The chest radiographs of 26 newborns treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for intractable respiratory failure were reviewed. The typical radiographic appearance of the lungs in these patients is that of diffuse pulmonary opacification with variable volume loss. Air bronchograms and patchy basilar atelectasis are also common findings. Generally, decreasing ECMO requirements were reflected in improving chest radiographs with radiographic improvement lagging behind clinical improvement. This study investigates, for the first time, using finite element analysis (FEA), the differential impact of middle ear prosthesis diameter on hearing gain in two distinct surgical techniques: stapedotomy and partial stapedectomy. Whole-cell and cell-free inside-out patch-clamp recording techniques were used to examine the actions of potassium channel openers pinacidil and cromakalim in enzymatically isolated smooth muscle cells of rat basilar artery. Preliminary results presented here indicate a simultaneous decrease in endocochlear potential (EP) and in endolymphatic potassium ion concentration (K+e) under noise exposure. Maximum changes were observed after 20 min and 30 min of sound stimulation, respectively for EP and Ke+. EP recovery was faster than that of K+e. Noise-induced K+e alterations varied with the pure-tone frequency, and the locus along the basilar membrane where the measurements were performed.
