Between personal and relational privacy: understanding the work of informed consent in cancer genetics in Brazil.

Drawing from perspectives of both bioethics and anthropology, this article explores how the boundaries between personal and relational privacy are negotiated by patients and practitioners in the context of an emerging domain of cancer genetics in Brazil. It reflects on the place of informed consent in the history of bioethics in North America in contrast to the development of bioethics in Brazil and the particular social cultural context in which consent is sought in Brazilian public health care. Making use of empirical research with families and individuals receiving genetic counselling relat…

The ethical imperative to pursue neonatal health equity and justice.

There are significant racial and ethnic inequities in neonatal care. These inequities are the result of the multiple levels of racism: structural, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized racism. Recently, there has been significantly increased attention to measuring and addressing inequities for minoritized infants and their families. One way to support these strategies is to clarify the bioethical justification for allocating clinical, research and educational resources to address inequity. In this narrative review, we describe two bioethical frameworks-the four pillars and the ethics

Comparative analysis of Mouse Inoculation Test and Virus Isolation in Cell Culture for rabies diagnosis in animals of Parana, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is an acute zoonotic disease, caused by a rhabdovirus that can affect all mammals, and is commonly transmitted by the bite of a rabid animal. The definitive diagnosis is laboratorial, by the Fluorescent Antibody Test (FAT) as a quick test and Mouse Inoculation Test (MIT) as a confirmatory test (gold standard). Studies conducted over the past three decades indicate that MIT and Virus Isolation in Cell Culture (VICC) can provide the same effectiveness, the latter being considered superior in bioethics and animal welfare. The aim of this study was to compare VICC with MIT, in…

[Not Available].

The use of the category of vulnerability has been multiplied in moral philosophy social sciences and bioethics. Being vulnerable can refer rhetorically to all mortal agents, but also to those lacking agency which makes of it a very ambiguous notion. The notion of vulnerability is part of everyday language and is mostly perceived as a determination which limits our aspirations to autonomy. Why has it become a notion a bioethical principle or concept per se? Historically, anthropology of the vulnerable subject is needed and can be found in the work of Nussbaum and Honneth which could be used in …

In praise of unprincipled ethics.

In this paper a plea is made for an unprincipled approach to biomedical ethics, unprincipled of course just in the sense that the four principles are neither the start nor the end of the process of ethical reflection. While the four principles constitute a useful "checklist" approach to bioethics for those new to the field, and possibly for ethics committees without substantial ethical expertise approaching new problems, it is an approach which if followed by the bioethics community as a whole would, the author believes, lead to sterility and uniformity of approach of a quite mindbogglingly bo…

Thinking Ahead on Deep Brain Stimulation: An Analysis of the Ethical Implications of a Developing Technology.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a developing technology. New generations of DBS technology are already in the pipeline, yet this particular fact has been largely ignored among ethicists interested in DBS. Focusing only on ethical concerns raised by the current DBS technology is, albeit necessary, not sufficient. Since current bioethical concerns raised by a specific technology could be quite different from the concerns it will raise a couple of years ahead, an ethical analysis should be sensitive to such alterations, or it could end up with results that soon become dated. The goal of this anal

The Groningen Protocol - the Jewish perspective.

Despite significant advances in neonatology, there will always be newborns with serious life-threatening conditions creating most difficult bioethical dilemmas. Active euthanasia for adult patients is one of the most controversial bioethical questions; for severely ill neonates, the issue is even more complex, due to their inability to take part in any decision concerning their future. The Groningen Protocol introduced in 2005 by P.J. Sauer proposes criteria allowing active euthanasia for severely ill, not necessarily terminal, newborns with incurable conditions and poor quality of life in ord

Considerations on genetic engineering: regarding the birth of twins subjected to gene edition.

In this essay, the bioethical implications of the recent genetic manipulation in human embryos with CRISPR-Cas9 to eliminate the CCR5 gene and the birth of a pair of discordant twin girls are analyzed. The experiment was disseminated via social media. The main bioethical flaws identified include the justification of the model, the informed consent process and the lack of disclosure of evident conflicts of interest. The consequences of the experiment on the life of the twins that were born were not properly evaluated, such as the impact on their autonomy, the alleged benefits to be received and

Technical procedure and ethical behaviour in biotechnologies of reproduction.

