Antimicrobial activities of two edible bivalves M. meretrix and M. casta.

The marine invertebrates become one of hot spot for the lead of antimicrobial compounds. Two species of commercially available and edible bivalves (M. meretrix and M. casta) were assayed for antimicrobial activity against 10 bacterial pathogens and 6 fungal pathogens and its biochemical composition. The bivalves were extracted with three different solvent systems respectively methanol, ethanol and acetic acid. All the three extracts of both the species M. meretrix and M. casta showed highest antibacterial activities against S. aureus, E. coli, B. substillus, K. pneumonia, P. fleuroscence and V

Sperm transfer and reproductive biology in species of hermaphroditic bivalves (Galeommatoidea: Montacutidae).

The histology of the reproductive organs is studied in the protandric hermaphroditic Tellimya ferruginosa. In NW Europe the species reproduces from May through August. Sperm transfer takes place when mature testis follicles are transplanted to the gills or walls of the mantle cavity in recipient hermaphroditic or female bivalves. Transplantation is accompanied by histological changes and sperm cells are released when transplants perish with age. Details are given on the reproduction in Montacuta percompressa which takes place from March through October in North Carolina, USA. All shelled bival

Behavioural response to the bioavailability of inorganic mercury in the hydrothermal mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus.

The hydrothermal vent bivalve Bathymodiolus azoricus is naturally exposed to putatively elevated levels of mercury (Hg), exposure that dates back to the geological occurrence of vent ecosystems, and thus may have evolved evolutionary detoxification mechanisms. Therefore, it was used as a model organism in the present investigation to study the Hg-animal interaction. Mussels were exposed to inorganic Hg by daily administration of 20 microg l(-1) Hg for 21 days (cumulative added concentration was 420 microg l(-1), i.e. approximately 2 mmol l(-1)) under controlled laboratory conditions, and conse

Isolation and primary culture of gill and digestive gland cells from the common mussel Mytilus edulis.

As the marine mussel Mytilus edulis is commonly used as a sentinel species, it would be useful to develop a primary culture of the target organs most often in contact with the marine environment. This study reports an improved method for dissociating the digestive gland and gills of M. edulis and considers the effect of mussel storage on cell viability and functionality before culture initiation. Viability and enzymatic activities such as those of esterase and peroxidase were monitored by flow cytometry, a sensitive, objective technique allowing large volumes of cells to be counted within a sh

Male-associated polypeptide (MAP) expression in different compartments of the reproductive system of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis: immunocytochemical and western blot study.

Mytilus mussels are characterized by annually repeated reproduction which is associated with subsequent growth, morphogenesis, breakdown and redevelopment of the gonad and reproductive tract into mantle mesenchyme. We present a description of the expression of the male-associated polypeptide (MAP; see Mikhailov et al. 1995) in different compartments of the male reproductive system as well as in mantle gonad-supporting tissue. MAP is expressed in both gonad and mantle structures in dynamic patterns that show a substantial overlap in terms of dependence on the stage of gonad development/involuti

High-performance liquid chromatography of carotenoids from some marine shellfish.

The chromatographic profiles of carotenoids from some marine shellfish are reported. The analyses were performed both by gradient elution reversed-phase and isocratic direct phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the results obtained are compared and discussed. The six main carotenoids extracted from three shellfish species (Chlamys opercularis, L., Cardium tuberculatum, L., Pecten jacobaeus, L.) were isolated in highly pure form by means of semi-preparative HPLC. They were characterized by means of spectroscopic methods (visible absorption and infrared spectroscopy), and che

Marine Lectins in Innate Immune Modulation: Mechanistic Insights, Signaling Pathways, and a Cross-Taxa Evidence Landscape.

Marine lectins function as pattern recognition receptors in innate immunity through carbohydrate-binding mechanisms. However, mechanistic evidence detailing intracellular signaling cascades (e.g., MAPK/NF-κB/JAK-STAT activation linked to defined cytokine outputs) remains taxonomically uneven. Bivalve mollusks-particularly the Mytilectin family-represent the most extensively characterized group, whereas lectins from other marine phyla (echinoderms, cnidarians, fish, algae) have been studied primarily for structural and glycan-binding properties alongside phenotypic antimicrobial outcomes. Effects of dichlofluanid in tropical marine bivalves exposed to water and spiked sediments: an assessment of biomarker responses.

Antifouling paints have been used to control biofouling on submerged surfaces for decades. They contain biocidal compounds that may be released into the environment and harm aquatic ecosystems; however, their effects on tropical organisms are little known. Dichlofluanid, or N-dichlorofluoromethythio-N',N'-dimethyl-N-phenylsulfamide (C9H11Cl2FN2O2S2), is a biocide present in antifouling paints and its toxicity to tropical marine organisms is poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dichlofluanid at the cellular and biochemical levels in bivalves exposed to seawater and sed

Protective effect of Glutamicibacter sp. ZY1 against Vibrio parahaemolyticus YDE17 pathogenicity in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum.

