Happily Ever After? Life Satisfaction After Childhood Exposure to Violence.

A plethora of research has linked exposure to violence during childhood to negative long-term physical health, mental health, and risk behavior outcomes. Yet, despite estimates that up to 60% of children in the United States will be exposed to violence, little is known about the impact on adult life satisfaction among different racial and ethnic groups, or for different types of violence exposure. This article seeks to explore factors that are associated with life satisfaction in adults who were exposed to family violence or physically abused as a child, while adjusting race, ethnicity, gender

Increases in HIV testing among men who have sex with men--National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System, 20 U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Areas, 2008 and 2011.

In 2011, 62% of estimated new HIV diagnoses in the United States were attributed to male-to-male sexual contact (men who have sex with men, MSM); 39% of these MSM were black or African American. HIV testing, recommended at least annually by CDC for sexually active MSM, is an essential first step in HIV care and treatment for HIV-positive individuals. A variety of HIV testing initiatives, designed to reach populations disproportionately affected by HIV, have been developed at both national and local levels. We assessed changes in HIV testing behavior among MSM participating in the National HIV

Psychological health and academic success in rural Appalachian adolescents exposed to physical and sexual interpersonal violence.

Interpersonal violence (IPV) in adolescence is a serious public health concern and may have lasting behavioral effects and implications for adult relationships. Adolescents from 2 rural Appalachian high schools in 2011/2012 were surveyed using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance (YRBS) survey, which assessed (a) physical IPV within a dating relationship, (b) sexual IPV (defined as forced sex/rape), and (c) those who experienced both. We present baseline rates of each form of IPV for these rural male and female adolescents and assessed the strength

Independent and joint associations of sleep duration and physical activity with cardiovascular disease: a cross-sectional study of 1.6 million US adults.

BACKGROUND: Sleep duration and physical activity are intertwined determinants of cardiovascular health, yet their joint impact remains unclear. This study evaluated their independent, joint, and interactive associations with cardiovascular disease using a rigorous confounding adjustment framework. METHODS: We analyzed pooled data from 1,577,591 US adults in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (2014-2022). Inverse probability of treatment weighting and doubly robust logistic regression were used. Additive interaction was assessed via RERI. RESULTS: Both short sleep (odds ratio, 1.2

Sunburn prevalence among adults in the United States, 1999.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high levels of sunlight, such as a sunburn, is a strong determinant of melanoma risk. METHODS: To describe statewide and U.S. estimates of sunburn prevalence in the United States and determine demographic and behavioral predictors of sunburn, we analyzed data from the 1999 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a population-based telephone survey conducted in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. RESULTS: Of 156,354 adults aged > or =18 years, 31.7% (95% confidence interval, 31.3%-32.1%) reported a sunburn in the past year; of adults aged 18 t

Sodium Intake Among U.S. Adults - 26 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, 2013.

Excess sodium intake is a major risk factor for hypertension, and subsequently, heart disease and stroke, the first and fifth leading causes of U.S. deaths, respectively. During 2011-2012, the average daily sodium intake among U.S. adults was estimated to be 3,592 mg, above the Healthy People 2020 target of 2,300 mg. To support strategies to reduce dietary sodium intake, 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from states and territories that implemented the new sodium-related behavior module were assessed. Across 26 states, the District of Columbia (DC), and Puerto Rico,

Overview and Methodology of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women - Seven Urban Areas, United States, 2019-2020.