BACKGROUND: The significant and constant progress of biotechnologies applied to sterility and infertility has induced a deeper reflection about bioethical problems. The analysis of only the biological dimension, about the results achieved and desirable future prospects, decreases, leaving out the anthropological dimension. It is therefore necessary to make reference to both the limits of the basic or applied research and to the usual welfare procedure. The aim, that the article sets itself, is to proceed to the bioethical analysis of the most significant topics of artificial insemination and a

Transplantation and Immortality: A Selective History of Boston University's Center for Health Law, Ethics & Human Rights.

The celebration of the anniversary of the Center for Health Law, Ethics & Human Rights (the "Center") provides an opportunity to reflect on what defines the field of health law, as well as its conjoined twins of bioethics and human rights. The related fields are vast, and the subjects they encompass are ever-expanding. It is probably impossible to lay out a summary that does justice to their expansive, interdisciplinary scope. Instead, my discussion of the Center examines a subject that barely existed when the Center was formed in 19581 and that continues to make headlines more than sixty-six …

Ethics and the care of persons with Bell's palsy.

Much of the bioethics literature focuses on dilemmas physicians face involving life and death issues. We articulate and apply a method of bioethics that can help both in resolving such dilemmas and in the appreciation of many situations and conditions. We apply the method to a case of a person with Bell's palsy because such a condition does not involve life and death, has a low cure rate, involves poorly recognized value conflicts, involves several specialties with rival approaches to care and much uncertainty. We show the strengths of the method in the application, and recommend it as general…

Ethics in the trenches: a multifaceted analysis of the stem cell debate.

The increasing understanding of stem cell biology has opened up the possibility of using cell transplantation to treat a large variety of diseases. The medical need to identify optimal therapies is being challenged, however, by some members of society who seek to impose on this scientific quest their views--generally associated with particular religious beliefs--of what constitutes allowable research. This conflict mirrors earlier battles, extending over 150 years, between those implementing inoculation and vaccination to protect against smallpox and those who felt this to be unethical for rel

Contested futures of AI ethics for global population health.

Ethical debate about artificial intelligence (AI) for health is fundamental to the good governance and long-term success of this group of technologies in healthcare and public health. Building on foundational contributions on this topic from the field of bioethics, we propose that interdisciplinary work on AI ethics should deepen the already strong engagements that exist with Science and Technology Studies (STS) to uphold core commitments of global population health. STS is an interdisciplinary field that specifically explores the meaning, development and governance of science and technology a…

American Muslim Physician Attitudes Toward Organ Donation.

Religious beliefs and values impact Muslim patients' attitudes toward a variety of healthcare decisions, including organ donation. Muslim physician attitudes toward organ donation, however, are less well studied. Utilizing a national survey of physician members of the Islamic Medical Association of North America, relationships between religiosity, patterns of bioethics resource utilization, and sociodemographic characteristics with attitudes toward organ donation were assessed. Of 255 respondents, 251 answered the target question, "in your understanding, does Islamic bioethics and law permit o…

COVID-19 from Wellington New Zealand.

This paper examines the role of bioethics in the successful control of COVID-19 in New Zealand. After the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus episode in Toronto researchers developed a framework of values and principles to articulate values that were already commonly accepted "in the community of its intended users," to be used to inform decision-making. New Zealand subsequently developed its own framework that was embedded in its Pandemic Influenza Plan. These formed the basis of the New Zealand response to COVID-19. This paper illustrates the ways in which the bioethical fra…

Using Ethics Committees to Justify Force-Feeding Political Prisoners in Israel.

Thousands of Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli prisons without trial. For some of them, engaging in hunger strikes is the last resort in opposing unlawful detention and inhumane prison conditions. While mainstream bioethics deliberation, reasonable arguments, and international legal and medical professional declarations prohibit force-feeding, local ethical deliberations, professional medical guidelines, and legislation allow the use of medical judgment and clinical ethics committees to force-feed these prisoners. Until now, Israeli physicians have refused to do so, but this may change…