The use of probiotics is preferable to the use of antibiotics for the control of vibriosis. In this study, artificial infection showed that Glutamicibacter sp. ZY1 significantly protected the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum from infection by Vibrio parahaemolyticus YDE17, with a relative percent survival of 82.16%. Glutamicibacter sp. ZY1 significantly reduced the total numbers of culturable Vibrio and V. parahaemolyticus in the infected clam R. philippinarum. Histopathological observation revealed that the pathological damage to the gills of individuals infected by V. parahaemolyticus YDE

Exploring Nile Red and machine learning for microplastics detection in Tridacna maxima.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face unique challenges for microplastics (MPs) monitoring due to limited infrastructure and resources. In this context, we propose and test innovative approaches toward a standardized, low-cost methodology for quantifying MPs in SIDS. We evaluate the giant clam T. maxima as a bio-integrator, combining Nile red (NR) fluorescence staining with automated machine-learning detection. We optimized a digestion protocol using KOH and HNO3 for T. maxima viscera, and developed a DAPI-guided multi-spectra composite imaging approach based on triband fluorescence (DAPI

Identification of sex-related genes across bivalves reveals key genes in gonad development and sex reversal.

The complex and diverse sexual reproduction patterns and multiple sex types of mollusks make it important to elucidate their sex mechanisms. Recent studies have demonstrated the crucial roles of Dmrt, STAT, and Sox genes in animal sex determination/differentiation. However, the comprehensive comparison of these genes in different bivalves is limited. In this study, 33 bivalves were analyzed to investigate the sequence characteristics, phylogenetic relationships, and expression profiles of these genes. Total of 112 Dmrt genes, 88 STAT genes and 229 Sox genes were identified in 33 bivalves. Phyl

Extracellular and intracellular digestion in bivalves, studied by magnetic resonance imaging with a contrast reagent.

PURPOSE: Non-anemic iron deficiency (NAID) is common in COPD, and could induce functional/structural changes in the pulmonary vascular bed. Thus, we aimed to study, during resting and ambient oxygen conditions, the systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) changes during dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) for NAID+ compared to NAID- subjects with COPD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 24 patients with COPD and evaluated their clinical parameters, including lung function and serum iron profile, followed by the changes in the sPAP under DSE. RESULTS: Ten subjects with NAID+ were compa

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of the Sox gene family in bivalves.

Since the discovery of the Sox gene family in 1990, research on its distribution, classification, characterization, and function across various species has been significantly deepened. However, the Sox gene family has not yet been systematically and comprehensively analyzed in bivalves. In this study, 254 Sox genes were identified in 51 bivalves (covering 20 orders and 37 families). The Sox gene numbers ranged from 1 and 10 in most bivalves but no Sox gene was identified in the transcriptomes of Poromya illevis (Poromyoidea), Thracia phaseolina (Thracioidea), Solen vaginoides (Solenoidea), Lam

Mussel-inspired robust and waterproof soybean protein adhesives enhanced with phenolated lignosulfonate for wood bonding.

Plant protein-based adhesives are favored for their cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. However, the low reactivity of plant protein and inherent water sensitivity of its adhesive significantly limits their scalability and broader application. Drawing inspiration from mussels, we developed a robust and waterproof bio-based adhesive reinforcing soybean protein (SP) with lignosulfonate. Specifically, the lignosulfonate was modified with phenol and epoxidated to synthesize phenolated lignin epoxy resin (PLEP), which was then added into SP matrix. The resulting adhesive demonstrated

The source-specific health risk and biological effect assessment of PAHs in Mactra veneriformis from the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea.

Source-specific risk assessment has been widely used to analyze the source of pollution risk instead of pollutant content for more accurate control of pollution. However, due to limitations in data type, assessment of source-specific biological effect has not been reported, which is highly significant for organism protection. This study conducted a comprehensive assessment of the health risk and biological effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) bioaccumulated in the clam Mactra veneriformis from two typical bays in China. PAH levels ranged from 122.68 to 367.21 ng/g d.w. (dry weight

Evaluating the impact of gadolinium contamination on the marine bivalve Donax trunculus: Implications for environmental health.

Gadolinium (Gd), commonly used in contrast agents for medical imaging, has been detected in hospital wastewater and aquatic environments, raising environmental concerns. This study examined the accumulation and cellular impacts of Gd in the clam species Donax trunculus, commonly used as bioindicator of contamination. Gadolinium accumulation in clams increased with exposure and over time. Biological responses varied with Gd levels: low concentrations (10 and 50 µg/L) led to low metabolic activity and glycogen content, but high antioxidant activities and lipid peroxidation levels (LPO); high con

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii in wild bivalves from the Kerguelen and Galapagos archipelagos: influence of proximity to cat populations, exposure to marine currents and kelp density.

Oocysts of the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii are found in felid feces and can be washed into coastal waters, where they persist for months, attaching to algae and accumulating in invertebrates. We used wild bivalves to assess contamination of coastal waters of the Kerguelen and Galapagos archipelagos by this zoonotic parasite. Additionally, we leveraged the contrasting situations of these archipelagos to identify some potential drivers of contamination. In the Galapagos, with a cat density reaching 142 per km2, 15.38% of the sampled oysters (Saccostrea palmula) tested positive for T. gondii by q