Transgender women, especially transgender women of color, are disproportionately affected by HIV. However, no surveillance system collects data on HIV risk factors among this population. To address this gap, CDC developed a surveillance system entitled National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women (NHBS-Trans) to assess behavioral and contextual data through systematic biobehavioral surveillance to monitor behavioral risk factors, prevention usage, and HIV prevalence among transgender women. NHBS-Trans used respondent-driven sampling in seven urban areas in the United States. Tr

Multiple sexual-partner behavior among sexually active US adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship of multiple sexual-partners to other risk behaviors among adolescent girls. METHODS: Ninth- through 12th-grade sexually active girls (N=3288) who completed the 1999 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey were participants. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine all significant independent relationships. RESULTS: Having one recent sexual-partner was associated with lack of condom use and being in 12th grade whereas having 2 or more partners was associated with fighting, cigarette use, binge drinking, and African American ethnicity. CONCLUSION

Birth-Intention Time Horizon as a Predictor of Contraceptive Method Effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Both contraceptive method research and contraceptive program designs have given more attention to if a woman currently wants to have a child than to when she wants a child. We examine how predictive is a woman's intended duration to a (next) birth for her type of contraceptive method currently used, ranked by the method's effectiveness. We hypothesize that a longer intended duration will be associated with choosing a more effective method. METHODS: We pooled observations of women (n = 7,324 in total) across the two population-representative surveys in Delaware and Maryland: the Be

The effect of chronic disease family history on healthcare provider practice and patient behavior among Oregonians.

Family history is an independent risk factor for many chronic conditions. Therefore, efforts to prevent these diseases among asymptomatic people at high familial risk are justified to reduce the health burden of these chronic conditions. We analyzed 2006-2009 Oregon Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data to examine associations between family history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), colorectal cancer (CRC), breast cancer (BC), and: (1) patient-reported clinician recommendations, (2) adoption of preventive and screening behaviors, and (3) chronic disease risk factors among re

Smoking: high hazards in high school.

BACKGROUND: Young people in school are at an impressionable age, peer pressures are intense, and the probability that they will pick up a high-risk behavior, such as smoking, is high. The key to reduction of smoking among adults is to target our prevention efforts at young adults and teens. OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and trend of smoking among young adults and teens and to formulate guidelines on smoking reduction to guide those who counsel young people. STUDY DESIGN: The study design is cross sectional. METHODS: This study is based on the data from the Oklahoma Behavioral Risk Fact

An Innovative Approach to Assess Similarity Between Sex Partners.

We present a simple, comprehensive method for assessing similarity between sex partners of a participant and demonstrate its application using data collected in 2015 as part of CDC's National HIV behavioral surveillance (NHBS) among persons who inject drugs (PWID). We found that the pairwise similarity between sex partners of a survey participant was high. The similarity between second-to-last and third-to-last partners in the past 3 months was significantly higher than that between last and second-to-last partner in partner type, frequency of sex acts, and the contextual characteristics of se

Subjective Cognitive Decline Among Adults Aged ≥45 Years-United States, 2023.

In 2025, an estimated 7.2 million Americans aged ≥65 years had Alzheimer's disease. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is an early indicator of possible future dementia. Using 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, this study described the SCD prevalence among US adults aged ≥45 years. Estimates were examined by selected characteristics, state, and SCD-related features, including worry, functional limitations, and discussions about SCD with a health care provider. Overall, SCD prevalence was 16.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 16.5-17.3). Among those reporting SCD, 59.3% (95%

Vaping and smoking as risk factors for arthritis: Evidence from double machine learning.

Smoking is a well-documented risk factor for chronic diseases, including arthritis. Vaping, often marketed as a safer alternative, has risen sharply, yet its implications for musculoskeletal health remain unclear. We examine the associations of vaping and smoking with arthritis using Double Machine Learning (DML), and present illustrative economic scenarios projecting the potential cost implications of arthritis cases associated with these behaviors. Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), collected in the United

Alcohol Consumption During Pregnancy Among Women Aged 18-49 Years - United States, 2021-2024.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause adverse birth outcomes and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. One U.S. study identified a slight increasing trend in alcohol consumption during pregnancy from 2011 to 2018. During 2018-2020, 13.5% of pregnant women reported current drinking; more recent estimates are unavailable. CDC analyzed 2021-2024 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data to estimate prevalence of self-reported current drinking (one or more alcoholic drinks during the past 30 days), binge drinking (four or more alcoholic drinks on at least one occasion during the past 30
