Integrating scanned literature and online sources to build a data text collection for plant biodiversity.

Although well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma (WDTC) is characterized by a robust treatment response, aggressive subtypes, such as anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), remain highly lethal. To understand thyroid cancer evolution in both children and adults, we analyzed single-cell transcriptomes of 423,733 cells from 81 samples and spatially resolved key tumor and microenvironment populations across 28 tumors with spatial transcriptomics, including rare and unique composite WDTC/ATC tumors and pediatric diffuse sclerosing thyroid carcinomas. Additionally, we identified gene signatures of strom

Impact of Grape Harvest Time on Wild Yeast Biodiversity and Its Influence on Wine Fermentation.

Grape harvest time influences the berry composition, which impacts the organoleptic wine characteristics. Winemakers monitor technological, phenolic, and aromatic grape maturity to decide the harvest date. Little is known about the evolution of yeast ecology of grapes during the maturation period. The microbiota involved in the fermentation impacts the wine composition and characteristics; therefore, changes in grape biodiversity could have an impact in fermentation kinetics and aroma compound formation. In this study, the yeast biodiversity of Grenache Noir and Carignan grapes from Montsant D…

Tracking of Leishmania spp. in Iranian phlebotominae, distribution and biodiversity in Jarqavieh county, central Iran.

Female phlebotomine sand flies are vectors of the protozoan parasites Leishmania spp. In Iran, Leishmania major and L. tropica are the causative agents of cutaneous Leishmaniasis. This epidemiological and descriptive cross-sectional study took place in 2021 to determine how sand flies are distributed in Hasanabad and Hossein-Abad, located in eastern Isfahan province, central Iran. Sand flies were screened for Leishmania DNA by semi-nested PCR and sequencing to discriminate between species. Overall, 363 collected sand flies were identified morphologically, among which 161 (44.4%) and 202 (55.6%

Pleistocene glaciation advances the cryptic speciation of Stellera chamaejasme L. in a major biodiversity hotspot.

The mountains of Southwest China comprise a significant large mountain range and biodiversity hotspot imperiled by global climate change. The high species diversity in this mountain system has long been attributed to a complex set of factors, and recent large-scale macroevolutionary investigations have placed a broad timeline on plant diversification that stretches from 10 million years ago (Mya) to the present. Despite our increasing understanding of the temporal mode of speciation, finer-scale population-level investigations are lacking to better refine these temporal trends and illuminate t…

Non-Native Turtles (Chelydridae) in Freshwater Ecosystems in Italy: A Threat to Biodiversity and Human Health?

Marketed globally, freshwater turtles are popular pets. Two species of the Chelydridae family are increasingly reported in Italy: the snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) and the alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii). Both pose potential threats to public safety and habitat biodiversity. This update reports on their distribution and impact on biodiversity and human health. The recent increase in the number of C. serpentina in urban and rural areas suggests illegal importation into the country. Findings are reported for the north (35% and 100% for C. serpentina and M. temminckii, …

Poisonous Piperidine Plants and the Biodiversity of Norditerpenoid Alkaloids for Leads in Drug Discovery: Experimental Aspects.

There are famous examples of simple (e.g., hemlock, Conium maculatum L.) and complex (e.g., opium poppy, Papaver somniferum L., Papaveraceae) piperidine-alkaloid-containing plants. Many of these are highly poisonous, whilst pepper is well-known gastronomically, and several substituted piperidine alkaloids are therapeutically beneficial as a function of dose and mode of action. This review covers the taxonomy of the genera Aconitum, Delphinium, and the controversial Consolida. As part of studying the biodiversity of norditerpenoid alkaloids (NDAS), the majority of which possess an N-ethyl group…

Biodiversity of Potential Vectors of Rickettsiae and Epidemiological Mosaic of Spotted Fever in the State of Paraná, Brazil.

Spotted Fever Rickettsioses (SFR) are diseases caused by bacteria of the genus Rickettsia, and are transmitted mainly by ticks. Its eco-epidemiological scenarios vary spatially, and may also vary over time due to environmental changes. It is the main disease transmitted by ticks to humans in Brazil, with the state of Paraná (PR) having the sixth highest number of notified incidences in the country. However, information is lacking regarding the SFR disease cycles at likely infection sites within PR. During case investigations or environmental surveillance in PR for SFR, 28,517 arthropods were c

Molecular Characterization and Biodiversity of a Putative Chlorotoxin from the Iranian Yellow Scorpion Odontobuthus doriae.

BACKGROUND: Chloride channels have already been over-expressed in the different types of cancer. Chlorotoxins, as the blocking agent of these channels, have been indicated to be an effective drug against tumors. In this study, we characterized a putative chlorotoxin from a cDNA library of the venom glands obtained from the Iranian scorpion Odontobuthus doriae. METHODS: A cDNA library was constructed from venom gland transcriptome of six scorpions. The cDNA encoding Odontobuthus doriae chlorotoxin was isolated from the library, and its putative peptide was characterized by some bioinformatics

Amazonian Triatomine Biodiversity and the Transmission of Chagas Disease in French Guiana: In Medio Stat Sanitas.

