consequences of spine injury cause understandable concern regarding the prehospital management and care of the cervical-spine-injured athlete. This is complicated when injured athletes participate in equipment-intensive sports, such as football, where helmets and facemasks are potential barriers to obtaining immediate access to the athlete's airway. Cervical spine injuries in these cases necessitate delicate and precise management, ofte
