Endorsement of Avoidant/Restrictive Eating Motivations Across Restrictive Eating Disorders: A Trait- and State-Level Examination.

OBJECTIVE: Research on avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and anorexia nervosa (AN) has emphasised differences between these disorders, but similarities maintaining dietary restriction may be overlooked. ARFID-related eating disturbances may also occur and facilitate egosyntonic restriction in AN. METHOD: Using the Nine Item ARFID Screen (NIAS; N = 141) and ecological momentary assessment (N = 76), we examined endorsement of ARFID-related and traditional eating disorder (ED) reasons for restrictive eating in women with ARFID, AN-restrictive subtype (AN-R), AN binge eating/purgi

Nutritional and Psychological Considerations for Dietary Therapy in Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

The step-up empiric elimination diet, starting from one/two food groups of most local allergens remains the current gold standard for a dietary approach in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) patients. Milk, followed by wheat and egg, is the most frequent food that triggers EoE in pediatric and adult patients. Elimination diets, with restrictions over four food groups, may be limited to highly motivated patients, in which nutritional counseling is recommended. Malnourishment is uncommon in EoE patients and likely multifactorial (concomitant gastrointestinal eosinophilic disorders or IgE-mediated fo

Innovative Pharmacological Approaches to Eating Disorder Treatment.

This article explores innovative pharmacologic treatments for eating disorders, focusing on psychedelics, stimulant medications, and other emerging therapies. Preliminary evidence for psychedelics (eg, psilocybin) highlight their potential to enhance cognitive flexibility and support psychological interventions in some eating disorders (eg, anorexia nervosa). Stimulants like lisdexamfetamine offer benefits for binge-eating disorder, while medications for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and bulimia nervosa remain understudied. The study underscores the need for robust clinical trials

Psychological Considerations in the Dietary Management of Patients With DGBI.

In this article, an expert team of 2 gastro-psychologists, a dietician, and an academic gastroenterologist provides insights into the psychological and social implications of evidence-based and "popular" dietary interventions in disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). We focus on practical approaches for evaluating a patient's appropriateness for a dietary intervention, considering the nutritional, psychological, behavioral, and social context in which a patient may find themselves managing their DGBI with dietary intervention. We also discuss how to identify risk factors for and symptoms o

A Useful and Timely Proposal to Amend Diagnostic Criteria for ARFID: Commentary on Zickgraf et al. (2025).

Diagnostic criteria for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) were introduced in DSM-5 in 2013. In the ensuing years, substantial research has clarified the clinical characteristics, complications, and possible treatments for individuals with ARFID. On the basis of this emerging knowledge, in the current issue of the International Journal of Eating Disorders, Zickgraf et al. usefully propose a revision of the diagnostic criteria. The proposed revisions would bring the structure of the criteria more in line with the criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating di

Assessment and treatment of eating disorders in children and adolescents.

Feeding and eating disorders (FEDs) are serious mental health disorders that cause impairments in physical health, development, cognition and psychosocial function and can go undetected for months or years. They are characterised by disturbed eating behaviour associated with concerns about weight and shape or by disinterest in food, phobic avoidance or avoidance due to sensory aspects of food. Restrictive forms of FEDs lead to significant weight loss requiring intervention. Without specific knowledge of these conditions, they can evade detection, delaying time to diagnosis and treatment and po

Attitudes of Young Tri-City Residents toward Game Meat in the Context of Food Neophobia and a Tendency to Look for Diversity in Food.

To conduct rational hunting management, a certain number of wild animals must be harvested yearly. However, some countries have a problem with managing the harvested meat. An example is Poland, where game consumption is estimated at 0.08 kg/person/year. This situation leads to environmental pollution as a result of meat exports. The level of environmental pollution depends on the type of transport and distance. However, the use of meat in the country of harvesting would generate less pollution than its export. Three constructs were used in the study, which aimed to determine whether the respon

Current approach to eating disorders: a clinical update.

This article presents current diagnostic conceptualisations of eating disorders, including new disorders such as binge eating disorder (BED) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). This is followed by contemporary findings in the epidemiology of eating disorders, their broad sociodemographic distribution and the increases in community prevalence. Advances and the current status of evidence-based treatment and outcomes for the main eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and BED are discussed with focus on first-line psychological therapies. Early-onset restrictive food intake disorders in children: a latent class analysis.

The two most frequent early-onset restrictive food intake disorders are early-onset anorexia nervosa (EOAN) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorders (ARFID). Although the core symptoms of EOAN (i.e., fear of gaining weight and disturbed body image) are not present in ARFID, these symptoms are difficult to assess during the initial phase of hospitalisation. Our aim was  to identify restrictive food intake disorder subtypes in children using latent class analysis (LCA) based on the information available at admission to hospital, and to determine the agreement between the subtypes identifie

Staff feeding practices, food neophobia, and educational level in early education and care settings: A cross-sectional study.

Feeding practices in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings are important for the development of healthy eating habits early in life. However, there is limited research on feeding practices among ECEC staff working with infants and toddlers, and how these practices relate to staff education. This study assessed the feeding practices, level of food neophobia, and participation in shared meals among ECEC staff, and examined whether there were differences in feeding practices related to education and shared meals. Furthermore, we explored the association between food neophobia levels

An adolescent case of ASXL3-related disorder with delayed onset of feeding difficulty.

BACKGROUND: ASXL3-related disorder, first described in 2013, is a genetic disorder with an autosomal dominant inheritance that is caused by a heterozygous loss-of-function variant in ASXL3. The most characteristic feature is neurodevelopmental delay with consistently limited speech. Feeding difficulty is a main symptom observed in infancy. However, no adolescent case has been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old girl with ASXL3-related syndrome was referred to our hospital with subacute onset of emotional lability. Limbic encephalitis was ruled out by examination; however, the patient g

Alteration of taste perception, food neophobia and oral microbiota composition in children with food allergy.

Currently, the mechanisms underlying sensory perception and sensory performance in children with food allergies are far from being understood. As well, only recently, single research afforded the oral host-commensal milieu, addressing oral microbial communities in children with peanut allergies. To bridge the current gaps in knowledge both in the sensory and microbial fields, a psychophysiological case-control study was performed in allergic children (n = 29) and a healthy sex-age-matched control group (n = 30). Taste perception, food neophobia, and liking were compared in allergic and non-all

Pitfalls and Risks of "New Eating Disorders": Let the Expert Speak!

Since the post-pandemic period, there has been an increase in the incidence of eating disorders (EADs) and a lowering of the age of onset. In addition to the 'classic' forms, there has also been an increase in new forms of EADs. This article proposes a brief review of the literature concerning mainly two of these new disorders: atypical anorexia and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. In addition, a brief overview is proposed of the most frequently raised questions that clinicians may face when dealing with EADs. The answers are provided by doctors from the Federico II University of Nap