The effects of biodiversity on the transmission of infectious diseases now stand as a cornerstone of many public health policies. The upper Amazonia and Guyana shield are hot-spots of biodiversity that offer genuine opportunities to explore the relationship between the risk of transmission of Chagas disease and the diversity of its triatomine vectors. Over 730 triatomines were light-trapped in four geomorphological landscapes shaping French-Guiana, and we determined their taxonomic status and infection by Trypanosoma cruzi. We used a model selection approach to unravel the spatial and temporal…

Community ecology theory predicts the effects of agrochemical mixtures on aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem properties.

Ecosystems are often exposed to mixtures of chemical contaminants, but the scientific community lacks a theoretical framework to predict the effects of mixtures on biodiversity and ecosystem properties. We conducted a freshwater mesocosm experiment to examine the effects of pairwise agrochemical mixtures [fertiliser, herbicide (atrazine), insecticide (malathion) and fungicide (chlorothalonil)] on 24 species- and seven ecosystem-level responses. As postulated, the responses of biodiversity and ecosystem properties to agrochemicals alone and in mixtures was predictable by integrating information…

A meta-analysis suggesting that the relationship between biodiversity and risk of zoonotic pathogen transmission is idiosyncratic.

Zoonotic pathogens are significant burdens on global public health. Because they are transmitted to humans from non-human animals, the transmission dynamics of zoonoses are necessarily influenced by the ecology of their animal hosts and vectors. The 'dilution effect' proposes that increased species diversity reduces disease risk, suggesting that conservation and public health initiatives can work synergistically to improve human health and wildlife biodiversity. However, the meta-analysis that we present here indicates a weak and highly heterogeneous relationship between host biodiversity and …

Soil fertility context shapes biodiversity-carbon associations across forest strata in a subtropical karst landscape.

Forests in karst landscapes occur across strong edaphic gradients that may alter biodiversity-carbon relationships, yet these relationships are commonly evaluated using tree aboveground biomass carbon, potentially obscuring contrasting responses among forest strata and biomass compartments. We examined how soil fertility context modifies multidimensional biodiversity-carbon associations across aboveground and allometrically estimated belowground compartments in a subtropical karst forest landscape of China. Fifty-four plots were classified as low-fertility (LF) or high-fertility (HF) based on …

Biodiversity and five novel species of myxozoan parasites in Barbonymus spp. (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) from Malaysia.

Up to this time, only five myxosporean species have been documented from fishes of the Barbonymus genus. Due to a limited number of myxozoan studies conducted in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, the diversity of this parasite group remains largely undiscovered. In this study, a comprehensive parasitology survey was conducted, revealing nine myxozoan parasites, including five different Myxobolus spp., three Thelohanellus sp. and one Myxidium sp. Using morphological and molecular data, we describe here five new species: Myxobolus gonionoti n. sp., found in the gill filaments; Myxobolus

Exploring technical improvements for environmental nucleic acids-based biodiversity assessment and management in coastal ecosystems.

Assessing and conserving marine biodiversity remain critical global challenges, particularly in highly disturbed coastal regions. The use of environmental DNA (eDNA)-metabarcoding has revolutionized biodiversity assessment and management; however, the prevalence of both false positives and negatives continues to be a significant concern. To address these technical errors, we tested two potential methodological improvements in the highly disturbed Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area: (1) the use of random whole-genome amplification (WGA) to reduce false negatives derived from low eDNA co…

Anisakid biodiversity in two young harbour seals (Phoca vitulina L.) from coastal South-West Norway.

Anisakid nematodes are widespread marine parasites with complex life cycles involving invertebrates and fish as intermediate or transport hosts, and marine mammals as definitive hosts. Despite their ecological importance, and the zoonotic potential associated with the larval stages found in fish, recent data on anisakid species diversity in pinnipeds from Norwegian waters remain scarce. In this study, we investigated anisakid infections in two juvenile harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) stranded along the southern coast of Norway. Gastrointestinal nematodes were collected, morphologically classifi

Five times over: 42 new Angustopila species highlight Southeast Asia's rich biodiversity (Gastropoda, Stylommatophora, Hypselostomatidae).

The Southeast Asian genus Angustopila, currently comprising 13 nominal species, encompasses the world's tiniest land snails. This work shows that there are far more species than previously suspected, and that this genus is in fact, a very speciose group of tiny snails widely distributed in Southeast Asia. Angustopila is revised based on type material of known species as well as 211 samples newly collected in China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Altogether, 53 species and one subspecies are recognised, of which 42 species and subspecies are new to science: A.akrodon Páll-Gergely & Hunyad
