Myotherapy intervention in facial aesthetics aims to attenuate wrinkles and signs of facial aging. The relationship between accentuated muscle contraction during chewing, swallowing and speaking and the appearance of facial wrinkles has been suggested by speech-language pathology literature. This study aimed to report the effect of electromyographic biofeedback associated with training of chewing, swallowing, and smiling patterns, during speech therapy intervention aimed at reducing the signs of facial wrinkles and furrows, in a 55-year-old woman. The therapy also included isotonic and isometr

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Defecation Disorders (DD) are a frequent cause of refractory chronic constipation. DD diagnosis requires anorectal physiology testing. Our aim was to evaluate the accuracy and Odds Ratio (OR) of a straining question (SQ) and a digital rectal examination (DRE) augmented by abdomen palpation on predicting a DD diagnosis in refractory CC patients.
METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-eight constipated patients were enrolled. Patients underwent SQ, augmented DRE and balloon evacuation test before entering the study and after a 30-day fiber/laxative trial. All patients underwent an

About one-third of chronically constipated patients have an evacuation disorder, and dyssynergic defecation is a common cause of the evacuation disorder. In dyssynergic defecation, the coordination between abdominal and pelvic floor muscles during defecation is disrupted and patients cannot produce a normal bowel movement. The etiology of dyssynergic defecation is still unknown. Although a detailed history taking and a careful examination including digital rectal examination could be useful, other modalities such as anorectal manometry and balloon expulsion test are necessary for the diagnosis

Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) often experience anger events before cardiovascular events. Anger is a psychological risk factor and causes underlying psychophysiological mechanisms to lose balance of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The heart rate variability (HRV) was the common index for ANS regulation. It has been confirmed that heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) restored ANS balance in patients with CAD during the resting state. However, the effects of HRV-BF during and after the anger event remain unknown. This study aimed to examine the effects of HRV-BF on ANS r

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is characterized by uneven shoulders, spinal curvature, and uneven hips, and asymmetry in paraspinal muscle activities is common in AIS. This pilot study was aimed at examining the use of a surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback posture training program in adolescents with mild scoliosis (Cobb's angle < 30°) to attenuate asymmetry in paraspinal muscle activities and control the curve progression. Seven female adolescents (age, 12-14 years) with mild scoliosis (Cobb's angle < 30°) were recruited. The participants received 30 tailor-made sessions of sEM

BACKGROUND: It is now known that with appropriate exercises, the functions of the muscles in the body ameliorate and increase in strength. We applied pelvic floor muscle relaxation training and exercises that strengthen the abdominal and pelvic muscles in combination with biofeedback therapy (BFT) to patients with dyssynergic defecation (DD).
METHODS: Patients who met the criteria for DD and had no underlying organic cause were included in this study. The electromyography (EMG) technique was used for BFT therapy. Patients had received at least six sessions of BFT. BFT was considered successfu

INTRODUCTION: Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is considered a multifactorial disease characterized by a persistent increase in blood pressure levels. Currently, the efficient control of blood pressure is achieved by both the use of pharmacological therapy and the control of risk factors. In addition, the use of biofeedback (BFB) as a non-pharmacological strategy represents a promising therapy.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effects of BFB on systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels, as well as on environmental and psychosocial factors in patients with essential SAH.

Speakers of North American English use variable tongue shapes for rhotic sounds. However, quantifying tongue shapes for rhotics can be challenging, and little is known about how tongue shape complexity corresponds to perceptual ratings of rhotic accuracy in children with residual speech sound errors (RSE). In this study, 16 children aged 9-16 with RSE and 14 children with typical speech (TS) development made multiple productions of 'Let Robby cross Church Street'. Midsagittal ultrasound images were collected once for children with TS and twice for children in the RSE group (once after 7 h of s

BACKGROUND: Heartrate variability biofeedback (HRVB) is a non-invasive treatment in which patients are assumed to self-regulate a physiological dysregulated vagal nerve. Although the therapeutic approach of HRVB is promising in various stress-related disorders, it has only been offered on a regular basis in a few mental health treatment settings.
AIM: To analyse the efficacy of HRV biofeedback as an additional psychophysiological treatment for depression and PTSD.
METHOD: Systematic review with search terms HRV, biofeedback, PTSD, depression, panic disorder and anxiety disorder.

Childhood dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary sustained or intermittent muscle contractions causing twisting and repetitive movements, abnormal postures, or both (Sanger et al, 2003). Dystonia is a devastating neurological condition that prevents the acquisition of normal motor skills during critical periods of development in children. Moreover, it is particularly debilitating in children when dystonia affects the upper extremities such that learning and consolidation of common daily motor actions are impeded. Thus, the treatment and rehabilitation of dystonia is a cha

Despite first written references to permanent developmental stuttering occurred more than 2500 years ago, the mechanisms underlying this disorder are still unknown. This paper briefly reviews stuttering causal hypothesis and treatments, and presents the requirements that a new stuttering therapeutic device should verify. As a result of the analysis, an adaptive altered auditory feedback device based on a multimodal intelligent monitor, within the framework of a knowledge-based telehealthcare system, is presented. The subsequent discussion, based partly on the successful outcomes of a similar i

An accurate control of fundamental frequency (F0) is required from singers. This control relies on auditory and kinesthetic feedback. However, a loud accompaniment may mask the auditory feedback, leaving the singers to rely on kinesthetic feedback. The object of the present study was to estimate the significance of auditory and kinesthetic feedback to pitch control in 28 students beginning a professional solo singing education. The singers sang an ascending and descending triad pattern covering their entire pitch range with and without masking noise in legato and staccato and in a slow and a f
