[Multidimensionality of inner speech and its relationship with abnormal perceptions].

BACKGROUND: Inner speech is a common human experience. Recently, there have been studies linking this experience with cognitive functions, such as problem solving, reading, writing, autobiographical memory, and some disorders, such as anxiety and depression. In addition, inner speech is recognised as the main source of auditory hallucinations. OBJECTIVES: The main purpose of this study is to establish the factor structure of Varieties of Inner Speech Questionnaire (VISQ) in a sample of the Colombian population. Furthermore, it aims at establishing a link between VISQ and abnormal perceptions.

Use of the dichotic listening technique with learning disabilities.

Dichotic listening (DL) techniques have been used extensively as a non-invasive procedure to assess language lateralization among children with and without learning disabilities (LD), and with individuals who have other auditory system related brain disorders. Results of studies using DL have indicated that language is lateralized in children with LD and that the lateralized language asymmetries do not develop after age 6 nor are they affected by gender. Observed differences in lateralized language processes between control children and those with LD were found not due to delayed cerebral domi

The Relationship Between Auditory and Cognitive Processing Abilities in Children With Specific Learning Disorders.

PURPOSE: Specific learning disorder (SLD) refers to a pattern of learning difficulties characterized by problems with reading, writing, or mathematics that are not solely due to intellectual disabilities, sensory deficits, or other neurological or medical conditions. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the processing and organizing of information. Auditory and cognitive processing is affected in most children with SLD, although to a varying degree. However, it is still unclear whether there exists any relationship between auditory and cognitive processing disorders in children wit

Rate of information segregation in developmentally dyslexic children.

Slowed processing of sequential perceptual information is related to developmental dyslexia. We investigated this unimodally and crossmodally in developmentally dyslexic children and controls ages 8-12 years. The participants judged whether two spatially separate trains of brief stimuli, presented at various stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) in one or two senses, were synchronous or not. The stimulus trains consisted of light flashes in vision, clicks in audition, and indentations of the skin in the tactile sense. The dyslexic readers required longer SOAs than controls for successful performan

Developmental dysphasia: clinical importance and underlying neurological causes.

This survey deals with two aspects of developmental dysphasia which are relevant to child psychiatry; the early diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental dysphasia, which may prevent the progression of learning and behaviour disorders, and the underlying biological causes of this neuro-developmental disorder. The pathophysiology of developmental dysphasia is complex and age-related. In the pre-verbal and early verbal stage, the severity of the clinical picture is primarily determined by concomitant motor pathology (motor dysfunction, dysarthria, general and oral dyspraxia) and by

Neural signature of the conscious processing of auditory regularities.

Can conscious processing be inferred from neurophysiological measurements? Some models stipulate that the active maintenance of perceptual representations across time requires consciousness. Capitalizing on this assumption, we designed an auditory paradigm that evaluates cerebral responses to violations of temporal regularities that are either local in time or global across several seconds. Local violations led to an early response in auditory cortex, independent of attention or the presence of a concurrent visual task, whereas global violations led to a late and spatially distributed response

Auditory N1, N2, and MMN to Pure-Tone and Consonant-Vowel Stimuli in Developmental Dyslexia and Benign Rolandic Epilepsy: A Progressive Insight Into the Underlying Disruptive Neurophysiology.

PURPOSE: Benign rolandic epilepsy or benign epilepsy in childhood with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) and developmental dyslexia (DD) are two of the most studied disorders in childhood. Despite decades of research, the neurophysiological mechanisms underpinning these disorders are largely unknown. Here, we use auditory event-related potentials (AERPs) to shed light on these issues, since several authors have reported the existence of language and learning impairments. AERPs reflect the activation of different neuronal populations and are suggested to contribute to the evaluation of auditory dis

Gaps-in-noise (GIN©) test results in children with and without reading disabilities and phonological processing deficits.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the gaps-in-noise (GIN(©)) test could differentiate children with dyslexia and significant phonological awareness deficits from a group of children with normal reading skills. DESIGN: A prospective study of GIN test performance in two groups of children. Participants were administered routine audiological tests, a phonological processing test, and an auditory temporal resolution test (GIN test). Statistical testing was completed to determine if significant differences existed between groups on GIN test results and phonological processing measures, and to examine pot

Frequency modulation detection in Mandarin Chinese-speaking amusics across modulation rate, carrier frequency, and stimulus duration.

Frequency modulation (FM) detection was examined in Mandarin Chinese-speaking listeners with congenital amusia, including pure amusics and tone agnosics (without and with lexical tone deficits, respectively). Thresholds were measured across modulation rates, carrier frequencies, and stimulus durations. Amusics exhibited elevated FM detection thresholds relative to controls, with no difference between pure amusics and tone agnosics. No significant interactions were observed between listener group and acoustic parameters, suggesting the group difference did not vary reliably across modulation ra

Auditory Brainstem Responses in Children with Auditory Processing Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The ASHA recommends including electrophysiological measures in an auditory processing disorder (APD) assessment battery, but few audiologists do so, potentially because of limited published evidence for its utility. PURPOSE: This study compared the auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) of children with APD with age-matched children and adults. STUDY SAMPLE: This study retrospectively examined the records of 108 children suspected of APD (sAPD) who had click-evoked ABRs recorded as part of their clinical assessment. Twenty adults and 22 typically developing (TD) children were recrui

