Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by concentration problems, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Disturbances in dopamine and/or noradrenalin neurotransmission are probably the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of ADHD. Around 80% of variants of the phenotype can be ascribed to hereditary factors. There are various chromosomal loci containing ADHD genes. They partially overlap the loci found in linkage studies on dyslexia and autism. It seems likely that a number of genetic variants, each with a small effect size, in combination wi

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is characterized by the inability to appropriately modulate attention and/or impulse control and hyperactivity, resulting in social, academic and occupational underachievement, is presently the topic of intensive discussion in German psychiatry. With a prevalence of 3-5%, ADHD is one of the most frequently seen disorders in child and adolescent psychiatry. With nearly 50% of childhood patients also affected during adulthood, this disorder is of much higher clinical significance for psychiatry than presumed thus far. The present review disc

This article presents a review of the literature on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and preschool children. A review of the research revealed a predominant focus on pharmacological intervention, with considerably less research on other intervention approaches to ADHD in preschoolers. In particular, there was limited research related specifically to characteristics and best treatment of language-impaired preschool children with ADHD. The available literature did provide important information to further the understanding of the nature of ADHD in preschool-age children and to guid

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is a common psychiatric disorder, with onset before age seven. The diagnosis is based on a careful history and standardized rating scales, and stimulant medications remain the drugs of choice. Children who do not respond to stimulants, or who have other significant psychiatric disorders, should be referred to appropriate mental health professionals.

Attentional lapses are usually defined as temporary and often brief shifts of attention away from some primary task to unrelated internal information processing. This study addressed the incidence of attention lapses and differences in attentional functioning in 30 children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), 26 healthy children, and 29 children with spina bifida myelomeningocele and hydrocephalus (SBH). Assessments were conducted using computerized tonic and phasic attention tests, the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and the Trail Making Test Form B (TMT-B). The group w

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are frequently comorbid and, as both are defined as neurodevelopmental disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, simultaneous diagnosis is possible. However, despite the frequency of this comorbid state, its endophenotypic features remain unclear. This study thus aimed to describe the behavioral and emotional problems in boys with comorbid ASD and ADHD using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).
METHODS: In total, 102 boys (age, 6-12 years

Objective: The present study aimed to examine the association between ADHD and suicide attempts among adolescents with bipolar disorder. Method : Participants were 168 adolescents who fulfilled DSM-IV-TR criteria for bipolar disorder. They were divided into 2 groups: The first group of patients with bipolar disorder with a history of suicide attempts (n = 84) and the second group without a history of suicide attempts (n = 84). ADHD and other variables were analyzed using a chi-squared test and logistic regression model. Results: No significant difference was observed between the 2 groups in co

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of methylphenidate on the diagnosis of oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) comorbid with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
METHOD: We conducted an open-label study in which 10 children and adolescents with a dual diagnosis of ODD and ADHD were assessed for their ODD symptoms and treated with methylphenidate. At least one month after ADHD symptoms were under control, ODD symptoms were reevaluated with the Parent form of the Children Interview for Psychiatric Syndromes (P-ChIPS).
RESULTS: Nine of the 10 patients no longer fulfilled diagnostic crit

Comorbidity of tic disorder (TD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children is common but not fully understood. Thus we investigated the effect of TD and ADHD on the amplitude of the postimperative negative variation (PINV) in children with combined tic + hyperactivity symptoms (TD + HA). PINV was chosen as an indicator of frontal lobe functioning that is closely related to self-regulation of behavior. PINVs of four groups of children (healthy controls, pure TD, pure ADHD, and combined TD + HA; total number 43) were elicited in an auditory warned reaction task in three con

In this issue of the Journal, Reed and colleagues1 explore the intersection of 2 important public health problems: overweight/obesity and attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), both having a high population prevalence and tending to start in childhood. They analyzed data cross-sectionally and longitudinally from a UK birth cohort of 7,908 youth, including 442 with ADHD by either actual diagnosis or parent-rated threshold score. This epidemiologic ADHD prevalence was comparable to those in other countries, although the actual diagnosis rate was lower. They added a cross-lagged longit

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental childhood disorder, which in most cases persists into adulthood, causing severe functional impairment. ADHD constitutes an important risk factor for the onset of use and the development of dependence on psychoactive substances. Impulse control disorders, anxiety, mood disorders, and substance abuse are the most common comorbid disorders. The present study aims to estimate the prevalence of ADHD in adult users of psychoactive substances who have attended a treatment program in a special detoxification unit for

BACKGROUND: Athletes who are diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of concussion compared to other athletes. Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) is a widely used concussion tool, but it relies on pre-injury baseline testing that can be affected by psychiatric conditions. This research aims to determine if there are differences in pre-injury testing composite scores in student-athletes with ADHD compared to those without ADHD diagnosis.
METHODS: We obtained 11,563 pre-season ImPACT assessments of 7,454 student-athle
