CONCLUSION: The results of the present study reject the hypothesis that epithelial inclusions into the ossicles could cause cholesteatoma recurrences, but strongly suggest the performance of a safe cleaning procedure for ossicular remnants to make them usable in ossiculoplasty in patients with partially or non-encapsulated cholesteatoma.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to define, before any sort of cleaning procedure, if there is any epithelial inclusion inside the ossicles of patients with cholesteatoma and if the findings could be correlated with surgical aspect of cholesteatoma.

BACKGROUND: Autograft dilatation after the Ross procedure is the most common cause of late autograft failure. We looked at results after reoperation for autograft dysfunction using autograft sparing and composite root replacement techniques.
METHODS: Data were abstracted from our prospectively collected Ross registry for 160 consecutive patients who underwent a Ross procedure by a single surgeon between 1994 and 2008. Follow-up records were obtained, and the last echocardiographic report after reoperation was analyzed.
RESULTS: Autograft reoperation was necessary in 17 patients, at a median

BACKGROUND: It has been postulated that pterygium results from hypo function of limbal stem cells. Therefore conjunctival-limbal autograft has been advocated for the treatment of this condition. This study was undertaken to evaluate the results of conjunctival-limbal autograft procedure in primary and recurrent pterygia.
METHODS: 32 eyes of 28 individuals with primary and recurrent pterygium (24 primary, 8 recurrent) were undertaken for conjunctival-limbal autograft procedure under peribulbar anaesthesia followed by topical antibiotic- steroid drops for two weeks. The cases were reviewed as p

We present a case of a 24-year-old, otherwise healthy, man who sustained a right knee injury after a fall. A small, comminuted inferior pole patella fracture with medial and lateral retinacular tears was encountered that required a small, nonarticular partial patellectomy and patellar tendon repair. An uneventful postoperative course was complicated by a fall onto a flexed knee and rerupture of the patellar tendon at 3 months following surgery. Intraoperatively, a significant tissue void was seen in the area of the prior repair. The patellar tendon was reconstructed with semitendinosus and gra

BACKGROUND: Surgeon-dependent variables influencing pterygium surgical outcome using the conjunctival autograft technique include conjunctival retraction as a consequence of subepithelial contracting fibrous tissue, and autograft inversion causing necrosis and sloughing of the graft.
METHOD: A simple and useful technique of pterygium excision is described, which helps to ensure the correct surface and linear orientations of the conjunctival autograft, and also defines the end point of adequate excision of the subepithelial connective tissue.
CONCLUSION: This simple technique of defining the

Intercalary resection and reconstruction for tumors have become increasingly popular. We asked whether pasteurized autologous bone graft was comparable to other reported reconstruction methods regarding union rates, complications, and functional outcomes. We retrospectively analyzed the outcome of 21 intercalary pasteurized bones in lower extremities. Ultimate graft survival, union rate, and union time were evaluated as a function of clinical variables, such as age, gender, body mass index, location of intercalary segment, primary tumor type, use of chemotherapy, percentage and length of resec

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficiency of limbal conjunctival autografting technique in pterygium surgery.
METHODS: Eighty-four eyes of 68 patients with pterygium were treated by simple excision technique and 29 eyes of 24 patients with pterygium were treated by limbal conjunctival autografting technique. The definition of recurrence was fibrovascular tissue over the limbus onto the cornea in the area of previous pterygium excision.
RESULTS: The ages of the patients were between 25 and 88. The follow-up periods ranged from 6 to 25 months. The patients treated by simple excision technique wer

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of narrow-strip conjunctival autograft surgery in the treatment of pterygium.
DESIGN: Retrospective noncomparative interventional case series.
PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-one consecutive interventions between 1994 and 2005 in 20 eyes of 18 patients for primary (n = 17 cases) or recurrent (n = 4 cases) pterygia.
INTERVENTION: Surgical excision of the pterygium and conjunctival transplantation with a narrow-strip technique. In all cases, a 2-mm-wide autograft was secured adjacent and posterior to the limbus, leaving a 2- to 3-mm zone of bare sclera between the graf