Remediation of Perceptual Deficits in Progressive Auditory Neuropathy: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a hearing disorder that affects neural activity in the VIIIth cranial nerve and central auditory pathways. Progressive forms have been reported in a number of neurodegenerative diseases and may occur as a result of both the deafferentiation and desynchronisation of neuronal processes. The purpose of this study was to describe changes in auditory function over time in a patient with axonal neuropathy and to explore the effect of auditory intervention. METHODS: We tracked auditory function in a child with progressive AN associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth

Atypical Change Detection in Sound Sequences: A Behavioral and Magnetoencephalography Study in Congenital Amusia.

Pitch change detection and pitch memory are behaviorally impaired in congenital amusia. Yet rather preserved mismatch negativity (MMN) to unexpected pitch changes has previously been reported using EEG, suggesting a discrepancy between conscious and preattentive pitch perception in this population. Coupling MEG with EEG, our study re-examined MMN in congenital amusia in light of two factors: stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) and change size of the deviant. Individuals with and without congenital amusia passively listened to oddball sequences with either frequency (pitch) or intensity (loudness)

Altered resting-state connectivity of the auditory cortex in congenital amusia: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study in Mandarin speakers.

Brain imaging studies have reported that the neural deficits of congenital amusia in non-tonal language speakers are mainly in the connectivity between the auditory cortex and the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in the right hemisphere. However, the relationship between the functional connectivity (FC) in these regions and the music perception ability of amusia in tonal language speakers remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the FC characteristics of amusia in Mandarin speakers in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data by voxel-wise connectivity analyses with seeds in

Phonological, temporal and spectral processing in vowel length discrimination is impaired in German primary school children with developmental dyslexia.

It is still unclear whether phonological processing deficits are the underlying cause of developmental dyslexia, or rather a consequence of basic auditory processing impairments. To avoid methodological confounds, in the current study the same task and stimuli of comparable complexity were used to investigate both phonological and basic auditory (temporal and spectral) processing in dyslexia. German dyslexic children (Grades 3 and 4) were compared to age- and grade-matched controls in a vowel length discrimination task with three experimental conditions: In a phonological condition, natural vo

Psychophysical evidence for a general temporal processing deficit in children with dyslexia.

The hypothesis of a general (i.e. cross-modal) temporal processing deficit in dyslexia was tested by examining rapid processing in both the auditory and the visual system in the same children with dyslexia. Participants were 10- to 12-year-old dyslexic readers and age-matched normal reading controls. Psychophysical thresholds were estimated for auditory gap and visual double flash detection, using a two-interval, two-alternative forced-choice paradigm. Significant group differences were found for the auditory and the visual test. Furthermore, temporal processing measures were significantly rel

A case study of developmental phonological dyslexia: Is the attentional deficit in the perception of rapid stimuli sequences amodal?

The attentional blink (AB) refers to a decrease in accuracy that occurs when participants are required to detect the second of two rapidly sequential targets displayed randomly in a stream of distracters. Dyslexic individuals have been shown to exhibit a prolonged AB in the visual modality, interpreted as evidence of sluggish attentional shifting (SAS). However, the amodal SAS theory predicts that the disorder should further extend to the auditory modality, then resulting in a phonological disorder as typically found in developmental dyslexia. Otherwise, it has been demonstrated that a visual

Auditory processing deficits in children with reading and language impairments: can they (and should they) be treated?

Sixty-five children with specific reading disability (SRD), 25 children with specific language impairment (SLI), and 37 age-matched controls were tested for their frequency discrimination, rapid auditory processing, vowel discrimination, and consonant-vowel discrimination. Subgroups of children with SRD or SLI produced abnormal frequency discrimination (42%), rapid auditory processing (12%), vowel discrimination (23%), or consonant-vowel discrimination (18%) thresholds for their age. Twenty-eight of these children trained on a programme that targeted their specific auditory processing deficit

A comparison of Dysphonia Severity Index and Acoustic Voice Quality Index measures in differentiating normal and dysphonic voices.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to investigate and compare the feasibility and robustness of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) in diagnostic accuracy, differentiating normal and dysphonic voices. METHODS: A group of 264 subjects with normal voices (n = 105) and with various voice disorders (n = 159) were asked to read aloud a text and to sustain the vowel /a/. Both speech tasks were concatenated, and perceptually rated for dysphonia severity by five voice clinicians. They rated the Grade (G) and the overall dysphonia severity with a visual analog

Functional correlates of the speech-in-noise perception impairment in dyslexia: an MRI study.

Dyslexia is a language-based neurodevelopmental disorder. It is characterized as a persistent deficit in reading and spelling. These difficulties have been shown to result from an underlying impairment of the phonological component of language, possibly also affecting speech perception. Although there is little evidence for such a deficit under optimal, quiet listening conditions, speech perception difficulties in adults with dyslexia are often reported under more challenging conditions, such as when speech is masked by noise. Previous studies have shown that these difficulties are more pronou
