Definitive radiation therapy in patients with unresectable desmoid tumors: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Desmoid tumors are rare soft tissue tumors. Wide local excision has been the standard surgical treatment for desmoid tumors. However, this procedure results in high local recurrence rates, so non-surgical treatments should be considered. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effect of radiation therapy on patients with desmoid tumors, especially those with unresectable disease. METHODS: We evaluated studies published between 1 January 1990 and 31 August 2017 and cited in PubMed and Ichushi (in Japanese). All studies evaluating the effect of radiation therapy on des

Highly Sensitive Detection of Ionizing Radiations by a Photoluminescent Uranyl Organic Framework.

Precise detection of low-dose X- and γ-radiations remains a challenge and is particularly important for studying biological effects under low-dose ionizing radiation, safety control in medical radiation treatment, survey of environmental radiation background, and monitoring cosmic radiations. We report here a photoluminescent uranium organic framework, whose photoluminescence intensity can be accurately correlated with the exposure dose of X- or γ-radiations. This allows for precise and instant detection of ionizing radiations down to the level of 10-4  Gy, representing a significant improveme

Associations between fear of medical imaging radiation, risk perception, and patient decisional conflict: evidence from variable-centered and person-centered analyses.

BACKGROUND: Medical imaging examinations play an irreplaceable role in modern medical diagnosis; however, some patients experience decisional difficulties due to fear of radiation, potentially leading to examination delays or refusals that subsequently compromise timely disease diagnosis and treatment. The psychological mechanisms through which fear of medical imaging radiation influences patient decision-making processes remain unclear, and the heterogeneous characteristics of radiation fear manifestations across patient populations lack systematic investigation. METHODS: A cross-sectional s

Awareness of Medical Doctors in Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia on Diagnostic Radiological Examination Related Radiation Exposure in the Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: When exposed to equal radiation doses, the risks for children and adolescents are more significant than for adults. Children grow quickly, and their cells are more sensitive to radiation. After radiation exposure, children have a higher risk of developing malignancies such as leukemia, thyroid abnormalities, and various types of cancers. The healthcare professionals' (in this context referring to medical doctors at all levels) awareness of imaging modalities associated with ionizing radiation is essential to ensure optimal patient management of cooperation in dealing with radiation

Hirudin ameliorates intestinal radiation toxicity in the rat: support for thrombin inhibition as strategy to minimize side-effects after radiation therapy and as countermeasure against radiation exposure.

BACKGROUND: The small bowel is a dose-limiting normal tissue in radiation therapy of malignancies in the abdomen and pelvis, as well as an important determinant of survival after non-therapeutic radiation exposure. Irradiation of normal tissues, including intestine, causes loss of vascular thromboresistance and upregulation of thrombin receptors. Radiation-induced endothelial dysfunction is thought to be involved in both early and delayed radiation responses. Hence, thrombin may be a potential target for ameliorating normal tissue radiation toxicity. OBJECTIVE: To assess direct thrombin inhib

Progression of toxic epidermal necrolysis after tanning bed exposure.

BACKGROUND: In addition to recreational tanning bed use, UV radiation exposures are sometimes sought to self-treat skin conditions. The ability of tanning bed radiation exposure to trigger toxic epidermal necrolysis has not been reported. OBSERVATIONS: A young woman attempted to treat a self-limiting drug hypersensitivity reaction via tanning bed radiation exposure, which resulted in a systemic toxic epidermal necrolysis-like reaction. Studies with cultured keratinocytes and an epithelial cell line reveal that UV-A radiation can synergize with other stimuli such as phorbol esters or interleuk

Thoracic spinal cord myelopathy from complex arachnoid web formation/exacerbation after palliative radiation therapy for spinal metastasis: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy is a common treatment for spinal metastases. However, its effects on extramedullary intrathecal structures are poorly understood. Arachnoid webs are rare structural abnormalities that can cause significant neurological symptoms due to spinal cord compression. While radiation-induced myelopathy is a rare known complication of radiation therapy, the potential relationship between radiation treatment and the formation or exacerbation of arachnoid webs has not been previously reported. OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the case of a 64-year-old female with breast can