Dilatation of the pulmonary autograft is a problem described following Ross procedure for aortic valve replacement. Patients at risk seem to be those with aortic insufficiency, bicuspid aortic valves, and those with aneurismal ascending aortas. We describe a technique for encasing the pulmonary autograft in a Dacron tube to prevent dilatation in these patients. This technique is reproducible and includes sewing the coronary arteries to all layers of the autograft and Dacron construct. Short-term follow-up shows excellent outcomes with respect to autograft valve function and lack of annular or

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effects of limbal epithelial autograft transplantation and pterygium excision in the treatment of pterygium.
METHODS: A prospective randomized paired-eye trial was studied. There were 208 patients (229 eyes) with initial pterygium, and they were allocated to two groups: excision of pterygium with limbal epithelial autograft transplantation surgery (A group, 106 cases and 124 eyes) and simple pterygium excision (B group, 102 cases and 105 eyes). The criteria for recovery were corneal transparency with stable epithelial healing and no abnormal proliferation

BACKGROUND AND AIMS OF THE STUDY: Although the Ross procedure has recently been recognized as one of the best replacements of the aortic valve, regurgitation has occasionally been observed with dilatation of the sinotubular junction (STJ) and/or basal ring (BR). This study was designed to evaluate the native distensibility of the free pulmonary root under systemic pressure.
METHODS: Pulmonary arterial grafts (n = 7) were taken from pig hearts and pressurized (20-100 cmH2O) with crystal sensors attached around the STJ and BR. Dimensions of the STJ and BR were measured using a digital 3-D ultra

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the functional capacity of thyroid autografts after total thyroidectomy in a rabbit model.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-eight rabbits underwent total thyroidetomy. One of the two thyroid lobes was cut into 1-mm pieces and was introduced intramuscularly into the right quadriceps muscle (group A, n = 10), the right rectus abdominalis muscle (group B, n = 10), and the right sacrodorsalis muscle (group C, n = 10). Another group of 8 rabbits underwent total thyroidectomy without autologous implantation and served as the control group (group D). …

Enophthalmos and diplopia are two major complications that result from a downward displacement of the eyeball. A case in which a fascia lata autograft was used to prevent these complications is presented. When covered by a flap with rich blood supply, this autograft can be used as a good substitute for alloplastic materials.

The study evaluated the results of the tricuspid valve autograft technique, consisting of transferring the posterior tricuspid leaflet and subvalvular apparatus towards the mitral valve to reconstruct a destroyed commissure. Twenty patients entered the study. Etiology was degenerative in 12 patients (mean age, 55 +/- 21 years). Nine patients had endocarditis, 8 were rheumatic. Echocardiography results and secondary events were reviewed. Mean follow-up was 44 +/- 17 months. One patient died from sepsis. Survivors were in sinus rhythm. Predischarge echocardiography showed trivial or no mitral re

In head and neck oncology, cancer of the hypopharynx and esophagus still proves difficult to interpret because all treatments give poor results. In order to improve the quality of life for these patients as quickly as possible, one-step reconstructive methods such as the gastric pull-up and free autografts of revascularized intestinal segments are increasingly being used. This work presents a method for a free autograft of the ileocolic segment. After cervical pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy, this method provides a continent aerodigestive carrefour, protected by the ileocolic valve. Three patient…

With the advent of advanced laparoscopic techniques in surgery, new applications have been found, which have expanded the role of laparoscopy in the gynecological field. The aim of this paper is to introduce our laparoscopic technique of taking a sigmoid colon autograft for colpopoiesis in a patient with congenital agenesis of the vagina. This technique is less invasive and is easy to perform, and it may be the best choice of operation in respect to the naturalness and the permanency of the vagina that results. The success of this laparoscopic technique of taking a sigmoid autograft for colpop