ACE inhibition attenuates radiation-induced cardiopulmonary damage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In thoracic irradiation, the maximum radiation dose is restricted by the risk of radiation-induced cardiopulmonary damage and dysfunction limiting tumor control. We showed that radiation-induced sub-clinical cardiac damage and lung damage in rats mutually interact and that combined irradiation intensifies cardiopulmonary toxicity. Unfortunately, current clinical practice does not include preventative measures to attenuate radiation-induced lung or cardiac toxicity. Here, we investigate the effects of the ACE inhibitor captopril on radiation-induced cardiopulmonary damag

Rho kinase signalling mediates radiation-induced inflammation and intestinal barrier dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is important in the management of pelvic malignancies, but radiation-induced intestinal damage is a dose-limiting factor. Microvascular injury and epithelial barrier dysfunction are considered to be rate-limiting aspects in radiation-induced enteropathy. This study investigated the role of Rho kinase signalling in radiation-induced inflammation and intestinal barrier dysfunction. METHODS: The specific Rho kinase inhibitor Y-27632 (1 and 10 mg/kg) was given to C57BL/6J mice before challenge with 20 Gy radiation. Leucocyte- and platelet-endothelium interactions in the c

Impact of Radiation-Attenuating Drape on Exposure in a Contemporary Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory: The ATTENUATE Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite recent improvements in radiation safety, interventionalists are increasingly exposed to radiation during cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) procedures. The RADPAD was designed as a protective scatter-radiation absorbing shield with early studies demonstrating a 20% to 62% reduction in scatter-radiation. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of the protective scatter-radiation absorbing shield in a large contemporary randomized controlled trial across multiple CCL procedures. METHODS: The investigator-initiated, prospective, randomized, controlled ATTE

Evaluation of DNA damage in a population of bats (Chiroptera) residing in an abandoned monazite mine.

Ionising radiation has the ability to induce DNA damage. While the effects of high doses of radiation of short duration have been well documented, the biological effects of long-term exposure to low doses are poorly understood. This study evaluated the clastogenic effects of low dose ionising radiation on a population of bats (Chiroptera) residing in an abandoned monazite mine. Bats were sampled from two chambers in the mine, where external radiation levels measured around 20 microSv/h (low dose) and 100 microSv/h (higher dose), respectively. A control group of bats was sampled from a cave wit

Assessing alimentary tract radiation in liver cancer treatment with proton beam therapy: a PET/CT imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Proton beams deposit energy along their path, abruptly stopping and generating various radioactive particles, including positrons, along their trajectory. In comparison with traditional proton beam therapy, scanning proton beam therapy is effective in delivering proton beams to irregularly shaped tumors, reducing excessive radiation exposure to the alimentary tract during the treatment of liver cancer. METHODS: In this study, we utilized positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging to assess the total amount of radiation to the alimentary tract during liver ca

Characterizing long-term trends and spatiotemporal dynamics of ambient gamma radiation dose rates alongside exploratory meteorological factors.

Ambient gamma radiation constitutes an important component of environmental background radiation and is crucial for evaluating public exposure. In China, a nationwide survey conducted between 1983 and 1990 established the baseline for ambient gamma air-absorbed dose rates, with a nationwide range of 2.4-340.8 nGy/h. However, long-term spatiotemporal variations remain poorly documented due to limited publicly available monitoring data. Here, we analyzed ten years of national automatic radiation monitoring data to identify spatial and temporal patterns across China, including areas around operat…

Imaging performance prediction of a hypersonic target in a geosynchronous orbit based on multi-dimensional information correlation of radiation, multi-spectral, and polarization.

Hypersonic target detection based on infrared intensity characteristics is easily disturbed by sea surface and cloud flares when detected by space-based optical systems, which results in a low detection rate, high false alarm, and difficulty in stable detection. This paper explores a method to improve target detection performance based on the correlation of infrared radiation, multi-spectral and polarization. Firstly, the comprehensive factors that influence complex ambient illumination, atmospheric transmission, and clutter background on spectral-polarization characteristics of hypersonic tar
